I've found the cause:

We started feeling the strain when demand was 4,000 users online at a time, and tonight we set a new record of 16% more users online than ever before, and 28% more than we were seeing last week when things started to slow down.

No wonder I had trouble determining what effect my performance tweaks were having.

So if THR is being slow, please be understanding. I'm working on it diligently, but I'm going to stop turning dials, flipping switches, and kicking hardware until the morning.

We can't help that it's slow tonight, but we'll work hard to make sure it's faster tomorrow.
