How can I tell if a nef frame is a sb1 or sb2. It is "case hardned" and of recent manufacture. I tried calling them today and all circuits were busy.

I would think that they would mark their frames, but I cannot find any markings to indicate what it is.

I think the "case "hardened" recievers are shotgun frames, don't quote me on that though.

Just try them another call, I have found them very nice and helpful.

Thank you. I tried calling NEF today, but all circuits were busy. I read somewhere where they moved from Mass. to NC.

PB Walsh's link shows the best way to determine whether it's and SB1 or SB2 frame. Other than the Buffalo Classic, I don't believe they have done many CCH coloured (and they are only colored, not actually hardened) in recent years. In fact, I believe that the last of the case hardened ductile iron frames were with the 158 Topper pre-1987.

H&R 1871 (the successors to NEF and Harrington & Richardson) is now a brand owned by Remington and is manufactured at their Ilion NY plant. For further info on Handi Rifles, the best source is the H&R forum on GBO:

My grandfather bestowed upon me a gorgeous little .410 youth when i was six or seven. It has the case hardening color, that was about 1999 or 2000. So they do make them, and quite nicely I will add.

Does anyone know what size the stock bolt is so I can remove it? My son has all kinds of "automotive" tools.

To remove the stock, remove the butt pad/plate, the bolt has a 9/16"(14mm) hex head, you'll need a long extension for your ratchet to reach it.

Pre 1987 stock bolts may vary in size from the 9/16" norm.

Not all stock bolts are the same length so when changing stocks beware that an overlong bolt will damage the trigger mechanism.

Thanks for the info. I learned long ago it helps to have the right tools.
