Wood stock waxing?

I am ready to wax a new walnut stock, but read that I should not wax the checkered areas. What say you? Thanks...

I wax the checkering on mine. I use a soft toothbrush to get it out of the cracks.

Also, I always take the long gun apart and heavily wax the insides of the stock. Helps to prevent out of sight water from warping the stock.
