I was reading an old lyman #45 manual today to check for old 38 spcl loads and came across 2 powders they used the most back then and now I guess.
Bullseye and Unique... Sweet !

Bullseye is a great powder for 45acp as well :)

I buy my Bullseye by the case, two 8 pound kegs at a time. And I make those purchases about twice a year, so that should give you some indication of how much of it I use...

Hope this helps.

I dumped out my last half pound of bullseye today as I have been trying to get several thousand .38 specials loaded with bullseye used up. I hate the powder. Glad to see it gone from my loading program.
Now unique, is my all time favorite.

BE is my go-to powder for lighter .38spl loads, and it's great in other calibers as well! Now, if I want some higher velocity loads, then Unique fits the bill quite nicely.

I've been using Bullseye for 45acp and 38spl for 25yrs. I have strayed away but I always come back. I was going to try Accurate #2 but it was $5 a lb more, so I restocked with Be again :)

Yowzer - By my calculations, that's 70k+ rounds per year. If you're loading for yourself, that's a lot of loadin', and a lot of shooting. I loaded and shot about 17k through my revolver last year, and that's about all my schedule allows.

As far as bullseye (and W231), "lead + BE/W231" apparently is the chemical formula for dirt and smoke, so I only use bullseye and/or W231 for target loads. For that, it excels.

MrBorland,

My wife and I shoot Cowboy Action matches all over the Western U.S., so we do a lot of shooting (and loading), so yes, we go through a lot of primers, powder and lead in a year's time. I also use Bullseye in .45 acp, along with Winchester 231, since both give me outstanding accuracy.

I've never found a powder that will beat Bullseye in the accuracy department, especially when I was shooting PPC matches on a regular basis on our department pistol team in the 1970's and 80's. At that time, I was shooting an average of 1,500 rounds per week in practice, plus two matches every weekend, so I was going through about 7,500 rounds of HBWC ammunition per month, with all of it loaded with Bullseye. The 50 yard line will tell you which bullet and powder combination works best, and nothing beat Bullseye.

Now we shoot for the fun of it and not for trophies and big prizes.......

Hope this helps.

I use, what I used to think was, a lot of Bullseye about 7lbs (10,000 rds) a year. I’ve been happy with it’s accuracy and have been for 30 years.

The one issue I have discovered with .38sp cases and any fast powder is there can be a variance in SD depending on where the powder is in the case when fired. I load for Model 52 and have ransom rested and chronographed lots of rounds. When I tip the pistol skyward before every shot the SD tightens up by 2 or 3 points. Keep the gun level and let the powder fly where it may and the SD will increase by 2 or 3 points. Velocities will also vary more when the powder is more scattered. This probably make no difference to the casual shooter but will affect the accuracy when you are trying for the very tightest group.

Bullseye and the .38 spl. Kind of like bread & butter, peanut butter & jelly, love & marriage. Oh well the first two work!
