shot size for hunting

I have a young friend who is interested in varmint hunting, out to 50 yards, and up to coyotes. He has a Remington pump, 12 ga., full choke, and was talking about #4 shot for coyote. I was thinking that sounded a little light but I am a target shooter, not a hunter.
What is a responsible choice of load for a shot at a coyote up to 50 yards?

I would use #2 or BB lead, if I had to use a shotgun.

These are probably even better. T size Hevi Shot®.

IF you are trying to salvage the pelts for sale, I wouldn't use a shotgun - too many holes to patch. If you are just trying to eradicate them, I agree with RC - bigger is better

Is he talking about #4 shot, as in 0.130" in diameter or No. 4 buckshot, which is 0.240" in diameter? #4 birdshot wouldn't work too well at 50 yards, but I think No. 4 buckshot would work great.

I agree with rc on this one as well.

I've seen T shot used on a coyote before. It is downright devistating.

I had a friend when I lived in ND a few decades back who used a TC Contender in .223 to anchor coyotes on the farm he was renting. made enough in one winter when pelts were $55 each to buy several guns from me as I had the FFL at the time

#4 buck or BB will do just fine. My Son just killed a yote the other day with #4 buck from 30 or so yards.

T-shot, F-shot, BB, buckshot #4 will all do the job well in 3" 12ga. 12ga. 2.75" would work on ranges of 35yds. I would certainly use full or X-full chokes if using no. 4 lead shot or better #2 turkey loads. Outside of 50yd. range .223, .22-250, .243 or 6mm would work nicely.

I grew up in Kansas and killed many a coyote with .22LR especially at 50 yds.

When I was growing up in the 50-60s, I don't remember having 3" or certainly not 3.5" 12ga. shells or shotguns chambered for such. We shot ducks, geese, turkeys, pheasant, quail, doves, pigeons, prairie chickens, squirrels and rabbits with regular 2.75" chambered shotguns. Maybe 3" were around but I don't recall that.

One of my Dad's friends had either a Mossberg or Marlin 12ga. "Long Tom".
It was still 2.75" but had a 36" bbl and was I believe bolt action. It was useful at mid-morning when the prairie chickens had already been shot at and were flying way up there.

Coyotes were always with rifles--they were too skittish to get very close.

I just bought a box of ten Remington Ultimate Home Defense shotgun shells. They're duplex heavy shot (tungsten iron) # 4 x # 2. I bought them for predators. Cannot imagine a coyote hit well within 50 yards with that load doing much but dropping dead.
