if you mount it out far enough so you have proper eye relief( like a scout rifle)....then yes, you absolutely can.

its actually fairly common to see on high recoil rifles to prevent getting 'bit' by the scope.

It's the common solution for making a 'scout' rifle
a 4x pistol scope mounted on the 'rear sight base' of a mosin

I have a Burris pistol scope on my M39 Mosin Nagant. If I do my part, the rifle will shoot less than one inch groups with Privi 150 grsp ammo.....chris3

I have a Burris 2x pistol scope on my Ruger GSR. It works great and since I already had it the price was right!!
