This classic article from 2010 is making the rounds again. I love the point, we've built so many layers of protection against fire that nobody even thinks about it anymore and an arsonist stands almost zero chance of hurting anybody in a school.

I think we're LONG overdue for some focused activism geared towards getting the same layers of protection in place for other dangers like an active shooter.

Active shooters in schools: The enemy is denial

“How many kids have been killed by school fire in all of North America in the past 50 years? Kids killed... school fire... North America... 50 years... How many? Zero. That’s right. Not one single kid has been killed by school fire anywhere in North America in the past half a century. Now, how many kids have been killed by school violence?”

So began an extraordinary daylong seminar presented by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a Pulitzer Prize nominated author, West Point psychology professor, and without a doubt the world’s foremost expert on human aggression and violence. The event, hosted by the California Peace Officers Association, was held in the auditorium of a very large community church about 30 miles from San Francisco, and was attended by more than 250 police officers from around the region.

Interesting information, now what do we do with it to help protect our rights guaranteed under the 2A?

We deflect/re-direct some of this emotional energy aimed at guns and gun owners into USEFUL activity. Start trying to educate people on effective actions for the future.

I guess something like "Hey I understand that you want to DO SOMETHING and so do I, when fire was a severe danger in schools we started building layers of protection into the schools (physical alterations, fire doors, staff training, tools such as fire extinguishers). I think the time has come to start doing the same thing to protect against evil people who would harm our children by installing things like anti vehicle bollards, man-trap entrances, bullet resistant windows on ground floors, and training school staff in how to respond."

It seems to me that as we divert that emotional energy into proactive and effective actions we will reduce a lot of pressure against our rights.
