Tovarisch!

I was told that a barrel could be made on a lathe. This includes both reaming out the round stock and then rifling it. Well, Howard Hoffman wrote a book on the subject and I found it online. Here's the link:

In case the link doesn't work, here's another:

I love this old school stuff but Aye-gawd! When I got to the "rifling machine" it made me want to run to the comfort of my barrel blank manufacturer's catalogs.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks for sharing the article. It is good to know the fundamentals of how our tools and rifles are made.

OK I read this last night (skimmed over a couple parts). The problem with this is even though I can understand the concepts, the application of them is WAY the hell over my head.

Interesting, from a "how to" perspective, but I don't see myself cranking out barrels any time soon.

Well...

That looks like a lot of work...
You could just go here instead...

Yea, but what fun is that?

It never fails to amaze me just how many folks will pipe up with something like just go buy this, so much easier.

Rather than actually try something hard just because they want to either learn or be able to say 'I made that!'.
