I have a Ruger that I bought second hand a short time ago. I just looked at it in a very bright light and the bluing on the reciever has a violet tint in the bluing. Does this mean the rifle was overheated at one time? Is the rifle safe to shoot or should it be looked at by a gunsmith before using. If it matters it is a 7mmMag.

Its actually quite typical of earlier ruger products to to turn a "plum" color with age. Some hate it but its kind of a beauty mark to us ruger fans. Especially when paired with a vintage leupold scope that shares the same coloration

I have a #1 and the receiver is that plum color. Looks nice. I have heard, but do not know for a fact, that its just a combination of Rugers metal and the bluing method they use.

Some Finnish M39 Mosin Nagants with barrels made in Belgium are a nice plum color. I've seen it said that its due to the nickel content in the metal.

It is quite typical of U.S. M1903 Springfield's that have been sporterized & hot blued too.

The nickel steel used in them is subject to turning purple if the temperature of the hot salts bluing bath is off just a few degrees.

It's nothing at all to worry about, as it has no bearing at all on the strength of the action.
