So, even after the hood on the front of my Marlin 1894C removed itself, I am still having trouble picking up the front sight, against a dark background, in the perpetual gloom of the Northwest.

So, I'm looking into alternatives to the factory installed optics.

I have experience with fiber-optic sights from black powder hunting, and I have always liked them in low-light conditions. But, from the searching I've done, there aren't a lot of rifle compatable fiber-optics out there. I did find a set of Tru Glo's, on their website, but it said the don't work on Carbines:(

I have heard people talk about ghost ring/peep sights, but I have no experience with those.

Moving into scopes and such, I also have no experince with 'Red Dot' type scopes. From what I can read, they usually don't magnify, but they do help in low-light conditions.

Finally, what about those handy little 2X scopes they make for shot guns? Could you mount something like that on a lever-action? That's really all I want. I mean, I realize I am limited to about 100 yards with this handy little rifle...I'm just looking for something that would make it easier/quicker for me to pick up a target at that range, in the gloom.

I really like my Marbles Tang sight and I am planning to change the stock front sight to a gold bead someday.

I installed a set of Ashley Express ghost ring sights on my 1894CP and much prefer the AO sights to the standard semi-buckhorn sights.

Just put an XS Sighting System aperture sight on my 1894. Much nicer than the buckhorn. I'm finally admitting to myself that my eyes aren't the same as when I was 15. :)

Got mine at Brownells.

I currently use a ghost ring and front blade set up. The rear sight is actually a Williams Peep Sight that when you take the peep out it becomes a ghost ring. The front is a custom blade made by my smith. The number on the peep is Brownells Part #962-000-019; WGRS-336; Fits Marlin 336/1894 for $34.95.

Also here is a picture of my baby. I will post another picture of a mod I just completed. The gun is Green Moly Tefloned, 16" Barrel that is factory ported. One of the old models.

tacshooter,

Would you mind mentioning where you got that rifle? It looks very familiar - I think I saw that at a gunshop in the Atlanta area. Do you like it?

Just curious.

Steve,
I got it from a friend in the Atlanta area. There are several guns similiar to it floating around the Atlanta area. My next door neighbor has a 336-30/30 stainless/black teflon coated rifle, Bernie's Gun Shop has several of their beater guns redone similiarly. Andy Gazaway in Alpharetta did the work.

My gun is in .357 MAG, not .44 MAG. The reason for this is I am currently in a condo environment. A .44 is too much, plus my wife can shoot the .357 a whole lot easier (I can barely keep it out of her hands at the range, she normally shoots it more than I do).

As, for liking it. I LOVE IT. Not that much recoil (6.5#) and compact due to the 16" barrel. It corners easy in tight hallways and aims very naturally. This weekend I put a tactical light on it that is removable for night use. I will post the pics ASAP.

PS. Andy did the work on the pistol too.

With my old eyes, and the poor factory sights from Marlin, I went to glass right away with my 1894S. The scope , was an old Weaver, 2.5X with a straight tube.
With this scope, I took 6 deer, and several hogs over the years. Recently, I saw another old Weaver on eBay, and now, the .44 Carbine has a 1.5 X 5.5 Weaver Variable. This old timer has a straight tube also, and a wonderful horizontal cross hair and tapered post reticle.
At the range, it sighted in easily. I will go hog hunting again in May, and will try it out in the field.
These small, lightweight old Weavers may well be the best scopes ever made for a carbine.
