I found the attached picture of a supposed homemade shotgun on the internet (it wasn't a gun related website). Do you think it is real or not? I can't get over the staple gun trigger mechanism, not to mention the cylinder that doesn't seem to line up with anything.

oh sure, its real.....the 'plunger' in the staple gun acts like a primitive firing pin......the steel cylinder should prove adequate to fire at least a few rounds......

very dangerous for the user....but theres not mechanical reason why that wouldnt fire a shell.

Is it real? Yes. Will it work? I don't see why not. Will it work well? Definitely not.

I've seen guns made out of worse. Zip guns are nifty little contraptions, they can be made out of everything from ink pens to expansion bolts. As far as the pic goes ain't a doubt in my mind someone tried it.

It is not exactly rocket science, I suspect any halfway compitent person that passed a highschool shop class could build a functional pump shotgun with about $500 - $800 worth of junk chineese machine tools from Harbor Freight and some industrial scrap metal . Might be ugly, but all you really need is a basic understanding of how things work, may not be as automatic or safe as a production model (maybe manual bolt lock/release, ...)

Work or "work" without killing/injuring the user?

Yes, it could "work". I wouldn't pull the trigger to find out.

A guy made a breakbarrel on youtube. He also explains how to make it (not a good idea). I wouldn't stand anywhere remotely close to one of those grenades lol.
There's also an smg called a "lutey" or something like that. Also, not a good idea lol

The big problem I see with a lot of these designs is no understanding of metallurgy, contrary to what a lot of people thing there are many type of steel, some are more prone to cracking, etc.
