Can anyone explain this?

This is a case I picked up at the range a while back and tossed it in the scrap bin. Some sooting discussions here made me think about it. I can't quite explain what would cause this to happen. Anyone ever seen this before? Low pressure and gas in the chamber maybe, but why the lines that appear all the way around the case?

It was fired in a fluted chamber....probably semi auto also from the mouth distortion.

Fired from one of the rollar locked rifles that have a fluted chamber to allow extraction.
HK91 or CETME type rifle.

Yeah, a fluted chamber like that used I believe on the HK 91, other HK rifles and several others. It is pretty common to find cases that look like that on ranges. Also, as mentioned the dented case mouth pretty much says a semi-automatic rifle. On ejection the cases spin out and bang into the receiver causing the dent.

What rifle uses a fluted chamber and for what reason? Reliability? This is news to me! I love learning new things.

Also, I assume this is not reason to discard any such brass based on this condition alone?

No, iron the case mouth out with a tapered punch and reload as normal.
They just look funky is all.

I have a bunch of 9mm brass that was fired through an MP5, and has the same striations. No problems loading it.
I have some .308 brass from an HK91 as well, but haven't tried loading it yet. I don't anticipate any problems, unless the case mouth is dented beyond repair.

Used to have a hk-91. While you can reload the brass, you may wanrt to be careful about the headspace, especially if using the brass for different rifle. The way the action works can cause growth in the headspace measurement, far beyond a normal gas or bolt action. I had to resize the cases twice, to set back the shoulder to spec.
The flutes ironed out, but reduced case life.

I picked up a few 9MM brass with those marks from a fluted chamber today.

Brass out of my CETME looks the same. Reloads just fine.
