I'm thinking of putting a few of my steel AK mags into "cold storage". I'd keep several out for range use but in light of recent events it seems prudent to keep some in reserve. Does anyone have any ideas on how to store them long term so I dont have to worry about rust? One idea I heard was to store them in a container full of oil....

Any thoughts?

Extra bags are available too. Should be enough rust preventative for 8-10 mags.

Vaccum seal each one, place in ammo can with silica gel. Probably last hundreds of years.

buy bucket of hydraulic oil at farm store. remove lid and pour some oil off. fill with mags. fill back up with oil and put lid back on, clean out side of bucket and tape lid down with duct tape. store out of the rain.

Its an AK, a little rust won't hurt anything, adds character :)

Back in the 90's I saw a guy fill a barrel with mags and parts of various guns, minus the wood. He topped it off with stove oil (deisel) and left it beside his shed.

I didnt see it when he opend it (2009) and raessembled the guns and mags, but the guns looked fine and so did the mags. His complaint was that he should have had something to keep them off the bottom, as water condensation had ruiend/rusted the ones on the bottom, not much, but 1/8 inch of water was inthere, as we expect, here inthe Arctic, but he didnt know till then. a good lesson in cashe'ing metal and fuel for doomsday or plain ol' storage..
