Cheap = 55 grain FMJ-BT.

Unfortunately, that is the worst bullet ever made as far as accuracy is concerned.

I would suggest you look at something like the bulk Varmint bullets from Hornady, Nosler, Mid-South, etc.

In short, any bullet with the jacket opening in the nose (SP, HP, BT) is going to be more accurate then one with the jacket opening in the base. (FMJ)

No matter what they cost.

I shoot cheap FMJ for blasting beer cans at 50-100 yards.

I shoot Hornady V-Max or Nosler Ballistic Tips for killing prairie dogs & coyotes at 350 yards.

Heed what rcmodel says.

Many less expensive bullets are available. So, your statement of 'target shooting' must be further examined. Informal targeting doesn't require the same quality of bullets as a long range serious target shooter wants.

For just banging away, pull downs work fine. For better results, new bulk 55 grain FMJs. Moving up the line to more and much more expensive bullets will give better results. This is with the understanding that uniform tailoring for your weapon during reloading is required. For me, this is the enjoyment of shooting. I have had good results with MidwayUSA's Dogtown series. Others find fault with them, so to each their own. I shoot paper, so I get by with them.

Congrats on you new acquisition and may you enjoy it to the fullest.

Dont buy remington 55gr fmj! I bought 300 and they are terribly inconsistent.

55 fmjs, easiest plinkers you can find.

For target shooting cheap, you can't beat Hornady 55gr fmj's purchased in bulk. IME, they shoot much better than Win or LC 62gr pulled. They cost less than half what a match bullet costs, so more trigger time / $. I would shoot at reactive targets like steel; shooting for groups will disappoint. I increase the target size when shooting them. With a match bullet, I may shoot a 4" or 6" target. With the fmj's, I shoot an 8" or 10" target. Inside of ~300yds, they shoot good enough to make the practice count. IMHO, anything over ~400yds is a waste of ammo no matter the target size. YMMV.

Close friend of mine bought a RRA Predator Pursuit last year. Shoots 1/2" groups, consistently, with my "most inaccurate ever made" 55gr fmjbt ammo. I'm using 25 gr of 844, pushing 55gr fmjbt Hornady bullets. Just bought 6000 for about $.08 each from Widener's.
