I just received some gift cards and am thinking now would be a good time to get a chrono as I have a firm understanding of reloading and am ready to go to the next level with my development what are your thoughts on the shooting chrony beta master

I have had three Chronys over the years, two expired from "lead poisoning". I still have the third but do not use it much any more as I prefer my CED M2's features better.

The Chronys always worked fine for me.

Like any chronograph, Chronys can be finicky when it comes to sensing the bullet, but the Chrony manual has some good trouble shooting aids. Things like sun position, sky condition, ground reflectivity, bullet size, muzzle blast, and more all can effect the reliability of the unit seeing the bullet.

Also, I would disconnect the battery when not in use and would keep a fresh battery on hand.

Wood dowels make suitable replacements for the metal rods that support the screen diffusers.

Take your time when shooting over the Chrony and remember the barrel/sight offset particularly with rifles. If you rush, you will shoot out your Chrony.

I have a Beta Master and use it all the time. It works very well so long as you learn its limitations and what it likes. A good habit initially is to set it up and shoot some 22LR over it to be sure it is happy with the lighting conditions.

I really like the remote control head. In a controlled range situation, not having to go out to the sensing unit is invaluable. The 6 ten shot strings and built in statistical calculations are nice, but I record everything in a notebook and transfer it to an excel spreadsheet and it calculates the same things. If it made any difference, I would have been just as happy with the Alpha Master, but the Beta Master was on sale and with my Midway discount, it was the same price.

The sticks for the skyscreens is a good idea. I do that also. If I did metal work, I would bend some sheet metal to make an angled deflector mount to reduce the chance of sensor destruction <when> I accidentally shoot it.

I have been using a PACT Model 1 XP (http://pact.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=69) for about 4 years now and I'm happy with it. It's a basic unit without any special features. What I really like about it is only the sensors are in harms way and the Chrono itself sits on the bench safe next to you. If you shoot the sensors they can be replaced for only $15 each, $27.50 for a pair. (don't ask how I know!)

I've had a Chrony for a long time and just dealt with the common foibles of optical chronographs. Recently, though, I bought a Magnetospeed and really like it. It doesn't miss a shot. It's only lacking is it won't work on most autoloaders or really short revolvers.

The chrony beta master is a good choice, especially since you can't buy any primers or bullets right now !!!

Be aware that a lot of ranges won't let you use them. You almost need to be an outdoor shooter to use one, but they will improve your loads.

I do only shoot outdoors as there is not an abundance of indoor rages if any where I live

Krogen - does the magnetospeed work with cast?

Yes, the magnetospeed likes cast just fine. It will pick up 22 LR too. The book discusses how to tweak its settings if need be. Haven't had to do that yet.

Rfwobbly noted that some ranges don't allow chronographs. Presumably that's because the screens go down range and there's usually a fair amount of fiddling the get them located. Also, fluorescent lights can fool optical screens. Since the magnetospeed mounts to the gun and isn't optical, it may be workable at these ranges.
