Any of you folks have one of these .308 Garands from the CMP. How do they shoot/look? I'm considering getting me one because one Garand is not enough.

They look like a Garand. How they shoot depends on the individual shooter.....chris3

Are you talking about the special grade .308?

I have a special grade .30-06 and it basically looks like a new rifle. Mine gets about 2 MOA prone on a good day.

It will basically behave like a GI issue M1, except the parts are re-parked and some are well worn under the new parkerizing.

I had the trigger on mine redone, I got some match sights that I can swap in and out, and I finished the stock. I also had my gunsmith go over it and he cleared out some areas of the stock and stock metal that were rubbing on the oprod.

It is a great rifle for a shooter...no real collector value, but who cares?

I like .30-06, but I reload so there isn't a real benefit to .308 for me. If you don't reload, then being able to shoot .308 surplus is a plus. There is an argument about accuracy, but that is probably based on the quality of issued ammunition at matches back in the day. I don't think that accuracy with CMP special grades with good handloads would be much different between .308 and .30-06 since you are only looking at around 2MOA anyway.

I have both the 30-06 Special grade and the 308 Winchester Special grade but have not shot the 308W yet. They are about as close to a new M1 Garand as you can get these days with new production barrels and stocks and refinished other parts.

My 30-06 version is a great shooter and I expect the same from the 308 Winchester one.

Even though the CMP 308 Winchester Special is not an "official" arsenal rebuild, the 308 Winchester version was a version requested by the Navy. So, I figured it would be an ok addition to my collection that I would not mind shooting alot.

Of course, somewhere down the road, the CMP Specials may be collectable in their own right but probably long after I'm pushing up daisies.:)
