Here is my 1861 http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa170/72coupe/COLT025.jpg Hoppy January 18, 2013, 10:24 AM A couple of years ago I made a bronze signal cannon for my Dad for his birthday. I turned and bored a piece of 1 1/8" bronze shaft material. I bored with a 7/16" bit, so it's basically a .44 caliber. I made a couple of tools to go with it. A ram/bore swab and a worm. http://www.villageboatshop.com/June%2013,%202010%20003_small.jpg http://www.villageboatshop.com/June%2013,%202010%20002_small.jpg http://www.villageboatshop.com/Boat%20launch%202010%20027_small.jpg I have a video of a test fire also.. We loaded tinfoil charges with about 1/2 teaspoon of pyrodex and damp paper towel wadding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh-1xeIaBSc I love black powder stuff. This year, I'd like to get my hands on an 1858 Remington and a flintlock. I'm drawn toward a Lyman trade rifle as well as a .62 cal smoothbore. I'm looking forward to the pictures that other people have.. Smokin'Joe January 18, 2013, 11:52 AM Very nice work! How did you attatch the trunnions to the side of the cannon? Hoppy January 18, 2013, 12:02 PM Very nice work! How did you attatch the trunnions to the side of the cannon? Thanks! I drilled through the cannon at the trunnion location with a 1/4" tap sized drill. Then used a centering 3/8" bit to drill the trunnion mortise. I used 3/8" bronze rod for the trunnions. Both the trunnion mortise and trunnions were drilled and tapped for 1/4" bronze threaded rod. The trunnions were then screwed into place with a drop of loctite. Nothing protrudes into the bore. It was a fun project and fun to shoot as well. Where do you shoot in Mass? I grew up there and in the past have belonged to Singletary in Sutton and Georgetown in Georgetown. Smokin'Joe January 18, 2013, 01:24 PM Upon getting back into blackpowder a couple of years ago after a 40 year absence I was shooting at Bob's public range in Salisbury, MA. I considered the $20 rang fee reasonable but the 60 mile drive each way was increasing the size of by carbon footprint beyond acceptable limits. I recently joined Maynard Rod & Gun which is halfway between home and work. It was a good decision. rkmitchell January 18, 2013, 02:05 PM http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/rkmitchell/40caliber1_zps43b579c0.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/rkmitchell/40caliber3_zpsca0c44ce.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/rkmitchell/40caliber5_zps93cb7ddf.jpg pohill January 18, 2013, 02:09 PM http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m217/pohill/DSCF3331.jpg Remington-Beals .36 Colt Signature Series .36 (Custer Commemorative) 5 miles from Bob's in Salisbury, MA. Old Dragoon January 20, 2013, 01:56 PM Phantom Captain, I was in BP back in the late Sixties in Indiana and did Friendship quite a few times. I'm expecting a new 1842 smooth bore any day now. kBob January 24, 2013, 06:49 PM In 1814 we took a little trip...... Calumet Plantation in 1990 with a field gun. Supposedly the cane stubble field was much the same that morning in 1814. There burned a bit of black powder there. My buddy got me monolouging over the gun and looking down range and after a few minutes I turned to find about twenty tourist and three park rangers quietly listening in. What do you do when a tourist you never saw i nyour life says "Don't stop." and the Rangers say "please, continue"? Believe it or not I am in person rather shy. Still there was much hand waving and pointing and directing folks to look in the drainage ditch befor the parapit. At least my buddy bought supper and refreshment that evening on Burbon street. Assuming it is still open I believe it is one street over on Charters but you guys have to visit Cohan's an antique arms store in Nyaw Luns and also take the paddle wheeler up to calumet and visit the collection in the tower there. And I actually have lost a bit of weight in the last 22 years..... -kBob Annihilator I January 24, 2013, 11:18 PM I had a similar experience when the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships came to Boston.
