I *think* they now make a double-stack version, but stay away from the neutered single-stack WASR-10, especially if it's one you are ordering sight unseen.

I have a SAR-1 in 7.62x39 and I love it. It's a blast to shoot. I don't have any experience with the wasr-10, but if it's double stack, it should do just fine. I like the look of hte wood vs. the syn stock myself :) But to each his own. Enjoy the rifle man!

I have one of each (SAR-1 and the double-stack WASR). Both shoot just fine - if anything, the WASR is slightly more accurate than the SAR-1.

I have the SAR 1 & two friends have WASR 10 hi- cap models. I prefer the SAR for cosmetic reasons (has dimples) above the mag well. The mags on their WASR rifles have more side to side play than my SAR. All have been reliable & fun to shoot. The WASR rifles cost them $50 less than my SAR.

go for sar1.
saw some adds in shotgun news for under $300.
the wasr10's are single stack some of them had the mag well milled out to accept double stack magazines. the mill job is not always good.

I've been playing with a digital camera this week, so I thought I'd post a pic of my SAR-1. It was too large of a file, so I had to crop it a little mhttp://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=849212

if you want the standard capacity mag version make sure it takes double stack mags.there are the 10 round mag ak varient that accepts a 30 rnd look alike single stack mag that has a capacity of 10.there is also the single stack varients modified to accept standard double stack mags.some of the sar1s had some parts fit problems(some cosmetic and some functional)..unsure about the other ones.

I own a WASR-10 that has been legally converted to take standard-capacity double-stack AK mags. It functions beautifully and I reallly like it, but there is one minor problem. I was at the range with OEF_VET and his SAR-1 and discovered that the conversion was close-but-not-perfect. That is, some mags don't quite fit my WASR-10 and when we compared the cutout for the mag well the SAR-1's was ever so slightly wider towards the front. This can be fixed with some precision dremel work, but in the short-term I have 6 mags and can only use 4 of them. The other 2 don't fit, but they fit just fine in OEF_VET's SAR-1.
The other problem both tend to have is the infamous trigger-slap. I'll be putting in a Tapco G2 FCG to fix that problem on mine.
You can read all about the Romanian AK variants here. (http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml)

I have both. The finish on both the wood and metal on the WASR 10 is better and the accuracy is better. I've had no trouble with the mag conversion on mine and most of my mags fit snug. Those that dont are not any worse than the ones in my SAR. My WASR didnt have any trigger slap either, I had to replace the trigger on my SAR as I couldnt file it out. Heres a pic of the two side by side. The SAR is the painted one. If you look close just below the ejection port, you can see the dimple. The WASR doesnt have one. Thats really the only difference you can see, and thats really only if your looking for it.

I have a WSAR-10 that accepts double stack mags. Have only put about 250 rounds through it and have had some jamming problems but I'm not sure if its the mag or not. Picked it up at a local show here for around $280. Fairly accurate out to about 75 yards.
YMMV

I have a SAR-1 and like it a lot. I can't speak to the WSAR-10, never saw one and do not know anyone personally who has one. My SAR-1 is fairly accurate and a hoot to shoot! Only problem is a bit of trigger slap which I need to fix.
You could probably get whichever is least expensive (as long as the WSAR-10 will accept hi-caps) and be happy.
