Armed raid at village bank Feb 1 2003

By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

AN ARMED robber left staff terrified at a village bank.

The man, wearing a motorcycle helmet, fled with a large cash haul after producing a handgun at Lloyds TSB in Wessenden Head Road, Meltham.

It was the third gun crime in five days in the Huddersfield area - sparking increasing concern about firearms.

Police today urged a vital witness to the raid to come forward.

Det Insp Sam Cooke, who is leading police inquiries, said the man went into the bank just after 1pm yesterday. He threatened staff with the gun and fled with a substantial amount of cash. It is thought he may have been seen fleeing by a woman driving a pale green car.

Det Insp Cooke said: "He was seen getting into a red Ford Sierra estate car in the car park at the rear of the bank and a woman driver entering at the same time had to reverse to let him out.

"She was possibly a customer and we feel she may well have had a clear view of the driver. We urgently need to see this lady and ask that she contacts us."

The robber drove off at speed along Holmfirth Road and Thick Hollins Road towards Holmfirth. He was wearing a dark boilersuit and was 5ft 9in tall.

A gang armed with a gun and baseball bats raided a house in Swan Lane, Lockwood, on Tuesday night. And on the previous night a man was gunned down in his flat in Market Street, Milnsbridge.

But not about criminals? Perhaps they should ban cars and helmets.
