An attempted home invasion ends with a deadly shooting. The man who pulled the trigger is 73 years old. He was armed and ready after being targeted last week.

On Thursday, he heard a noise coming from downstairs. He knew something was not right, so he grabbed his gun to see what was going on and he encountered a stranger he believed was one of the men who tried to rob him before.
Police tell us the bad guy had kicked in the front door and walked in but the man of the house was right there and opened fire. One shot to the chest. The suspect ran out of the house and collapsed in the driveway of the home next door, where he died.

Dallas police said the woman was home alone when she heard a noise -- two men had kicked in the front door of her house. She confronted the two men as they reached the second-floor landing and shot at them several times, police said.
Investigators said a gun recovered at the home indicates that at least one of the intruders was armed.
Charles Brown, the father of the 22-year-old woman who fired the shots, said he is proud of his daughter. "Yeah, it is -- it's puffed out because I'm real proud of her because I taught her that," he said. "I taught my girls that -- to defend themselves when someone come to hurt them, and apparently she listened."
Brown said their home has been broken into once before.
"I'm feeling real disgusted about this neighborhood at this moment, that a man can't go to work and make an honest day's living without some thug breaking into his house," he said. Because his daughter works at night and sleeps during the day, he left the gun by her pillow, just like he does every day, Brown said.

Thank you. Sadly, home owners being victimized and killed by intruders far outnumber the incidents where home owners successfully defend their lives.
After much contemplation of recent events, I thought it was constructive to illustrate the need for self-defense by home owners and CCW.

The intruder broke a sliding glass door to enter their home ... the couple hid locked themselves in a bedroom and spoke with a 911 operator, the intruder continued to threaten them. According to West, the intruder was yelling, "Where are you at? I'm going to kill you."
The man who lived inside of the home retrieved his handgun, according to officials. He told the intruder he had a gun and to get out of his house. After the intruder kept threatening the homeowner, he knocked the bedroom door down, and the homeowner fired at the intruder, said West. When deputies arrived at the scene they found the intruder’s body outside of the bedroom.
West said the incident was a clear case of self-defense. "The resident showed quite a bit of restraint. He continued to yell at the suspect to leave the house and said he was armed. The couple even locked themselves in a room to try to avoid a confrontation. They had no way of knowing if the suspect was armed. The resident was clearly forced to shoot to defend himself and his girlfriend."
“It’s your worst nightmare,” said Eric Nelsen, who lived close to the house. “Some totally random person coming in your house and attacking you.” According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was not known to the couple living at the home or to the woman at the home on Southeast 5th Avenue.

a masked and gloved gunman later identified as convicted drug felon Michael Martin knocked on the door of the apartment that Michael Moffitt shares with his girlfriend. Moffitt directed his girlfriend to the bedroom and told her to call police.
Moffitt, who is a firearms enthusiast and had legal weapons in the apartment, retrieved an AR-15 rifle and again checked the peephole. Seeing that it was no longer covered, Moffitt opened the door. Police said at that point, Martin, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, forced his way in and shoved Moffitt hard into an interior wall.
Moffitt opened fire on Martin, 35, with the rifle, fatally wounding him.
A second man wearing a ski mask was seen on the backside of the apartment building. Police said he fled the area after hearing the gunshots ... detectives theorize that Martin may have come to the apartment as part of a plot to rob Moffitt of his firearms.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Moffitt fired on Martin in self-defense and no charges were filed. Martin was convicted of six felony drug counts last November and received a seven-year probated sentence, police said.

Well there are certainly a lot of stories over just a few days!
No doubt there are lots of incidences that occur every day where no shots are fired and no one is injured so there are no police reports or news stories to document the incidence.
Long ago when I lived in Houston TX I remember reading in the old Houston Post newspaper a story where a home owner was awaken at 0 dark 30 one morning by what he thought was someone trying to break into his house through a window. He fired at the sound but when he looked afterwards he did not see anyone. He thought he had made a mistake to he did not call the police.
That morning when he went out to go to work he found the dead body of a woman, wearing a stocking mask and armed with a handgun, lying in shallow ditch between his house and his neighbor's. He had been right after all!.
I have no doubt that the number of times people frighten off criminals without firing a shot is many many more times than when the actually pull the trigger.

Prosecutor ... charged Christopher Rhodes, 20, with Residential Burglary for the June 19, 2012, home invasion burglary of a Tacoma area residence.
The homeowner shot the defendant as he entered the home through a broken window.
“The defendant was caught in the act and lawfully shot,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “Now, he’s going to be held accountable for the burglary. This case is another reminder that breaking into people’s homes can land you in the hospital or prison, if you aren’t killed.”
On June 19, the victim was home alone when he heard knocking at his back door ... the victim heard noises from the defendant prying open a window. The victim armed himself with a shotgun and called 911. The defendant smashed a bay window with an unknown object and was entering the home when the victim fired one shot. The defendant ran to a neighboring home and ... collapsed.
At the time of the alleged burglary, the defendant was in possession of a cell phone with an application that allowed him to monitor police radio broadcasts. One of the witnesses heard dispatch communications coming from the phone.
An inspection of the victim’s home revealed a spent shell casing on the floor near the broken bay window and holes in the curtain covering the window, consistent with a shotgun blast fired from inside the home. The victim told police that the defendant’s torso was inside his house when he fired the shot.

Mom who shot intruder inspires gun control foes - http://news.yahoo.com/mom-shot-intruder-inspires-gun-control-foes-003753089.html
A Georgia mother who shot an intruder at her home has become a small part of the roaring gun control debate, with some firearms enthusiasts touting her as a textbook example of responsible gun ownership.
Melinda Herman grabbed a handgun and hid in a crawl space with her two children when a man broke in last week and approached the family at their home northeast of Atlanta, police said. Herman called her husband on the phone, and with him reminding her of the lessons she recently learned at a shooting range, Herman opened fire, seriously wounding the burglary suspect.
The National Rifle Association tweeted a link to a news story (https://twitter.com/NRA/status/287392388400439298) about the shooting, and support poured in from others online, hailing Herman as a hero. The local sheriff said he was proud of the way she handled the situation.
"This lady decided that she wasn't going to be a victim, and I think everyone else looks at this and hopes they have the courage to do what she done," Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said Wednesday.
Herman ... saw a man walk up to the front door ... rang the doorbell twice and then over and over again ... Herman took her 9-year-old son and daughter into an upstairs bedroom and locked the door. They went into bathroom and she locked that door, too. She got her handgun from a safe, the report said, and hid with her children. At some point, she called her husband, who kept her on the line and called 911 on another line.
In a 10-minute 911 recording released by the Walton County Sheriff's Office, Donnie Herman calmly explained what was happening to a dispatcher ...
"Is he in the house, Melinda? Are you sure? How do you know? You can hear him in the house?" Donnie Herman said.
His wife told him the intruder was coming closer.
"He's in the bedroom? Shh, shh, relax. Just remember everything that I showed you, everything that I taught you, all right?" Donnie Herman told his wife, explaining later to the dispatcher that he had recently taken her to a gun range.
Melinda Herman told police she started shooting the man when he opened the door to the crawl space.
