getting my son a recurve for christmas; need recommendations for practice arrows at a good price. I was into archery as a ute ;) but it's been a lot of years.

Good 'ol Walmart usually has a selection of aluminum and carbon arrows for as little as a few bucks apiece.
Some of them are pretty shoddy; I've examined some that have the fletching applied incorrectly, for instance.
Still, I made one of those "Backyard Bowyer" PVC recurves last Summer and bought some carbon target arrows that actually worked quite well.

Be sure to check the spine range for whatever bow the lad has.

Wal-mart or your local sporting goods store right about NOW (or really, every year right towards the end of hunting season :)) is a good place to look. They tend to put all the archery stuff on clearance.

I'm not really what you'd call a serious archer (I don't bow hunt and have only shot 1 competition over 10 years go - I mostly just backyard practice), but the arrows there work fine for me.

Usually they'll have some brand or another of carbon arrows for $2.50-3.50 a piece

Give the bow specs and his draw length.He will do a lot better if you can find inexpensive arrows that are correctly spined.

5/16" dowel should be good for 20-40 lb pull, points and feathers from places like Kustom King or Three Rivers Archery. Read the section on making arrows in this very good book:

Not to steal the OP's thunder, but I am in the same boat. In my case, I need a source for feather fletched arrows for a 27#-28" recurve bow. If broad heads are available that would be awesome, but I can't even find field tip arrows locally.

Lancaster Archery will be able to get you close with proper spine.You will have to bareshaft tune to get it perfect.They will do custom fletched arrows.
