"Obsolete" analogy graphic, needs some tweaking, though. (Oleg?)

Blackrazor's "not getting it" 1911 thread made me think of this. He may never "get it", and ignorance is bliss as far as that goes. But people are quite ready to dismiss things as obsolete, even though they still work perfectly well for their intended purposes, sometimes better than their intended replacements. Case in point, witness this recent-manufacture high-end stereo amplifier, with a pair of 1911 variants warming up next to the vacuum tubes.

"Obsolete is but a state of mind" was my first choice for a caption. "Loud and clear, 100 years drawing near" was another. I'll let you guys run with it, maybe there's a better way to compose the picture, too.

Looks weird with the magwells pointed up.

Curiosity has got the best of me, what rear sight is that on the right one? And is that a Wilson?

I think there's about a dozen or so of those rear sights in the U.S. before Dirty Dick Bancroft's disability forced him to quit milling them out of barstock for good. He didn't like the dark sight picture that the Novaks gave, so he started with a clean sheet of paper. Note the wide-open area in front of the rear notch. If you ever find any of his guns or sights for sale, you'll know it, they carry a D/D stamp somewhere. He built the Caspian Officer's ACP that his trademark rear sight is attached to. Here's a different view:

I wanted to stand both 1911 variants up on the amplifier's flat deck, or prop them up in front, resting on their mag bases and muzzles. I tried it, but they masked either the amplifier controls or vacuum tubes. Composition is everything, and I know nothing about it to begin with. :(

When I asked if it was a wilson, I was reffering to the pistol, the barrel just made me wonder. I've only seen that setup in the wilson catolouge.

Note the wide-open area in front of the rear notch. Thats why I was wondering about the sight... Just a dozen or so? Damn...

Gewher:

What does your air conditioning bill run in July when you have both those valve amps cranked up?

I still prefer transistors . . . but my hearing has deteriorated enough that I could probably hear an old crank Victrola just as well.

A bit off topic, but I do still prefer LP's over CD's. Even my worn out ears can tell the difference.

The tubes do generate some extra heat, but it's well worth it, and my wife probably generates more Infra-Red than anything else in the house. I prefer LP's to CD's, too, especially through a tube amp. But I'm in the process of adding more heat, my turntable moving-magnet cartridge preamp is a cheapy IC unit, and I'm building a tube replacement. That, and in a stroke of financial silliness, my next CD player will add to the air-conditioning bill. Obsolete? I think not: :D

Gewehr, may I respectfully suggest that you resize your photographs so that they fit on a standard screen? That one at the top is so big that I have to scroll waaayy sideways to view it. For convenience, I resized it to 640x480 below.

I forget about our dial-up and small-screen patrons, that's somewhat discriminatory on my part. :(

I won’t be hunting down any tube driven electronics, but my selfwinding watches are doing just fine, thank you!

Composition tip .
Set the pistols on the table on the sides of the front tubes magwell down . Stick a black pen the the trigger guards to give it a tripod effect , and let the muzzle rest on the amp .

Ya gotta love tubes . Well if you play guitar at least .:0

Self-winding watches, pocket knives, Zippo or other liquid-fueled lighters (dunno when they first came out...), all durable goods that have withstood the test of time over the last 100 years. Now I'm thinking past the vacuum tubes, perhaps a collage?

a fountain pen, a regular yellow #2 pencil, and perhaps a gold coin.

My caption would be "Because they work, that's why!"

Gewehr98,

Without a doubt you are an interesting character. :) Both your guns and stereo are unique collections. Don't suppose you're into motorcycles, are you? ;) Nice rig, good point.

G-98 How about posing the Pistols, upright, on top of the transformers?
Using an straight on angle , like the photo you used on the other thread.
You could frame the pistols as sort of an "arch" over the top.

Also, if that Shanling uses 12AX7s, track down some Telefunken ECC-83s and try them instead. Your ears will love you.

Just my tuppence.

Nope, not at all. Well, maybe one or two... :D

I am working on something that will hold the 1911's on or near the transformers, without letting them come crashing down on top of the tubes. Stay tuned...

BluesBear, the Shanling is something down the road, maybe after my tax refund. It will have to lobby aggressively for the refund, as will a Henry Big Boy in .44 Magnum, or a new Winchester 94 Classic Octagon Barrel, better tires for my truck, etc. First thing I *would* do if the Shanking came home with me is get rid of those silly tube guards. ;)
