Qualifications:
1.This chart is approximate and useful only for comparison. I gathered it from many sources and did not bother to triple check. When you find errors I will repent in dust and ashes.
2.I didn’t include several cartridges you all might have: 35 Rem, any 375’s, and no WSMs (dust and ashes begun!). I know, I know .30-06 is not a med bore, but it was easily had info and since I had it for 200 gr and that was fairly common I included it.
3.The chart is cut in because there seems to be an obvious division based on recoil.
4.A couple of things would make this chart much better. Adding other cartridges in the med bore range. Using as the representative weight whatever it is that cartridge shoots ‘best’ (i.e. 130gr for 270 win and 168 gr for the .30-06). How much actual energy there is at the MPBR? Actually verifying that this isn’t just ‘representative’ but actual info.
5.I actually am not in the market for these nor do I own any of them (except the .30-06). But some day I do wish to own a med bore.

Cartridge Bullet Weight Muzz Vel Muzzle energy Recoil MPBR
.338 Marlin Express 200 2565 2922 16.2 254

.35 Whelen 200gr SP 2798 3478 27.9 254
9.3x62mm Mauser 231 gr Oryx 2600 3550 28.0 247
350 Rem Mag 200 3008 4019 29.0 246
358 Norma 250 2756 4217 31.2 274
.338 Win Mag 200gr SP 2950 3866 36.5 268
*Listed as ‘Sensible Rifle Cartridges’ by Chuck Hawks. See his page for explanation.

Observations:
I was amazed at how clearly these two grouped even though they are different size wise. Also amazed at how close the MPBR on these were.
It seems to me that the wisdom often given on THR is going to prove correct again: pick the rifle then the cartridge.

I'm sorry the chart didn't come out very clearly: I just tried to correct it again and it went back to this. Hopefully you can make it out.
