Utah Gathering - Let's plan a big one.

Early this summer, or still in the spring before it gets too hot.

What do you guys think?

DATE: June 12th
Place: Strawberry Resevoir.
It's about 20 mintes east of Heber City on Hwy 40 (on the other side of the canyon). Meeting location is at the "Renegade" camping zone. (Park Rangers have area maps if you want one) To get there just go in and go straight through past the ranger station and follow the road south. Renegace is on the southern side of the lake.

I'd like in, but I have one restriction, my truck is down for the forseeable future, all I have is a car. I would be willing to meet somewhere and chip in for gas though.

I would love to meet some of the faces behind the posts.:D

March 4, 2004, 02:56 PM
Ben, I've met many of them, and trust me, they ain't pretty. :)

I'm up for it. We just need to plan far enough in advance that everybody can schedule it. We can do it at the regular old place, and just ferry people up to the top. Or if anybody else has a good spot, please let us know.

How about JUNE 12th.

The Utah Mega Gathering.

Locations? The bowl is a bit problematic for most people... unless you have a 4X4 with some clearance or Larry's Caprice, you can't get up there.

PMAA range? West desert by the Pony Express Trail? I wonder if we could be allowed to use one of Camp Williams ranges... The Farm?

Invite all the utah gun companies and dealers to come out and represent... invite the National Guard units to come out and take a part. Eric can put out some of his holsters to show off... kind of have a non-official gunshow / knob creek... Hey - even invite the local police to participate in some IDPA style shooting competition.
Free CCW Classes, and pistol instruction. Food... Safe kids zone for the little ones to be watched over by those not shooting... like wives and such who don't want to shoot... Bring the family kinda thing. Some kiddie games and face painting and what not.
Even invite *shock* some journalists. Make this a Pro-Gun, not all gun owners are redneck hicks sort of thing... get some positive recognition for the Utah shooting community... and then while the media is watching - ask them if we seem like people too dangerous to be on UofU campus.

With a June 12th date - we can plan ahead, alter scheduals, put some effort into this, and make it a huge freaking event.

March 5, 2004, 12:17 AM
im from eastern NV, if you plan it-they will come!

March 5, 2004, 08:32 AM
Mr. Hill,

That would be wonderful, that's plenty of notice. But if we're going that big, the desert would be the easiest to find the necessary room.

March 5, 2004, 11:47 AM
George, for an event of that nature I would advise doing it latter than June 12th. Seriously. Something like that would require some hard core planning, and scheduling. Plus something like that would just not be possible on an unorganized range. You would have to have to rent all of the FARM or WSA or Lee Kay. Safety officer hat on/ if you were having shooting, selling, BSing, and kiddies, in one general area, you need lanes of fire and different areas. (not to mention water, shade, and toilets) :)

Plus when you have a gathering of that many people, from all sorts of different walks of life, and it is an organized event, you have liability to worry about. Something like this would be better done under an existing (and insured) organization's banner.

I'm a match director locally, and I put on matches with about 50 or so people. These work out well, but that is usually with only one activity going on. Complicate that and it is going to be like herding cats. :) I have no doubt it could be done, but it needs serious work.

A better bet would be to have a regular old fun shoot/get together now, and use that to begin to lay serious plans for the Mega event you are describing.

Plus June 12th I hope to be in Parma Idaho shooting in the MGM Ironman. :p (about 1,500 rounds in one day, yee haw!) So I'm a little biased against that day.

As a long time desert rat, remember this about the west Utah deseret in June....HOT+WIND+DUST=less than good time, not great for shooting or camping either if that interests anyone at all. Mid to late May is much better for the desert, or wait until September. But Hey, If I can make it at all I'm in.

March 7, 2004, 03:25 PM
Guys, trust me on this one, if Corey makes it, I know who the best shooter is going to be. :D

Larry I blush...A guy has one good day and he's marked for life. I can bring a few plate racks as well as a few dozen bowling pins if that is what the group feels like doing. Just gotta hope there is not a bumper crop of those &*6#$^8(*&% crickets this year........:D

March 7, 2004, 09:07 PM
Just gotta hope there is not a bumper crop of those &*6#$^8(*&% crickets this year.

Haven't you read one of the many threads where I mentioned Mormon Cricket hunting? That's the funnest thing you can do with a firearm.

However, for a large group of people who all want to shoot, I can certainly see your point.

Corey ACP
March 7, 2004, 10:03 PM
Yeah, FUME., ......I never saw your posts, but did expend a few 9mm rounds on a couple of occasions. When the little, (big) buggars are climbing on a juniper tree, you can get a pretty good splat. I guess a .22 would work as well, but I'd hate to piss them off. BTW, they carry off their dead. :D

March 8, 2004, 02:31 AM
I was thinking FARM actually. Might cost some money, but we could perhaps get "Sponsors" to cover it.

I think with a little work, we could pull it together.

Wait a second.

Screw it - Let's just get together for a casual shoot someplace and bring the whole crew together.

March 8, 2004, 09:40 AM
Here is a little shameless self promotion, :) we are having a 3gun match at the FARM on March 20th. www.udpl.net if any of you local guys are interested.

Is there an age requirement or something? I was going to join before, but I don't have a rifle :uhoh:, so I couldn't do the 3-gun matches. I do want to do the IDPA stuff though. I'd really like to see what it is you guys do out there... are spectators okay?

Corey ACP
March 8, 2004, 03:00 PM
WES, Absolutely!!! Come out join in the fun. If you prefer to just observe, why thats OK also. I can't imagine showing up and not wanting to bust a few caps though. Everyone that has ever shot at a match was brand new at one time or another. You will find that all at this club are extremely friendly and more than willing to help a first time shooter, (competetor).

Go to the club web page and check it out www.udpl.net

March 8, 2004, 03:12 PM
Wes, you are more than welcome to spectate. If you are interested in shooting I can probably scrounge up a rifle for you. Or if you just want to come along and watch, look for me in the morning. (I'm going to be the really tall, big, balding, goateed guy that is going to be bossing everybody around in the morning during the setup). :)

There is no age limit. We have some teenagers that shoot pretty regularly, and one 16 year old that is really good.

March 8, 2004, 11:55 PM

Oh, MAN! I just checked my schedule, thinking, "If I've got to work, I'll just trade the shift." I thought I was oh-so smart. Well, it turns out that it's one of the big events that night, and there's no one to trade with. All of them are already working.

So I've got to work at 2:00 that afternoon... what time do the festivities begin? I'm hoping that I'll be able to see some shooting before I have to zip back to Tooele to go to work.

 I just can't win.

Dang, how did I miss this one.?? I am in. I would prefer more of a casual shoot out in the west desert, but I would be up for most anything.

George Hill
March 12, 2004, 11:18 AM
I’m going shooting this Saturday, March 13th, 2:00PM.
I’m going to The Utah Shooting Academy , 55 North 1400 West, Lindon, UT 84042 (801) 785-7880. (Driving Directions: From I-15 take exit 276 and turn West on 1600 North. Drive west on 1600 North and turn right (north) on Geneva Road. Drive north on Geneva Road under the freeway overpass, through the traffic light, and over the railroad tracks. Just past the railroad tracks (the ones that run diagonally to Geneva Road), turn left on Center Street (There's a large steel building on the northwest corner). Drive west on Center Street. It will curve to the southwest. Follow it until you come to the stop sign at the end of the street. At its end, Center Street intersects 1400 West. Turn right (northwest) on 1400 West, drive about half a block, and turn left into the driveway. If you come to the barricade at the end of 1400 West, stop, and look at the building directly to your left. That's the Utah Shooting Academy.)

If you are a near there, come shooting, and afterwards, let’s grab something to eat!

Ben Shepherd
March 12, 2004, 03:00 PM
See you there. Looking forward to finally seeing a face behind the posts.

If you are a near there, come shooting, and afterwards, let’s grab something to eat!

Aw, man... I wish I didn't have to work. Unfortunately, my only hours at my crappy job are weekend hours.

At any rate, we should really do this Utah Bash. It would be great. Like 12 Volt, a casual shoot in the desert would be preferable, but I'll try to go to anything.

There aren't a lot of good places in Tooele to shoot (unless you like rough, uneven ground), but I know a couple of places that are within a half hour of here.

Anybody have a favorite spot that could accomodate a lot of people and a lot of noise? :D If it's in the boonies, or free of cost otherwise, we'll probably attract more members... However, I'm a die hard, and I'll pay anything reasonable to meet you guys. ;)

So let's hear them ideas!

We had that small Gathering Saturday... Not bad... but not like the big gatherings we used to have.

Let's hold a Gathering June 12th. Can we all agree to that date?

Let's do it at the PMAA Range... Nice middle ground location for everyone.
PMAA range is like 5 minutes up the canyon from SLC heading East on 80. You take the East Canyon Exit and it's right there on the right. 5 bucks range fee... but I think it's worth it... Out doors, but sheltered, higher altitude so it wont be so hot... and easy to get to, no 4X4 required.

Ben Shepherd
March 15, 2004, 01:09 PM
DONE. On the calendar at work.

March 15, 2004, 05:57 PM
Is there any way we could reserve the place?

March 20, 2004, 09:58 PM
A Utah shoot sounds great. I live in the West Desert, which is separated from Oblivion by a screen door. :D I haven't shot formally since the rifle club in high school (remember those days?).
I'm more accustomed to shooting cap and ball revolvers, but `spose I could bring my repro 1873 Winchester rifle and old, damascus, double-barreled shotgun with black powder shells.
I'd enjoy seeing some of the faces attached to names in here. But I doubt many of you would enjoy seeing me --- after all, I am the "ugly cat."
Count me in.
I offer my services to write a press release for the event. I was a journalist for 12 years before I moved to Utah in 1997. Letting the media know in a professional, non-inflammatory manner would go a long way toward getting it to attend.

George Hill
March 20, 2004, 10:07 PM
Sounds good...

Let's see... we just need to decided upon the location.
Not too far away... ST George is like - OUT of the question... sorry guys...
Utah Shooting Academy is too grungy... The old Bowl is hard to get into unless you have a Jeep.

We just go out to the west desert, like at Delle. However, there are quite a few places near Tooele that are probably closer to SLC. I know of a few nice places we could throw lead in the Tooele Valley, if anybody's interested.

Hey, just saw the thread and I already marked my calendar.

A friend and I were thinking about ordering some Tannerite (http://tannerite.com/ ) to take out to the west desert and blow things up. Might not be the sort of thing to invite the press to though. Wouldn't want them to get the wrong impression...:p

I like George's idea of having some friendly competition set up. That would be a lot more fun than just shooting trash at a dump. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting trash at the dump. That's why I bought the SKS after all. :D

West desert is nice, but the dust can be bad and the subsequent cleanup can be a pain in the rear. Theres also the issue of heat. How about someplace up around Heber or even up towards Strawberry? I have never shot up there, but it's only about an hour away from the valley from either SLC or Provo, plus it has pretty scenery, nice temperatures, and its not too dusty. Anybody know a place up there where we can shoot?

George Hill
April 1, 2004, 10:11 AM

April 2, 2004, 06:54 PM
We've got a good spot near Grantsville, in the Stansbury mountains that is pretty nice. There are trees and grass, so there is shade and places to sit. It's also a little cooler, since it's closer to the mountains.

If that sounds appealing to anyone, perhaps I we could use that (I still need to find out if it's private property... It's not posted, but still...).

EDIT: Did I mention the mormon crickets? :D They're a load of fun to shoot -- especially with scoped .22s.

Where is this place? Not familiar.

Ben Shepherd
April 2, 2004, 08:43 PM
Wes, sounds good. Hook us up with more info soon please.

April 2, 2004, 11:57 PM
I'm still working on getting detail direction or a map, in case you guys want to take the dive, but what I can tell you off the top of my head is that it is near Grantsville Reservoir.

George, I don't know where you live, but I'll assume for now that it's in or near the Salt Lake Valley.

Edit: New instructions on the way. Look at the newer posts for updated directions.

Of course, I'll brush up on instructions and post a map here if we decide that it's the place, and I'll make big THR signs to help you get there.

I need to find out whether or not it's private property... just not sure how to go about that. I doubt that it is -- I've shot there a dozen times and only once seen another person in the vicinity, but it would probably be the right thing to do. Anybody have any idea how I would do that?

April 3, 2004, 12:52 PM
Okay, I've brushed up my instructions, and am working on a map. I'll do this beforehand so that you all may decide if you want to make the drive. ;)

Stand by.

April 3, 2004, 01:58 PM
EDIT: Bad news, guys. It appears that upon further investigation that the spot in question is private property, and is thus no longer valid as a shooting spot. :(

I'm gonna miss that place. :(

Back to the ol' drawing board.

April 3, 2004, 04:29 PM
Ever hear of mapquest?

I'm considering making the trip out.

April 3, 2004, 04:40 PM
Yeah, I know of mapquest, but you need an address for directions... there is no address for wilderness.

Hopefully we can get a decent group, wherever we decide to meet. As long as I can get work off (which I'm pretty sure I can) and can make the drive, I'll be there.

Anybody else have a suggested spot? If we have a TON of people come, it might be better to go to Delle where the URSA shoots, since there is backstop on 3 sides. Lots o' room for lots o' people.

Anyone interested:

I'll be going to the crossroads show on 4/17. Should be there most of the day. I'll post what I'll be wearing later, so you can pick me out.

Food for thought: Even though some of you may not like the jerky, jewelry etc., they take a head count as you go in. The more of us that go, even if just to associate with like-minded people, adds a feather in the cap of 2A supporters.

I'd really like to meet PRCCW and/or Correia there, I'd like to support local businessmen.

April 6, 2004, 10:26 AM
I know a good spot in Saratoga Springs, just south of Eagle Mountain.

Let me know if you guys want to take a look at it. Pistol Shotgun are easy... and it isn't hard to find a rifle spot for 100-200 yards.

April 6, 2004, 02:23 PM
When I shoot it is usually at the FARM, however that has to be scheduled by an organization with liability insurance, and that kind of thing, also most of the Saturdays for the rest of the year are booked by police departments or us. www.udpl.net

When I shoot for plinking or practice, I usually just find a spot south of Utah lake. I like the Bowl that George mentioned earlier, however you do need a 4x4 to get there, or you have to be absolutely insane and take a Chevy Caprice up there. :p Either way I think that it was getting too crowded with yokels. There are some other good spots south of Saratoga Springs, but you need to get them staked out pretty early.

I noticed that somebody mentioned WSA. Problem with WSA is that you need to have a WSA range officer with you at all times or you can't shoot. Anybody know if you can rent the PMAA range? It is a nice little range.

April 6, 2004, 02:48 PM
I can stake out some spots in Saratoga early in the morning if we decide to go there... that's just a FYI. I've always got a good book to read.

How about JUNE 12th.

Great date, my wife will be out of town with the little one. Just me and the dogs.

I know an awesome area that is little used, but I can't remember where exactly we could shoot out there. Off the Pony Express trail just SW of Dugway Proving Grounds, Simpson Springs Campground. If you've got a Utah Atlas & Gazeteer, its page 44 A1.

Way away from civilization.
Campground for those that want to spend a night or two. $2 per night per site. Water available, but its not potable.
There is a Ghost town not far away for additional entertainment
I'm pretty sure we could shoot just south of the campground a little ways.

Haven't been there in 3 years, don't remember where we can shoot.
Way away from civilization. Was almost a half tank in my Jeep from Lehi to there. I think there is gas available in Faust, Vernon or some other pisshole in that area.
Water isn't potable.
Campgsites can't be reserved.
I have to try and get that friday and saturday off from work. :barf:

Anyone with a 4x4 want to go out there and check it out? I'm going to be crunched for time this month, we're buying a house in West Jordan.

Edit: The BLM site shows hunting as an available activity, so I'm assuming that there is areas where we could get away with shooting up the hillside.

April 7, 2004, 11:26 PM
Cool. I live in West Jordan. West West West West Jordan out by Kearns, but still just barely in West Jordan. :)

April 8, 2004, 12:14 AM
I was at Simpson Springs Campground a few weeks ago. Don't know if there's much of an area to shoot there. Campground spots occupy the land between the road and the base of the hills. Also, there are currently sheep and cattle in that area; at least there was three weeks ago.
I'll try to get there this weekend and give it a look-over.
I don't know that the BLM would be thrilled about shooting in a campground area, even if it were toward the hills. You may wish to call the Bureau of Land Management office in Salt Lake City and inquire.
Ghost town nearby? Hmmm ... didn't know that. The closest "ghost towns" I know of is Gold Hill, which is about 60 miles west of that campground.
If you decide to have the event at Simpson Springs Campground, let the Security Force at nearby U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground know. Since the Sept. 11 attack, things have been antsy at the army post. As a matter of courtesy, you could let them know what the gunfire is about; they would be pleased that you advised them.
You cannot fire north from the campground, or your projectiles will land on Dugway Proving Ground. Not a good thing since you'd also be firing toward the administrative buildings some miles to the north.
On the plus side, this campground is rarely full; not even on Fourth of July weekends. I'm not sure about the availability of water. Be safe and bring your own. Also, ensure you have plenty of extra gasoline. You are not allowed to go onto Dugway Proving Ground to gas up.
There is a gas station/convenience store 25 miles south of I-80 (Exit 77) on the Skull Valley Road. However, it keeps odd hours and you cannot be sure it will be open. The same may be said of the store/gas station at Vernon.
By all means, top off your gas tank in Tooele or at the Tooele exit by Interstate 80.
Prior to the Sept. 11 attack we might have talked the Army into showing up with a couple of Humvees, landing a helicopter or even displaying an M1 Abrams tank but not today.
Let me allay any fears you might have about exposure to chemical or biological agents. It's just not an issue.
U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground is the nation's premiere center for the testing of defenses against chemical and biological warfare agents. It tests items such as protective suits and masks, filtration systems, decontaminants, decontamination systems and so on.
International treaties, of which the U.S. is a signatory, ban the use of such agents outdoors, even for defense testing. All outdoor testing is done using simulants --- benign substances with characteristics very similar to the actual agent. Actual agents are used from time to time to test an item, in multiple-walled indoor chambers with redundant safety and air filtration systems.
Given its mission, you can understand why the folks at Dugway Proving Ground scrutinize what goes on within and around its borders.
If you decide on Simpson Springs Campground, I don't forsee that Dugway would have a problem --- as long as they were advised well before the event and didn't suddenly hear all this gunfire a few miles away.

April 8, 2004, 10:04 AM
Don't know if there's much of an area to shoot there

I was picturing shooting south of the campground by maybe 1/2 to 1 mile.

April 8, 2004, 01:09 PM
If you decide to have the event at Simpson Springs Campground, let the Security Force at nearby U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground know.......as long as they were advised well before the event and didn't suddenly hear all this gunfire a few miles away.

Well, I don't see how they can have any say so on what goes on outside the proving grounds borders, and I'd rather not tell them I'll be nearby and armed. Especially since that area is a known hunting ground. The Army has no authority outside the Proving Grounds. We'd have to make sure that everyone knew not to stray NW of the campgrounds, though.

I don't know that the BLM would be thrilled about shooting in a campground area, even
I'm not thrilled about the idea of shooting in a campground area, either. I'm thinking a little bit south up against the hillside.

Its been awhile since I've been out there, and I've only made one trip that far. A scouting trip might be in order. Anyone think they can go check it out?

I think I'll leave the final decision on where to gather to George, just adding my $.02 to the kitty.

April 9, 2004, 01:35 AM
This place sounds pretty good... but the distance from a gas station or potable water and all that sounds like this would be a second choice. If we are looking that far west... why not look that far east? Strawberry has lots of camping and areas we could shoot... and a lake and streams... and fishin... and there is gas food and water not too far either. Just head east on HWY 40 past Heber... go up and over the pass and your there.
One advatage - trees - shade - cooler temperatures - runs for ICE for those camping over night.
Looking at distances it's sixes. Those in SLC can go through park city to Heber and those southwards can cruise through Provo Canyon. Prettier drive that out into the surface of Mercury. And we wouldn't have to notify a twitchy security force.

I am liking the camping idea... Saturday and Sunday... That would be fun.

Not sure if you would want to see me when I wake up though...

Does anyone know of a specific area by strawberry? I've been up there a few times, but usually just driving through. If someone knows a spot, I would come up and help stake out an area for us.

If we're doing this on June 12th, we better get it figured out in the next couple weeks guys.

April 9, 2004, 09:46 AM
Sounds good to me.
Is there an area near Strawberry where we could shoot with a good backstop? Been by there, never been there.

April 9, 2004, 10:08 AM
Strawberry has my vote. Have to be on call that weekend, but I am on call in Heber, so I wasn't supposed to travel too far out of Utah County (where i live)... but now I'll be even closer.

Strawberry is good... and much prettier than the "proving grounds".

If I was to retire anywhere in Utah it would be in a cabin at Strawberry...

We'll have to have someone scout the area for the propper location/site. We have time to do it. I have been there shooting before... but it was a LONG time ago and I wasn't driving so I don't remember exaclty here the spot was.

April 9, 2004, 11:10 AM
Strawberry sure is a pretty place, but I don't know of any shooting spots near there. EDIT: George just said there are some, so I obviously don't know jack. :o

I found another place in the Tooele Valley, if anyone is interested. This one is just south of Stockton, and is a very big, very nice place. It's a gravel pit area with lots of backstops and plenty of range for rifles. The only downside I can think of is that it's occasionally windy (Stockton is at the hight of the Utah Wind Funnel).

It isn't too far from Tooele, so food, fuel, etc. is only about 8 miles away.

If this sounds appealing to anybody, I can draw up plans like I did before so that people can see if they want to make the drive. People camp near there, so that would be a possibility too.

Shooting spots near Strawberry... There was 10 years ago. We will have to check it out.

Ben Shepherd
April 9, 2004, 03:35 PM
Guys, sounds like Wes can do some scouting in Toole for us, but can anyone scout strawberry?
I would myself, but work is an absolute:cuss: right now, Monday through Friday 60 hrs/wk, and my 4X4 is down right now.

I will come help stake out space regardless of where we meet.

You have no idea how much crap I had to go through to get that Saturday off. I need the break badly.

Lets get this done!!!!

April 9, 2004, 06:14 PM
Does anyone live near Strawberry that could scout for us? That would be a fun trip, but don't forget one thing when you're anywhere near there -- MOSQUITOS!

That's one plus to shooting at the place by stockton, not as pretty as Strawberry though.

April 10, 2004, 05:43 PM
I think Strawberry would be best. Simpson Springs is a long haul for some, and not convenient for water, gas or groceries.
Atc1man ... I realize the Army has no authority at Simpson Springs Campground, since it is outside Dugway Proving Ground's fenceline. I only suggested letting the Army know as a courtesy, so some bubble-head didn't see a group of people with firearms and call in a gathering of terrorists or some other nonsense.
I know many of the folks at Security and Law Enforcement at Dugway. Many of them are very strong supporters of RKBA.
Again, I think Strawberry would be much better. It would certainly offer more recreation.
Besides, I'd just as soon not too many folks discovered the beauty and history of the West Desert area, rather enjoy it myself :D

April 13, 2004, 11:16 PM
Any more word on Strawberry, anyone?

George Hill
April 15, 2004, 02:04 AM
I am glad you asked.

I was just there today. Stopped by to ask about the camping and the shooting and all that...
The guy there was very cool.

Camping outside of the prepped camping zone is FREE.
Shooting outside of the prepped camping zone is COOL.

The guy even laughed and told a story of last year when some campers freaked out because they saw some people shooting... (in a safe direction away from roads and all that) The Forest guy said "So?"

It was beautiful out there. There is a camping zone called "Renegade" and that area to the west or to the south of that looks like our ticket. Even has some 4X4 trails.

So... the shooting is good and the camping is free and no one can bother us...

I officially nominate Strawberry as our Gathering place.
Any seconds?

April 15, 2004, 08:20 AM
Thanks for the legwork George. I put in for the time off, hopefully I get it.

Ben Shepherd
April 15, 2004, 08:20 AM
George, I'm in. What about getting there early to kind of stake some ground out? I'm sure weekends are busy up there.

And can I get my mustang at least into the area, or do I have to have a truck?

Related to my other thread on the NRA meeting. The NRA rep said:

CHECK THIS OUT GEORGE!!!!! The friends of the NRA have donated $100,000 to a group in the UINTAH BASIN to help build a range, and I don't mean another damn golf driving range either. It will be an officially sanctioned range. It's to include shotgun, pistol, 1,000 yard rifle, and buildings for meetings etc. I forget the name of the exact area, something hills? They should be breaking ground this year.

So there the NRA is finally doing something for us folks.

As for the gun show on Sat. April 17th:

I'll be wearing a grey Friends of the NRA cap, a grey GOA tshirt with a minuteman on the front, and on the back jokes about spoons making rosie fat, pencils misspelling words, etc, in red lettering.

For a picture of me dig up the "a ruger collection" thread in the revolver forum, I'm the short guy in the green and black collared shirt in middle of the group, facing the camera.

Due to work I'll only be there the first half of Sat. I'll be in line well before it opens though.

George Hill
April 15, 2004, 10:26 AM
Yeah they keep talking about building a range... if they do it will be very near where I am living. All the talk points to a specific location and I've not heard any others. I could walk to it if they build it.
The old range, "The Vernal Rod and Gun Club" is in trouble. They are building some huge structures RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT. Seriously... they got Birdshot raining down on the construction sight. It's silly.

Not that Vernal needs a range... it's all Range out here.

Strawberry sounds good. I like that area. I hope my wife has our 3rd kid on time, then I will have no issues. Need to start stocking up on ammo now. :) If I go I will probably run my Suburban. I am in Farmington. First spots are reserved for PCRCCW and my BIL, other than that there is room for a couple more to catch a lift.

April 15, 2004, 01:26 PM
12 Volt, perhaps a friend and I could come along with you guys?

I'm going to have to get the weekend off, but it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm bringing my family... wives, kids are welcome to come. It's a great area for a relaxing weekend of camping with friends... doing some shooting... fishing if you like...

I am jazzed for this. June 12th is too far away!!!

Ben Shepherd
April 15, 2004, 04:30 PM
Can anyone come up and stay over Friday night and help stake out a good sized area?
I'm willing to, but I may need to be fairied up to where you're thinking if the mustang can't make it.

Would all who are going please check out my NRA meeting thread please? Let me know if I can get some help or input on that.

Can we get ahold of the ranger station up there and let them know whats up? I'm sure the local ranger station can help me out. I'll make the phone calls if someone can get me the exact area we're going to be. Just to make sure a different group won't run over the top of us or something.

George Hill
April 15, 2004, 06:10 PM
Since we are not going to be in a pay area, we can't reserve any place... this south side of the lake there is less active, so we should have more freedom down that way.

I can't make it Friday, but if you scout around on Friday and find a spot - we need to some how make it known to the rest of the group coming. That will be hard. That's why I'm thinking of a meeting location in the Renegade area (In Army terms Renegade is our Objective Rally Point) and then once we are all there we can move to the target zone.
If anyone is lost, go back to the ORP and wait for contact.

Ben Shepherd
April 15, 2004, 06:37 PM
We could always do the follow the paper plate trick if it comes down to that.

April 15, 2004, 07:34 PM
I would be happy to sit at the spot and launch 37mm Parachute Flairs until you guys find the area! :)

Ok, fine. an ORP is fine and then we can move to our FDA.

USMC can you come up Friday night?

April 15, 2004, 11:24 PM
There's lot's of land up by Strawberry but your going to have to scout around and find a good location with a backstop. You'll have to drive on some dirt roads at least a mile or two to find a suitable location.

I suggest scouting before hand and using a GPS to mark the spot. Weekends are busy up there. Lot's of 4wheelers.

However, the fishing in the lake is outstanding.

I spend lot's of time staying on my boat up there...great views.

April 16, 2004, 09:51 AM

My wife would be coming as well... and...

Well, I'll be honest. I hate mosquitos... THEY LOVE ME.

So, I avoid lakes at dusk and dawn.... so camping for me is a Spring, late fall, and winter thing :)

Any idea on a possible head count? So far it's not looking as big as I'd hoped. I'd sure like to meet a bunch of you guys. This one IS my summer vacation, I'd like to make the most of it.

April 17, 2004, 08:41 PM
Apologies to all who went to the gunshow today -- I was going to go, but I've been having a severe fit of migraines.

Alas, I'll have to wait even longer to meet some of you. :(

P.S. How was the gunshow? Any good?

Was it a Crossroads of the West gunshow? That will answer the question.

April 18, 2004, 09:15 AM
Gunshow: More of the same old, same old. More overpriced guns than you can shake a stick at. Decent ammo prices. A LOT of vendors that don't belong at a gunshow. Quite a few "post ban" rifles in "pre-ban" dress.

April 19, 2004, 09:50 AM

Count me in. It's been since forever that I have been to Strawberry. Did catch some fish, though.
Maybe we could set up some sort of a rendezvous or communication plan so the ones arriving later can contact and find the camp. Sign on a post or a CB channel, mayhaps?
I think Friday would be a good time to get up there and have trout for supper!

George Hill
April 22, 2004, 12:08 AM
To get to Renegade, all you do is drive straight in past the ranger stations by the highway... just head south along that main road and it's at the southern end of the lake. Pretty easy... can't miss it.
That will be the meeting spot where we can gather.
My Bronco will be parked there. It's big, green and tan, and ugly. My wolf, Ranger, will be with us. As will my family. Wife and all 5 boys. We wont be hard to miss either.

We might just camp there at Renegade if they have nice areas and water and stuff... The Bride says that would be much easier on her, so it might be worth it to us (meaning Family) to camp there. We don't have to camp and shoot from the same spot.

I'm flexable. METT & The Bride Dictates.

April 26, 2004, 12:33 AM

This is turning in to quite a thread. I like it :D

Here a thought. Go ahead and tell me I am a crazy insane redneck. Or, go ahead and join me and we'll have some fun.

Anybody ever heard of tannerite?

I have seen some folks talk about it over on the AK-47.net forums. Sounds like great fun.

It all depends on what sort of area we end up shooting in as to whether we could shoot it or not. I would want to make sure we had a decent backstop and no dry stuff around that might ignite. Hopefully someone can scout out the area soon and we'll know what we are dealing with.

Like I said, just a thought. Looks like we could get it for $98 bucks for a case of 20. Not sure how much shipping is. I am in for $20.00 if others want to contribute. I'll even handle the ordering and collection of funds if we want to get some for our shoot.

George Hill
April 26, 2004, 02:17 PM
I live in Vernal actually... about 2 miles away from where they are going to be building the new NRA range.
And yup... whatever you got.

Those exploding targets. That's nice and all... but WOW are they expensive.
A jug of colored water explodes just fine for being free.

April 27, 2004, 07:22 PM
This get together sounds like fun, I'll definitely be there.

Hopefully, I smaller, less official gathering could be made, a bit sooner? I'd like to make some new shooting friends before I head up to camp with gun nuts I don't know:D

If anyone is interested I will planning a trip out to the west desert in the next week or so. I shoot just south of the Dugway exit, behind that giant rock monolith. Shoot me a PM if anyone is interested in coming along.

For those interested:

I will be going shooting at the shooting academy in Lindon next week in the afternoon. I've had it with work thinking they can run me 70-80 hours per week for 2-3 months solid. Yard looks like hell, haven't been shooting in over 2 weeks, truck is STILL down, clutch is shot in the mustang, can't manage to get any errands ran, etc. UUUGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I need the break, told the boss I am going to take one afternoon off next week to blow some steam. I'll post which day on Monday morning, after I talk to my supervisor. He'll have to cover me, and he's on vacation(what's that?) in disneyland this week.

May 8, 2004, 03:29 PM
Ben, just let me know when, and i'll come down. My schedule is clear Wed -fri.

I'm thinking of picking up a new Bersa .380 also, so maybe I'll grab that, and this could be a good chance to break it in.

May 13, 2004, 08:24 AM
Well, at this point I seriously doubt I'll be there. My request for time off was denied, I'm too far down the list for requests.
If someone wants to get together on a wed/thurs let me know.

What kind of company do you work for that you can't take off time when you want to take time off?

May 13, 2004, 10:19 AM
He's an Air Traffic Controller -- supposed to be the most stressful job anywhere. That's what ATC in his name means.

I work for you, and you, and him over in the corner...
I'm a federal employee :neener:
To confuse the matter further:
We have to have a minimum number of persons on shift at any time. We have prime time vacation bidding once a year, based on senority. I bid mine for other times of the year, since May-August is very hard to get. After that, we have spot requests, but thats first come, first serve, and falls after prime time. I could still possibly get it, but it appears unlikely.

He's an Air Traffic Controller -- supposed to be the most stressful job anywhere.
Ding, ding, ding, we have a weiner :neener:
It's not all that stressful, to be honest....most of the time. Remember the crappy weather that came through this week? Thunderstorms, icing, low visibility, and we have a closed runway (repaving)....that's when I earn my pay for sure. :neener:

It sorta picked me.
Here I am, 17 years old, in front of the Marine recruiter.
"I wanna blow **** up! Ooorrraaahhhh kill death maim!"
"Your scores are kind of high....let me see what's available"
Dad (retired Gunny) calls recruiter behind my back
"He's an idiot, what good jobs are available"
Next day
"Okay whats available?"
"Air Traffic Controller....there's an enlistment bonus, to boot"
"HHHMMMMM....money? Sure, I'll do whatever that is..."
Its now 11 years later, and I pay more in taxes every year than I made as a Corporal in a year.

that reads, ATCAV8R.
Good find.

May 13, 2004, 11:18 AM
Yeah, we've had some bad conditions lately. I don't know what it was like there, but on Monday, visibility in the Tooele Valley was certainly NOT above minimums.

Kinda sad, because where I work (Deseret Peak Complex) there's the DC-10 skydiving plane at Bolinder Field that buzzes us several times daily. Those radial engines sound soooo cooooool.

Who knows? Me or my Dad may have talked to you before and never even known it.

Anyway, you have my thanks for a difficult job well done.

I started on my Private, but can't finish... the FAA won't let me fly because of my migraines -- and the meds I take for them.

My Dad is tearin' it up, though. He's been flying for about 2 years now. He just took his CFI test and is about to take his Commercial checkride. He flies through Salt Lake Int'l airspace all the time from Bountiful-Skypark.

I work in the TRACON (Radar), I'm sure I've talked to him before.

George, check your PM.

May 23, 2004, 06:02 PM
So, with this getting closer, I want to try to set up a car-pool option, or a caravan option. I personally do not know my way around mountain areas, and get lost VERY easily, especially in camp sites, every site looks the same.

So, anyone want to meet up at the Big K-Mart at the mouth of Parley's Canyon on Saturday? I should have room in my car for another person if anyone needs a ride too.

Edit: this is how little I know about those big rocks to the east. Which canyon is the best to take to get to Heber? Isn't that down by Provo Canyon? Anyone have some easy directions from Salt lake?

May 23, 2004, 06:09 PM
Go E on I80 past park city to 40, go south towards Heber. 40 will take you to Strawberry res., not sure where the area is exactly.
One suggestion, go to walmart, Kmart, gart, sportsmans, somewhere like that and pick up a Utah Atlas and Gazeteer. Breaks the state down into page sized grids, including small towns, rivers/streams, dirt roads, and campgrounds. Good map to have handy for excursions into the woods.

May 23, 2004, 06:14 PM
OKay, so Parley's Canyon would be the place to start. So, anyone want to meet up at the Big K-Mart on Parleys Dr. It's about a block west of Foothill Dr. We can meet up there around Noon, and caravan up to the site.

I've got a state atlas, I'll take a look at it when I get home from work.

May 23, 2004, 06:19 PM
This (http://www.delorme.com/atlasgaz/) is the map I'm talking about, although I think its sold cheaper at local outlets. Its topographical, and has alot of recreational detail. I've used it to explore the Uintas and West desert and have never been lost using it. Also has GPS grids.

May 23, 2004, 06:25 PM
CrudeGT, I prefer going through Provo Canyon as opposed to Parleys... It takes a little longer, but it's a lot easier on gas consumption -- not all of those ups and downs. Prettier, too.

I've been to Strawberry all of my life, but not for the last year or two. I'm familiar with the area, but not with all of the campgrounds. I'm sure that we can figure it out, though.

However, I'm open to either option.

May 23, 2004, 07:01 PM
Either way works for me. And gas conservation is a GOOD thing right now. When you head that way, do you still come through Salt Lake? or is there another route from Tooele that's quicker to Provo Canyon? We could meet up closer to Provo canyon if that's easier?

Ben, that sounds like fun. What time are you going to head up? (p.s. I'm pick up a 1944 Russian rifle end of this week, can't wait to shoot it, looks like this camping trip will be a great oppurtunity.)

The only thing that is keeping me second guessing this trip is that I have ZERO camping gear. I'm probably not even going to be staying over night on Saturday, unless I get too smashed and someone has a truck bed I can pass out in... (I've been known to do that).

May 24, 2004, 04:08 PM

I already like you :D
Sounds like its time to invest in some camping gear. Gart and Big5 are having Memorial day sales, I saw some decent deals. Given the drastic temperature differences that can happen around here, I'd suggest getting a sleeping bag in the 20-30 degree range and getting a fleece liner or bag incase it gets colder than that.
Sleeping bag, tent, lantern, lawn chair...and you're set!

May 24, 2004, 04:44 PM
Well folks, I want in. I'll have to check with my better half to see if there are any conflicting activities.

I'll bring some rifles (lever-action .22 and semi-auto .223), but I'm hoping some of you will show off your handguns and let me try a few to see what fits me best. I'm hoping to get a handgun in the not-too-distant future, but I need to find what I'm most comfortable with.

What kind of gun is it? 1944... Mosin Nagant?

Just kinda curious.

May 24, 2004, 08:41 PM
Honestly, i couldn't tell ya. I don;t know much about rifles, except that it's pretty. it has a fixed magazine, fires 7.62mm, bolt action.

It's one of the ones that was dumped into the ocean in barrels after WWII and Century Arms are selling the ones that still work. They are on sale right now for $79. I'll get more info next time I go in.

Looks a lot like this, except it doesn't come with the belt and ammo pouch.

May 24, 2004, 10:35 PM
Crude, note that the ammo you want to use for that is 7.62x54R. Not regular 7.62 Nato which will in fact chamber, but not safely. :)

May 24, 2004, 11:48 PM
That is going to be VERY handy info. Thank you very much Larry. If things fo according to plan, I should have this with me on Saturday when I come up to meet you at Lee Kay. So you can check it out.

Also, I got the time off work on Saturday, so I will definitely be to your class. Also I ran into another friend who has been debating about getting her permit. and she is very excited to go. She also has to make sure it fits her schedule. I will let you know about that as soon as I can.

Yeah, that extra 3 millimeters makes all the difference!:D

May 26, 2004, 01:06 PM
Cool, look forward to seeing you guys Saturday. 10:00 am at Lee Kay.

I got to meet Ben yesterday. Good guy. Turns out that we only work a couple of blocks away from each other.

Crude, you will like that Mosin. They are solid guns. A little rough sometimes, but they are tough, and the action is about as simple as can be. I've got an M44 that I use once in awhile as a beater gun. It has actually been pretty darn accurate. Be careful with the ammo though, some 7.62x54R is sold as non-corrosive and it really isn't. To be safe, when you get done shooting run a little bit of Windex on a rag through the barrel to neautralize the corrosiveness. (or hot soapy water works good too). I ran some "non-corrosive" Russian ammo through mine once, and didn't clean it for a few days. Sure enough I got some rust in the barrel. Ugh.

May 26, 2004, 01:33 PM

June 12th, huh? Quick question for you guys: Is this just a get-together or is it going to have shooting or is it shooting and camping? Reading through several pages I missed out on some of the finer details that determine whether this is a green light or a no-go from the missus. We're expecting our first little prattling one at the end of June, so the 12th is starting to get into the red-zone. Strawberry is a long ways away from our OB/GYN... :uhoh:

If it is just a get-together with some shooting in the morning, I could probably wing it. Perhaps I could carpool down with Eric and CrudeGT. The only thing that I would be worried about is my wife going into labor and me being down in the south-40 and missing one of the most important moments in my life.

Then again, perhaps a bit of fresh mountain air would do some good...

...not to mention the fresh smell of burnt powder in the air.

It's whatever you can do. A few of us are going up and staying the weekend, some are only coming up saturday. Hope you can make it.

May 28, 2004, 12:01 PM
At this point, I'm absolutely sure I can't go.
Anyone here into flyfishing or camping and off during the week?
I will be reserving a campsite this week for June 16th (tues) and 17th (wed) to go fish along the Mirror Lake Hwy. My primary goal is to wet a flyline and drink a few beers. PM me for more details.

May 28, 2004, 12:38 PM
Alright guys, (I think I see a pattern here :fire: ) Work is trying to screw me out of going. I'm still working on it, but I just have a gut feeling that I'm going to get the ????ty end of the deal again.

I've about had it with this job... who knows, if all works out, I will probably have quit that job by the 12th.

I will be perpetually pissed if I don't get to go on this one.

May 28, 2004, 01:07 PM
I plan on going up and doing a bit of fishing, too. Haven't done that in over a decade and not in UT since I was about 9.

Remember, June 12th is free fishing day. Catch limits still apply.

May 28, 2004, 01:11 PM
Fume, if you need to beat up a boss, I can do it... I work for beer... :D

tetchaje1, Im gonna head up Friday, probably with Ben, just to get an idea of where the spot is, but I won't be staying up there Friday night. So i can certainly help you get up there. What part of the state are you in?

George Hill
May 28, 2004, 02:39 PM
I went by Strawberry yesterday... the water is blue, the land is green, and it is just gorgeous.

Let's see... the 12th there is a big Class III shoot going on put on my Impact Arms or something like that... and then there is a big airshow going on at Hill AFB.

Maybe we should reschedual this?

May 28, 2004, 04:09 PM
Rescheduling would probably work better for me, right now. My wife dropped it on me that we are probably going to be doing a birthing class that Saturday. It isn't set in stone yet, but a post-partum shoot would work better with baby's schedule... :p

I'm in SLC up by the U. Eric lives up in Btfl.

May 28, 2004, 04:32 PM
Right now, rescheduling would work best for me. I know what a pain in the ass it is to reschedule something like this, though.

Then again, if there is so much going on, it probably won't be crowded up at Strawberry.

Just let us know what you think, George. I'll try to make it either way.

Ben Shepherd
May 28, 2004, 04:46 PM
If you guys rescedule my group's out. No way in hell I can get another weekend off this summer, dad can't reshedule either, one brother already scheduled between 2 full time jobs. But whatever.:uhoh:

AAAHHH :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: .

Great end to a great month I guess:cuss: :banghead:.

Make sure to post a report when you do go though.

I think we've had the date set for quite a while. While I live close to HAFB and would like to see the air show, I would rather go out and shoot.
My wife had the baby early, so I no longer have that issue.

I also thought that the Impact machine gun shoot was June 19th. I was planning on going to that as well. I am pretty sure it is the weekend after we are shooting for.

I plan to drive my Suburban and I plan on camping out. So BIL and I plus probably the Fumegator will ride in my car. Eric and his new wife I believe are coming and they are not camping out last I heard. So they will probably take there own car.

Should be a couple of spots left in my ride if we all don't bring too much stuff.

Whatever you guys decide. I am for keeping the date.

Another thing I thought of is if any of us have those little Motorolla radios we could bring them and if we set up a channel that we all know, then if we get close we can direct each other to the spot. I believe they have a two mile range. I just got a set and am dying to try them out.

Class III shoot. June 19

May 29, 2004, 10:55 AM
I, also, am keeping the date of the 12th. That is the weekend I got off work. Like I said earlier, I don't have any camping gear, so staying over night may be an issue, but I will be up there all Saturday and Sunday.

tetchaje1, If you wannt meet up, and carpool up there just let me know. I live in Murray.

May 29, 2004, 11:54 AM
Time to get some camping gear!

Cool, I was going to go anyway, glad others will be there too.

Just got out of Corrieas CCW class, picked up some of my MOLON LABE gear.:neener: Great that he lives and works close to me, eh? He's still planning on the 12th as well.

Met PCRCCWs wife, nice girl. Cute too.:D

PCRCCW: Send me a PM with contact info, I need to speak with you.

May 29, 2004, 05:09 PM
Ben, you were there? and I missed ya? I got there late, and didn't want to interrupt, so I just hung out and checked out the range for a bit. But I went back out there around 1:45 to meet Correia, and check out the shooting portion of the class. He;s a great guy. I can't wait to chat with him more at the camp out.

Atc1man, I here ya. The down side is that I go camping about once every few years. So spending the money on camping would be a lost cause. I wouldn't use it enough to get my money's worth. BUt maybe I'll rent a sleeping bag and tent from REI or something.

Ben Shepherd
May 29, 2004, 06:45 PM
Yeah, I was there, but I left right after the classroom portion, 'cause I had to go to work. :(

May 29, 2004, 07:05 PM
yeah, I had to work today too. I need a new job... One with weekends off.

But it was cool to finally put a face to the name.

May 29, 2004, 07:17 PM
The down side is that I go camping about once every few years.

Ah, I usually try and go a few times a year.

Check a few yardsales, you might find something cheap.

May 29, 2004, 09:03 PM
I think my brother has some camping stuff, I'll call him tomorrow and see what I can borrow. I jsut don't know if I can justify buying camping equip right now. I'm so short on funds I'm doing sidework for friends to help cover utilities. it's one of those times of year.

May 30, 2004, 12:00 AM
No problem, mostly just giving you a hard time. This is a great place to camp, though. My bills (besides house) will be 100% paid off in 9 months. I will be buying a pop up camper and a truck.

May 30, 2004, 02:35 AM
Sweet, maybe you and I can chat about debt management. I'm always up for new suggestions. Can't wait to meet ya.

May 30, 2004, 05:07 PM
I'm planning on bailing out for a few (week)days in June. Anyone know of some inexpensive cabin rentals with very easy access to flyfishing in Utah or Southern Idaho?
I will have my hounds with me, so somewhere pooch friendly would be nice.

May 30, 2004, 08:55 PM
That was a fun class. :)

Crude it was good to meet you in person. You missed Ben by probably 15 minutes is all. I actually ended up staying there a few more hours doing some remedial work with one shooter who was pretty much brand new. Once I switched her over to one of my revolvers with some soft reloads she did much better.

I love teaching. I still can't believe that people actually PAY me to talk about guns. :) The downside is that you need to condense everything you can into 4 or so hours. It really makes you realize how important it is for people to just keep learning on their own continually.

I'm still planning on being there on Saturday the 12th.

May 30, 2004, 09:38 PM
I was talking with my best friend's dad. He used to be a Salt Lake cop who taught CCW classes with this brother, who was also a cop. The class they taught was 16 hours, over 3 days. But that was probably 5+ years ago. I would love to go through a multiple day class. I think it's funny that it takes many weeks of reading and practice to get a license to operate a 2ton vehicle, but it only takes 4 hours and a piece of paper to qualify someone to carry a firearm. Always found that odd.

Larry, if you ever get that 500 round class you were talking about, up and running. Let me know. I would be willing to help in anyway possible, just for oppurtunity to participate. It sounds like loads of fun.

May 31, 2004, 11:58 PM
Can do.

It is interesting in that it takes me about 4 hours to go over the stuff that the state requires, plus anything else I can think of. Some states require 12 or 16 hours of instruction. (I believe Texas requires something like that), but what always intrigues me is that there is almost no difference between Texas (lots of mandatory training) and Vermont (no training, no permit neccesary) in the percentage of people carrying guns that they have a problem with. We have a pretty low training requirement compared to some, yet there have only been a handful of Utah permit holders that have screwed up.

Makes me happy. :) Our folks really are the best type of people out there.

The people who are serious about it are going to learn on their own as much as possible. Personally I'm going to throw a party when we finally someday go Vermont/Alaska style and it puts me out of business. :p

I'll let you know when we do that class. JackStraw and I need to work out the details.

June 1, 2004, 01:08 AM
When that gracious day come, and utah goes VT/AL style, I'll be doing the happy dance on the state capitol front lawn, with shoulder holster+P89, Hip holster+xd40, and shotgun slung over my shoulder. You can hold me to that.

June 1, 2004, 12:39 PM
Since I can't go, I'm going to head out into the desert to go shoot on Thursday, the 10th. Anyone interested?
Since I'm bacheloring it, we can BBQ, clean guns, and drink beer at my haus afterwards. If I get any nibbles I'll set a time and meeting point.

Also, the following week, I'm planning on going fishing and camping. Two nights camping, on the other side of the Mirror Lake highway somewhere. June 15th and 16th. PM me for further details

Lastly, for those that don't know, there is a yahoo email discussion list setup for utah gun owners/enthusiasts. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ut-firearms/ for signup information.

June 1, 2004, 03:38 PM

Okay, we wont reschedual...

Check this out - I'm not going to say any names or anything but some cat in the firearms lube business that wants us to test out some new C.L.P. product and is sending me a box of samples.
Should be interesting.

We will be there! Ranger is looking forward to it!

Wow, that sounds cool. We'll have to put the new lube throught the wringer.

Well, it turns out that I've got to work saturday morning at 7:00 :fire:, but I may be off by around noon, so I can probably still come up. :)

It very well could be, 12V... Did he give you any details about the product?
Because he was really vague with me.

We shall see! We will stress test the crap out of it... Utah is a harsh place for a gun to live and work in.
Winters are cold as hell.
Summers are hot as hell.
CCW guns get sweaty.
Open carried guns get broiled.
And all the guns when shot can get dusty, gritty, and flat out filthy because even in the mountians, we are still in the middle of a desert.

This cat must be super confident in his product.

George Hill
June 7, 2004, 01:23 AM
Small change in plans for me... I'll be there in my silver Jeep Cherokee alone. Might bring Ranger, but he gets gunshy. When the guns go off, he has to curl up around my feet.
Anyways... I'm still going.
Who else is coming?
Bring lots of guns I've got a couple things I might want to horse trade with.

June 7, 2004, 02:39 AM
I'll be there. Got the weekend off. What time are we meeting up there?

And, if anyone wants to meet up at the mouth of Parley's Canyon, in the Big Kmart parking lot, let's set a time. I have a dark red Mitsubishi 3000GT.

Who here is going up friday?

Pleae post or shoot me a PM, so we can co-ordinate on when and where.

(I hope a bunch are going friday, so we can stake out a decent area for the saturday only people.)

Depending on my brother I may still need off-pavement assistance in the transportation dept.:banghead: If it comes down to it, I've got a big backpack and strong legs I guess.

(If you see a white hatchback 1989 mustang parked on the side of the dirt road heading in to the area, and a 200lb. bald guy that is about 5'7" with a camo NATO pack and a couple slinged rifles hoofin' it, give him a lift in, will ya?)

June 7, 2004, 10:41 AM
I'm ultra-pissed that I've got to work on Saturday morning... hopefully I can get off around noon to buzz up there.

I even bought a high-pistol-caliber dueling tree just for this trip to have some fun with you guys. *sigh*

Anybody going to stay over Saturday night? I was thinking about it, but if most of you are leaving, I'm probably going to boogie too.

June 7, 2004, 11:40 AM
Ok……..we are getting close. I am excited. I have a bunch of random thoughts/questions I’ll lay out for you in this post. Right now it looks like me and BIL are a go for Friday night. However we may decide to just head up early Saturday morning. I say that because I don’t get off work until 6pm on Friday. We will stay over Saturday night for sure.

Does anyone plan on putting out some paper plates or signs to direct us in?

Can someone post the directions to the general area?

Does anybody else have motorolla (or similar radios)? I have the ones with channels and sub channels. I’ll propose Channel 7 Sub 28 as this is one that I use often. I’ll have those with me if anyone else wants to bring theirs. Other ideas are welcome.

Does anyone want to start compiling a list of cell phone numbers by PM? Everyone might not have coverage up there, so if we can have a list of phone numbers of those who are headed there. We might could guide in the “lost”.

I plan on bringing a table, chairs, various camping gear and plenty of ammo. I have a few cardboard cutouts for target backers. Also thinking about grabbing some clay pigeons. I don’t have a launcher, but they might make some good reactive targets.

Start thinking of your favorite shooting games. For example, here are a couple that we like to do. You and your opponent draw from concealment on command. Whoever is first to break the clay pigeon at 10 or 15 yards wins and moves on to the next opponent. Also we like to take a life sized cardboard cutout. When someone calls “draw”, you have to draw and shoot “two to the body one to the head”. This is timed and your shots must be placed correctly for a score. Anyways……….I am sure there are a million of them. I just thought things like this would be fun.

Bowling pins…………. If some of you have time, hit your local bowling allys and ask for some old pins. Might have to pay a little for them. I’ll visit a couple to see if I can get any.

There is still room for a couple of people in my Suburban if anyone wants to ride with us and donate a little for gas that would be great!

What else?

Oh and Wes. I think you are starting to feel sick. In fact by Saturday morning you will be way to sick to be at work.

June 7, 2004, 01:50 PM
Looks like I will be there Friday night. I'm going to ride up with skyder. Between the two of us we are having to coordinate on exactly how many guns each of us are allowed to bring so we don't overload his Jeep. :)

George Hill
June 7, 2004, 03:55 PM
I'll be heading out Friday night too.

June 7, 2004, 04:05 PM
Well, heck, I don't work FRiday either. Looks like I'll be heading up Friday. Corriea, when are you headingup? I'll follow you guys. Also, I can help you and Skyder tote up any WMD's you guys might have. Looks like it'll just be me in my car, so If someone wants to meet me somewhere I have no problem helping to carry camping gear, or guns.

Questions, with this being a shooting event, are we going to restrict alcohol? Or could I bring some beer? For the non-shooting entertainment.

Ben Shepherd
June 7, 2004, 04:05 PM
George, if my brother flakes out, can I get a ride off pavement? I'll shoot you a PM with a phone number to call me.

Lets try to hook up either way and leave a trail for the others.

How early are you going? I can be in the Heber area as early as you need on friday to meet up.

George Hill
June 7, 2004, 04:26 PM
Yeah, Ben, you could probably just park at the Ranger Station there at the entrance and ride in.
I'm not sure when I'll be coming in, and considering the Jeep, it might be an adventure just getting there... but you are more than welcome to ride with me any time.

I just got a box of samples of lube cleaner protectant... I wiped down my Cougar and put some in it. It's not bad... worth testing to the extreme. Tests see if this stuff can handle Utah back country.

June 7, 2004, 06:19 PM
Crude, we will be leaving from Midvale, probably between 2:00 and 3:00. Would that work?

On alchohol, personally I don't drink, but I don't get offended if anybody else wants to. Provided that they do it once all of the guns are put away and it is BS time around the campfire time. I do worry though when the guns are put away, the keg is tapped, and then somebody feels the need to show somebody else one of their guns. I know some folks who put a 10mm hole through their refridgerator that way. :)

June 7, 2004, 06:31 PM
2 or 3 would work perfect Larry. Shoot me a PM of where to meet up with you guys and I'll be there.

As far as the alcohol, that's what I was afraid of. We may need some sober people to be responsible DD's, Designated Deputies. To make sure no drunk people go near firearms. But i'll bring some beer if it's okay with everyone. And I hadn't thought of a keg, but we would be close to Wyoming... j/k.

June 7, 2004, 09:45 PM
Well, I'm too young to drink, and I don't drink anyway. I'm always available for a "designated safety officer" or whatnot... that is, if I can get my fat butt off work and up to Strawberry.

June 8, 2004, 05:16 AM
It seems very probable that Goet and I will be up there sometime friday morning probably around 10 or 11, depending on which scenic route we take. Will do some scouting around for shooting area. Im under the impression we will be shooting and camping in slighty two different areas.
the shooting area may not make the best camp site, and vice versa. Not sure if I want to wear my earplugs, when Im cooking the good stuff on the bbq. Will also keep an eye out for the white mustang Ben.

That's a good idea George. We should see if it's playing in a theatre up there, we can go as a group. I've been waiting for this movie since the first one came out, and I can not miss it.

I've got some FRS radios too, no sub channels, but I'll be on channel 7 as well.

12 Volt, it's a bit iffy for me. It's looking right now that if I'm off at all on Saturday, it probably won't be in time to get there before dark.

If I do get lucky though, I'll drive myself. Sorry to leave you hangin'.

Dammit, this pisses me off that I'm not going to be able to go. Just talked to Eric (PCRCCW) today and he's pretty sick. He says he's probably not going to make it either.

I just have a favor to ask -- will somebody with a digicam take lots of pictures?

June 9, 2004, 11:47 PM
I will be out on Strawberry/Soldier Creek on Sat (FREE FISHING DAY) and Sunday. I will keep the FRS on Ch 7 Code 28 if anyone wants to say hi. Also the main radio is always on Marine Ch 16 just call for "hjrocket" if you need water transport. I'll have a few pistols aboard and might get over to Renegade to pop some caps on Sunday. :)

No worries Wes. We will take plenty of pictures.

Do what you can to get there. :)

Wonder if Atc1man watched the weather before he headed to the desert?:D I'm bettin' he's a little wet right now. ;) That, and when it's wet that clay out there is UGLY.

We're going at noon :neener:
Hopefully its dried up a bit by then :uhoh:

Good for you. Short of an all-out white out style blizzard, if I've planned to go shooting I go. Glad to see some others are the same.

June 10, 2004, 11:30 AM
No worries Wes. We will take plenty of pictures.

Do what you can to get there.

Thanks. ;)

I'm going to try to... I woke up this morning sick as a dog, I kid you not. I can hardly speak and my head is pounding. I'm really not fit to work in a food establishment.

Now, it may not be moral or ethical, but if I can get out of this, I think I'm just going to have to pop up at strawberry. After all, I went and bought a $75 dollar dueling-tree so that we could have an extra game to play, and I intend to see it used. :D

Now my hesitation is that I'm afraid I'll get fellow THR brethren sick if I show up. :( That wouldn't be very good.

Wes, don't you dare deprive me of a legitimate reson to miss work.:D

Even if the weathers a little rough, I hope everyone still comes up. This is my ONLY weekend off this summer, I'm going up no matter what, and I'd sure like to meet a lot of you guys.

If anyone needs it I can bring an extra 2 man tent I have. If it comes down to it, just bring a sleeping bag, and you can put it up in my trailer(not enclosed, just an old pickup bed conversion).

June 10, 2004, 11:54 AM
Larry, I should be good on timing. The movie is at 11:30, and doubt it's 2.5 hours long. it's playing at Century 16, and then I'll head straight from there to your work. I got your directions and Skyders#. I'll give him a call when I'm on my way.

Wes, Ben's right, he needs more time off work. I feel it's your duty as a friend to come up this weekend, and sleep in the same tent as Ben, in order to make sure he gets sick and gets more days off work...:D

I can't wait. See you guys in 48 hours or less.

June 10, 2004, 12:14 PM
Hey guys. I may go if I can sneak away. I'm mostly coming to observe. I don't have a whole lot to shoot. I have an AR and a recently purchased Garand. Anywhere I can get some milsurp 30.06 in Utah before Saturday?

If I go, and you have anything that needs to be taken to Strawberry, I'd be happy to haul it. I'm also in Vernal.

June 10, 2004, 12:17 PM
Anywhere I can get some milsurp 30.06 in Utah before Saturday?

Check with Van Wagenens in Orem, Get Some in Sandy, and Patriot on Redwood and about 70th south.

June 10, 2004, 12:26 PM
Yeah, Norm(Vanwagnens) has plenty of '06 ammo.

Litefoot, don't worry if you don't have a lot to shoot, come out and hang out anyway. I'm going to be doing a lot of chrono work with a couple of my 44s and a 357, and a little bangin' with my SKS, but thats about it.

I'm staying from friday night until sunday evening, and planning on doing most of the triggertime on saturday. But mostly I'm using this to get a break, and hook up with fellow THR members.

June 10, 2004, 12:32 PM
Just got off the phone with VW and he is out of milsurp 30.06. Atc1man, do have a number for the folks in Sandy? Is the name of the shop "Patriot"?
Just a little unclear on your last message. Thanks!

As you might imagine, Mr. Personality at VW (I think you all know who I'm talking about) was remiss to volunteer info on other sources in the area.

June 10, 2004, 12:42 PM
Patriot Arms is the shop on Redwood about 70th South. (801) 253-0175
Get Some is pretty new, 72nd south and 7th west.
(801) 562-1222

You might check Gallensons, too. Salt Lake City downtown.
(801) 328-2016

I got a chance to check out 'Get Some'. Nice guys and a good shop. It looks like they are more into the assault rifles and handguns. More of a defense shop. I think they had maybe a dozen hunting rifles and shotguns, the rest was AR-15's, SKS's, and AK's. I was in heaven. I want to go back first chance I get and give a better introduction. (they look new, I wonder if they're hiring? that'd be sweet).

June 10, 2004, 01:27 PM
Get Some are pretty cool guys. Diann over at Tight Group (across Redwood from Patriot in the little complex behind the Chinese restaurant) is where I usually go though.

June 10, 2004, 01:33 PM
Litefoot, yeah, I have the lubricant samples I want you guys to try out.
If you go, send me a PM with your address and I'll drop it off to you.

June 10, 2004, 03:45 PM
"Get Some," just west of Sportsman's on 7200 has lots of good milsurp ammo, and "Tight Group" is another awesome store that has plenty of the same. The people at both places are awesome.

Alright, Ben... I may just have to come up. :D My boss isn't answering her phone :scrutiny: but I'm working on getting the time off. I sure need to see you guys!

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Correia and I just went to lunch, here's what we're up to:

We are going to leave 90th south Sandy at 2:00 pm tomorrow. We'll leave you a trail of some sort. If for some reason that doesn't work out I'll definately give the ranger station a heads up. So unless they are unwilling to help(very unlikely), just ask them which way we went. :D

Seriously guys, even if you don't have much ammo or somewhere to sleep come up. I can put at least 4 people(six if needed) in a decent spot to sleep as long as you can supply your own sleeping bag. Even if you're not shooting much come up and hang out awhile. (We need some good group pictures, so come up and get a good mugshot.)

June 10, 2004, 04:42 PM
Ahh... Betos. I love Betos. Where else can they slap a whole roast on a tortilla, call it a burrito and only charge you $3.00? :D

skyder and I will be leaving from my job at 2:00. Ben and Crude are going to follow us. Convoy up!

:D Larry, you're my kinda guy. ;) They've got some goooood stuff.

You know what? We need to make some sort of Utah "registry" of good and decent gun shops that are worth supporting. Maybe a nighttime project for the campout?

June 10, 2004, 05:20 PM
We'll probably be up there Fri at around Noon.

I'll have channel 7:0 on.

Allright. Now I am jealous of you guys that get to head up tomorrow afternoon.
It will be bright and early Sat morning for us.

edited to add. This was my 500th post. :D
I joined this forum on December 30th, 2002. It took me a while to reach 500.

In case any of you guys wondered where Mr. Murphy was today:

He was with me all:cuss: :cuss: :cuss: day!!! Good crud!!!! :fire:

So....... I'll see you all this weekend, I'll unwind a bit, and we'll all have a good time.

Edit: just talked to a guy that just got back from that area, there's a good amount of snow. So dress pretty warm and come up anyway!!!! A couple of us have chains and ropes if you get stuck, and if it's needed we can piggyback you up from the ranger station.

June 10, 2004, 09:04 PM
Crude and I had a damn good time shooting today. I took some pics and will post them soon.
Yes, we got rained on...and hailed on...but otherwise it was very nice out.

Wonderful news. :fire:

Instead of coming in early in the morning, my boss had decided to make me come in at NOON and work for the rest of the f#@%ing day. :banghead: :fire:

I can't f@%&ing win.

I'm totally bummed, too -- at work, we just found a case of old Diet Coke dated from 2002 that needs to be thrown out... so I put them in my car so that we could shoot them.

Ain't gonna happen now. :cuss:

12 Volt, will you save a sample of that CLP product for me?

Sorry guys. I think I'm gonna go have a conniption now.

June 14, 2004, 11:05 PM
Well....anyone got a report or pictures?

June 15, 2004, 12:32 AM
