Kimber Compact CDP question

I have a Compact CDP (Series I) with a "captive" recoil spring system that is the only thing I dislike about the pistol. Does anyone know of a reliable non-captive recoil spring/guide rod system that I could replace my system with? Is there any gunsmithing necessary to change to the non-captive recoil kslystem? Please explain.
