At what barrel length does a typical 2-3/4" 12GA load reach it's peak velocity? By "typical" I mean standard power loads like those consisting of 9 pellets of 00 buck advertised at 1300 fps, or 1-1/4 oz of birdshot at 1200 fps, etc. I've heard it's alot less than the legal minimum barrel length of 18", at least with modern smokeless powders; more like 12". Is that more or less correct?

Roughly anywhere from 9"-11", but there can be small gains of 100-150fps with slightly longer barrels.

I have a mossy 590 14" aow, it seems to pattern the same as my old 18" pump at about 10 yards, but I would imagine that pattern spreads a bit more with the shorter barrel past 10 yards.
