BP 12ga Experiment

I am by no means saying this is safe. I wanted to share the experience.

I was loading BP (Pyrodex) #8 shot for my old Ithaca double barrel the other day and ran out of fiber wads with one primed shell left. I was looking around the kitchen and saw a 18" long black, red, and gold ribbon that germandeli.com puts in there shipping boxes (the wife is German and it is very hard to find leberkase in Trinidad, Co). So, I was wondering if I could shoot a flag out of a 12 ga.

I loaded 50gr by volume, a thick over powder wad that fit tight for good compression and ran a thin bead of super glue. Then I super glued the end of the ribbon to a .495 round ball, rolled the ribbon up and tucked it into the case next to the ball.

A Friend of mine and I went down to the Whittington Center today to shoot at the pistol sillohette range. We were the only people shooting at the entire complex, sustained winds at 40mph and gusts that nearly knocked us over. When we got ready to go, I pointed the old coach gun at the berm and pulled the trigger.

The ball blasted down range and actually knocked a pig down. The ribbon also shot out and streamed perfectly until coming to a stop about half way to the targets. I didn't think it would work and I know there are no uses for it, I just thought it was neat and wanted to share.

Another neat thing that was observed; at 25 yds, with the wind blowing the way it did, my shot column would hit the berm in an almost flat line for about 15 feet. It didn't have enough powder to knock them over but you could hear it hitting almost every pig on the row. 38 specials, loaded to about middle ground with 148gr wad cutters were hitting 4-8 inches to the side.

That is not very High Road there Fire_Moose. Just because the story sounds unusual shouldn't cause you to insinuate it's not true.

I'm confused. You said you loaded #8 shot and then said you used a .495 round ball. Was the #8 shot in with the undersized round ball in your 12 ga.?

Fire Moose: I don't see why someone would go to the trouble of posting an elaborate falsehood that can gain them nothing unless it were true.

I was loading some regular #8s when I ran out of fiber wads so I tried something different. In the experiment shell, there was only the ribbon and ball on top of a card and 50gr of Pyrodex.

Hitting the pig was a total fluke, there were about 30 of them set up and I was pointing the barrels (no bead) at the berm above them. I was surprised at how fat the round ball came out since there it was the only one in the shell, my only guess is that the 1/4" over shot card sealed all the way down the barrel. I was expecting a poof and a lot of flame but there was actually almost normal recoil and flash.

As far as nobody being at the range, it is the Whittington center, you almost always have the range to yourself. Usually, except the sight in range, I always put the flag up when I get there and put it down when I leave.

I will be sure to take pictures from now on.

The post posted before the winky. I hoped my ellipse would convey the joking nature of the post. For exactly the reason stated, why lie about something like this?
