The term "assault weapon" makes a gun seem more ominous than it is. Automatic Arms is a much better name, only my opinion. And seeing how the first English patent was applied for in 1718 the naysayers don't have much of a leg to stand on with the whole "Constitution" argument and what our Fore Fathers had in mind. Multifiring systems were first thought of in the 14th century and will never go away. Thank God. That's a no for me on banning any weapon.

Just voted no. Still over 98% no. Yay.

The spread in favor of no may be in part because US News tends to be a bit to the right of center on political issues (certainly compared to Time & Newsweek anyway).

While I was there, I saw another interesting US News discussion called "Debate Club - Did the Sandy Hook Shooting Prove the Need for More Gun Control? (http://www.usnews.com/debate-club/did-the-sandy-hook-shooting-prove-the-need-for-more-gun-control)"

In this feature, three experts took the "yes" side and three took the "no" side. As rated by the readers, the "no" side debaters placed 1-2-3; the only "yes" debater to get more favorable than unfavorable votes placed 4th. I've not had time to read the positions yet as I just saw the summary myself.

These polls should be taken with a grain of salt... You can easily falsifying votes by clearing your cookies and refreshing the page. I believe java wizards have a way of making it vote extremely quickly and automatically, as well.

Here's the problem... US News & World Report is considered a "right-wing rag" among the Establishment Media Crowd and their followers, viewed about the same as how Cold War anti-Communists viewed Pravda.

BUT, we're still up by a near shut-out, 98.19%-1.81%. And the Ivory Tower Club will sniff about "self-selecting sample, bad statistics, doesn't count" while pointing to their OWN pubs' just-as-skewed-the-other-way numbers from a JUST AS self-selecting sample of their fellow travelers and claiming "a mandate".

It won't make any difference.
Unfortunate truth you speak. It is beginning tomorrow from the looks of it. Not sure I want to look at the news tomorrow or not. It won't be pretty no matter what it is.
