I have a Ruger M77 first model in 6mm Rem that I just don't shoot much, and I've been thinking about re-barreling it to 308. Does the M77 have off-the-wall threads, or might it be possible to find a take-off either from another M77 or a similar-threaded action? I'm thinking a medium-heavy sporter, 24"... but - just ruminating...

Certainly you could use a Ruger takeoff. I don't know how closely their threads and headspace are justified so there might or might not be a good deal of refitting required.
I don't know of a "similarly threaded action". There is not much interchangeability in the firearms world.
Also consider that a "first model" Ruger in an uncommon caliber might be worth enough to trade for a .308 rifle. I have a .22-250 that might go the same way.

IMO keep the 6mmRemMag and get a new Ruger American. Fantastic rifle for 400 dollars and would cost about the same as a conversion and you get 2 rifles.
