Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office confirmed that she will be introducing in the Senate Thursday a new version of the so-called assault weapon ban. A spokesman said the full text will be released at a press conference on Thursday.
The California Democrat intends to expand on the ban that expired in 2004, by including handguns and shotguns, in addition to rifles. She would decrease from two to one the number of cosmetic features on a gun to have it be considered an “assault weapon.” This means that if a gun has just one item like a pistol grip or bayonet lug, then it is illegal. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the same ban in New York last week.
Furthermore, instead of grandfathering in current firearms, she would create a national gun registry for the government to track lawful gun owners. Magazines would again be limited to 10 rounds.

The NRA-ILA has a really nice and easy to use contact form. You just plug in your zip code, fill in your info, and it will already give you a nice form letter you can send off in about a minute. If you use the "remember me" option, you can write ALL your reps in a matter of seconds.

Doesn't matter if they share your views or not. You should still write them a letter.
They need to know you're their constituent and you disagree with this legislation.
They all keep a tally sheet. Make them look at that tally sheet when they place their vote.

Anyone remember back in the 90's . . . back at band camp . . . oops wrong story.
Anyone remember when Rush Limbaugh every so often would give out the Capitol switchboard phone number and challenge his audience to call their member of Congress about an issue? He'd do it and it'd be shut down. He did it during the health care debate.
http://www.rollcall.com/news/-44360-1.html
I propose we do it ourselves. Gun owners. We initiate it. Us. The guys on the 'net.
I propose that beginning this Thursday, January 24th at 10 Eastern, we call and ask for our Representative and Senator's staff. Tell them you oppose this bill - if you can get through. And I propose we don't stop calling until close of business Friday.
Be respectful. The operators are not political, they are salaried telephone operators.
Be respectful with the Congress member's staff. We are gentlemen and gentle ladies.
But we will make it clear we oppose this.
Thoughts?

Tell your legislators what you think. Your message does not have to be long or eloquent, but should clearly and respectfully tell them how you want them to vote.
I personally end messages to anti-2A legislators with a reminder that I am one of the 80 million gun owners in the US.

Just did. Senators Toomey and Casey.
Casey already said he would support AWB. I asked him to stand by his oath and prove he supports the 2nd as he said in a previous reply.
Toomey is hard to read. Two previous responses went into detail about mental health (he is a pediatric psychologist I believe). Not much mention of firearms, so not a definite no vote.

I really think the severity of this one is a negotiating ploy. Even she has to know there's very slim chance of passing somthing that broad, but the anti's can tone it down as a "compromise" to pull support from the weaker pro gun folks. I've been writing my reps every week. This is the reply from Senator Sherrod Brown (D) Ohio:
Dear rjrivero:
Thank you for expressing your views about firearms legislation.
As a United States Senator, I took an oath to defend the Constitution. The Second Amendment makes clear that Americans have the right to own guns, and the Supreme Court over time has given meaning to this right.
When our children and families are no longer safe at our schools, in our malls, and in our movie theaters, then we as a country must take action. The shocking numbers of public shootings throughout the country last year, culminating in Newtown, Connecticut, demands that we engage in a serious national discussion about gun violence, not just in terms of weapons and bullets, but also including mental health access, public safety officers, and our responsibility both as individuals and a society.
Like all rights, it must be balanced against others. I have supported restrictions on the possession of assault-style weapons so our public safety officers are not put at increased risk, and restrictions on the ability of criminals to possess handguns but I fully support the right of Ohioans to own firearms.
Should the Senate consider this issue in the future, I will support common-sense reforms that protect both public safety and the rights of gun owners. Thank you again for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator
This is the reply I got from Senator Rob Portman (R) OH.
Thank you for contacting me about our Second Amendment rights. It is good to hear from you.
I am a gun owner who believes in the right to bear arms in defense of self, family and property. During my 12 years serving in Congress, I received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association for defending our Constitutional Rights. I opposed the so-called "assault weapons ban" and opposed the Brady Bill. I supported repealing both the Clinton gun ban and the Washington, D.C. gun ban. I voted to protect the private information of gun owners; to protect state gun laws; and to protect firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers or importers from lawsuits and damages related to criminal misuse by a third party.
As a life-long hunter, I also believe the rights and freedoms of hunters must be guarded and I developed an executive order that the president signed to enhance hunting and fishing opportunities at wildlife refuges and national preserves. As your Senator, I will continue to protect our Constitutional freedoms and will be a strong advocate for preserving these rights and traditions for future generations.
Thank you for taking the time to contact my office. For more information, I encourage you to visit my website at www.portman.senate.gov. Please keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Rob Portman
U.S. Senator

Don't make that mistake.
I've watched the news the past three weeks and seen about 3 dozen discussions where pro-gun control advocates are floating some survey that they say says NRA members want or are at least comfortable with more gun control.
They are whispering in the ears of our legislators, telling them the average NRA member will accept this. It's only the fringe who opposes it. Don't let them speak for you.

And we'll smack her down.
Then she'll ask for a quick orbital trip around the moon.
And we'll smack her down.
Then she'll ask for a Molniya orbit.

Then she'll ask for Geosynchronous orbit.
And, guess what? We'll smack her down.
Then she'll ask for Medium earth orbit.
And she will be smacked down yet again.
And then she'll ask for low-earth orbit.
Only to be smacked down again.
And again.
And again.
I don't want to see her stupid ideas get off the drawing board, much less the launch pad.

Everything is calculated in D.C. Reid will not introduce the bill if he feels they don't have the votes. Too early to make predictions but we should keep the pressure on Congress as suggested. Dear Senator,
I have received a message from your office stating that you would support further restrictions on weapons. Regardless of your use of the phrase "I support the Second Amendment, but...", I do not believe you support the Second Amendment, and by extension the entire Bill of Rights. As a law-abiding gun owner, I would consider it a form of undue prejudice to consider my rights (and the rights of millions like me) worth restricting for the sake of attempting to restrict a few madmen. Restrictions, I might add, that will not prevent madmen from commiting attrocities, due to the way criminals do not follow the law.
As such, I ask that you represent me by opposing gun control legislation, and supporting legislation that addresses the larger social issues that result in violence (economy, mental health, and overcrowded prisons). If you follow my request, I am willing to donate time and money to help your next election. If you vote in support of S. Feinstein's bill (or any other) to restrict my rights, I will donate time and money to helping your opponents replace your position in office.
Thank you for your time,

I just hate it when they make the leap of 'logic' that banning guns automatically means safer citizens, as if it is somehow a proven fact.
The flip side is that it paints us as people who don't care if children die so long as we can continue to excercise some vague, antiquated 'right' that they don't consider to be important.
I'm a father, and I feel that my kids will be less safe if this nonsense becomes law.
In fact, I can prove it. My kids will be 66% less safe, as that is what the reduction of my magazine capacity will be if this law passes.
I too want my kids to be safe in malls and movie theaters, and I can catagorically state that they would be a lot safer if their daddy could carry the means to defend them against violent criminals.
As for being safe in school, well I'd certainly be a lot happier if there was a cop or security guard ready to perform the Mozambique Drill on any violent intruder.
Make no mistake, it's the gun grabbers that are responsible for these tragic deaths.
If they hadn't spent so long stigmatizing guns and gun owners, we'd have far fewer tragic events.

I mailed a letter to my Congressman and called his office and talked to a staff member. I received two responses, both with the same form letter. This would indicate that they don't police the responses very well and may be going by sheer numbers to some extent.

Remember, last I checked, all the law makers STILL work for US. We can vote them out and replace them with ones who will represent the will of the people. What happened in New York may be our Pearl Harbor and the latest "proposal" from Feinstein is simply continued attack from the antis. As I see it, NRA is building a war chest for a major offensive and sustained battle to continue lobbying the law makers and federal court judge positions - http://www.nrastandandfight.com/absolutism-vs-principles.html
We will regroup in light of new attacks on our right to gun ownership and we may need to be dynamic and flexible to be successful with this new war. But like our forefathers and patriots, if we come together and pull our resources and stand together, we shall prevail! Imagine what will do to politician's voting as the Pro 2A marches continue to increase around the nation? I have seen this great country and people achieve great things. I have faith that righteous men and women will once again stand tall and fight a good fight.
Do not be confused by the noise. We are now at war with those who attacked our right to self defense and their objective is to take our guns away. Our clear objective is to defeat them and support the Constitution, which all law makers take an oath to protect when they are voted into office by us. If they don't, remove them from the office. Call/email/write and let them know ... it's one thing politicians fear ... being voted out of office.

I already did my first letter this week (Printed) but decided to do an extra email due to the special occasion...
I am writing you all again, to remind you that as a registered voter (Who
typically votes democrat) and a supporter of the constitution I will bring
all of my political resources to bear against ANYONE who votes to take
away my rights to own the firearms I currently own.
Add to this list any form of registration as it will not be tollerated and
the WILL be political consequences at the next election.
You know as well as I do, that the processes that are in place are all
that is needed to keep us safe. The problem is a lack of enforcement of
existing laws.
And my last point, I am very disapointed that all I have recieved from my
representatives that I voted to send to office are "stock" replies. It
shows you have forgoten about us in Maine.
I am a professional with a lot of experience and I have offered to help
numerous times and your offices will not get back to me. I was deferred to
the Maine Sportsman Alliance and the Maine Handgun Violence coalition. If
I thought the status quo was capable of handling this situation I would
not have bothered to offer you my help.
I dont actually vote democrat, BUT I think it is very important that they think I do as they will consider me a lost vote.

Also look at the thread in Activism that points out the Senate Judiciary Committee members. Those in green need reinforced. Those in red should be given a brief and polite reminder of the backlash to the passing of the '94 AWB and the cost to their party. For those that aren't solid Antis persuasion making positive suggestions on what would address the root cause of violence without creating the impression that there's a reasonable threat that requires radical restrictions like bans on firearms, magazines or ammunition. Use any personal story that is true about you or someone you know that use our rifles for hunting or competition or that have used any firearm to protect a life. Don't make anything up.

Senator Feinstein is a staunch gun control advocate. Despite her stance, in the 1970s, she obtained a concealed firearms carry permit, and carried a handgun with her. A CCW permit was then rare in California, and was the only such permit in San Francisco. At the time, she was the target of a terrorist group that had shot out all the windows in her home. She no longer carries a gun What a hypocrite.Surely she must be near a hundred , maybe she will kick the bucket before long.

While I think it's always a good idea to read a bill, Feinstein has already made her intentions clear via her website.
• Massive list of banned guns.
• More than one "evil feature" makes it an illegal "assault weapon."
• Ban on the sale or transfer of any magazines that hold >10 rounds.
• Guns already in private hands must be registered per the NFA, no different than if they were a belt-fed machine gun.

While the summary on her page isn't a copy of the actual bill, I doubt that her bill differs in any significant way.

I wish so many guys would stop assuming that this won't go anywhere. That might influence others to not take action. I'll be contacting my Pro 2nd Amendment officials today.

Hope it is not another "we have to pass it in order to find out what is in it" deal.

Hope it is not another "we have to pass it in order to find out what is in it" deal.
I'm sure they'll stuff it full of goodies to get more votes.

Look at the thread in Activism pointing out the Senators running for office in 2014 as pressure points to push on this.
It might be worthwhile to mention that despite Feinstein saying this is for Sandy Hook, she has been targetting law-abiding gun owners for decades and is capitalizing on this event to further her long-standing agenda. While she is at the end of her political career and is going for broke trying to establish her legacy, other senators may not wish to undermine their politcal careers so quickly by supporting this bill, particularly those who are looking forward to a close fight in 2014.

You need to contact your representatives. Folks in New York are probably thinking..... what happened? You saw how quickly the debt stuff got handled after there was finally some support..... take a lesson. Congress normally moves very slowly, but on an emergency basis, it can move very quickly.

"All semiautomatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature: threaded barrel; second pistol grip; barrel shroud; capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip; or semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm."
Looks like Glocks may be banned as they would all probably be considered semi-auto versions of the Glock 18.

I actually want them to vote so we have a record of their treason.

"...or semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm".
That could be very nasty.
The Beretta 92 series have an automatic counterpart, and, as noted, so do the Glock 9mm pistols.
