I am looking for a tactical Molle vest that I can set up to carry AR mags, pistol mags, a cross draw holster. Any reccomendations? I like the 5.11 tactical vest as a base vest to build on. Any one have good experiences with other brands? Any advice? Im just having a hard time separating the air soft crap from the reliable stuff.

Try SKDTac.com, no airsoft over there.

Does it have to be a vest, cause their universal chest rig I find to be a great overall value.

you'd be suprised by the ''Airsoft crap''... most of it is not just ''similar'' it's the very same stuff carried in LEO catalogs for about a quarter of the price. Unless it's made in the USA, it all comes from the same Asian supply houses.

This is a really good, very sturdy, military surplus vest for $10. I ordered a vest and more than enough mag pouches from this guy for under $35, and was quiet happy. The vest was new and the mag pouches were used but weren't torn up at all.

silicosys4, that's the best deal I've ever seen on those vests. I actually saw one today at my surplus store for $44. Usually online you see them for $75.

I'd go for one, but I'm kind of holding out for one that accepts armor plates. There's some on amazon.com for $35 and up.

Hi, The vest depends on what you want out of it, If you want it to hold mags when you go desert shooting and not always have to run back to the truck then one of the "ranger/commando" type rigs might do, or if you want to put plates in it they have ones that are made of kevlar and ones that aren't.

You said you just want to carry mags and maybe a holster. 5.11 makes great stuff but as a broke college student I went with Condor because my buddy has a plate carrier that survived his deployment without one rip and I really like mine and went with the simple ranger type and added to that (and it doesn't make you hot like a vest!! worn in 110* heat!!). If you can afford it get your pouches from maxpedition, they're stuff if freakin tough. Or Blackhawk, don't have vest stuff from them but obviously their product is good. Condor pouches are good to, if you aren't going to war Condor can't be beat on price they are the only airsoft type stuff I would use. Some other mil types are SKD, BDS (tactical modular vest) but for $10 you might as well try the US issue vest, I have never seen one that cheap either.

Another thing, KEEP IT SIMPLE you don't need all the pouches you see on some of the pre-made vests, that crap is just going to get in your way. I have 6 ar mags with 3 pistol mags and a serpa holster on a condor rapid assult chest rig. Really plain jane but my ar doesn't get hung up on anything if I need to transition to the pistol. Invest in a quality single point sling as well!!

Google fu the bold words for some ideas! And look into the maxpedition, condor, or 5.11 pouches. All have a huge selection but on the opposite end of the price range with 5.11 and maxpedition at the top. If I could buy my pouches again I'd get Maxpedition. Thats all my $.02 from what I learned getting mine.

On a budget, ebay or surplus store a .mil issue FLC.

From there up, it's a matter of price you're willing to pay and such. I've pretty much always worn my pouches directly attached to my armor since MOLLE hit the scene, so others may have better recommendations based on firsthand knowledge.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. My intent is to keep it simple but reliable. I want to carry my AR mags, pistol mags and have a holster for my pistol. I'm willing to pay for quality, but I am a fan of USGI gear. Im liking the 10$ vest. I have 3 of the 6 magazine AR bandoliers shown on the site and love them. I'll let you know what I do and post some pics after I get it together.

I've got several military versions on ebay for under $20 that were like new. Molle mag pouches, utility pouches, and holster prices have gone up considerably lately.

I've been using a couple the Blackhawk MOLLE vests for a few years. I get a lot of ribbing from my buddies (and my boss) for wearing it backpacking or goofing around in the woods, but I added the pouches I needed to carry the stuff I wanted, and put them where it's convenient for ME. Maybe it's OCD, but I know exactly where my equipment is. Firestarter? Compass? Esbit stove? Magazines? Knife? Paracord? Matchsafe? Flashlight? It's right HERE. And, I'm more likely to put it back where I got it from, instead of setting it down and forgetting it, or losing it. I don't like digging in a coat pocket, and I've dropped things from pockets. As long as I don't have huge pouches on the vest, I can toss a field jacket on over it and not look like a crazy man.

As a bonus, I also can drink bourbon from the hydration bladder.

I think it's a great way to have everything in one spot - put it on, zip it up, fasten the buckles and walk away. The coyote tan seems to work with most woods clothing/camo I wear.

The Omega was the original, and uses paracord lacing on the sides to adjust size. It’s also a bit shorter, so it’s good for guys like me (5’10”, 5’11” if I stand up straight. The Elite is the newer version, and uses velcro to adjust for size, and is better for 6’ and taller. The benefit of the bare vests is that they are a blank canvas – you can attach the pouches and holsters you need, and place them where you want. It’s easy to reconfigure for specific needs without buying additional vests.
