The letter, signed by 42 Representatives, was hand-delivered to the president.

...The gun control proposals the president offered last week are a constitutional non-starter, and in fact, would have had zero impact in preventing the tragedy in Newtown.

Release - Rokita Leads House Letter to President: New Gun Control Measures are a ?Constitutional Non-Starter? | Congressman Todd Rokita (http://rokita.house.gov/press-release/release-rokita-letter-POTUS-2ndAmdt)

There are 434 representatives - 242 republican, 193 democrat; only 42 of them signed this letter. Let your representatives know that THEIR names should have been on that letter as well!

I just called mine and his assistant did not know anything about it.

So, she pulled it up, and told me that she will forward it to her boss.

She also mentioned that he does sign pro second amendment letters. I will see what happens.

I just sent an email to mine. He was not one of the signers. He is typically pro 2A. If nothing else it is a gental reminder that we are watching what they are, and are not, doing.

I contacted mine via his FB wall, which he checks throughout the day. He is supposedly Pro-2A, but has been pretty quiet in recent weeks. I asked him why his name isn't on this letter - waiting for a response. Another constituent posted a single word response to my question - Fanatic, to which I responded, Constitutional Constructionist.

Good Call,

I just sent this email to my rep.

Dear Rep. Carter,

As you are probably aware, Rep. Rokita of Indiana, recently sent a letter to President Obama concerning the unconstitutional gun laws now being considered in the United States Congress. I looked over the names of his colleagues that signed that letter but failed to find your name.

I respectfully ask why you did not sign this letter? It is my opinion that the President's anti-gun agenda is a assault on both the second and tenth amendments. I look forward to your response.

Thank you,

Mine signed it. And I got an email back from him... which expressed his displeasure over the 23 EOs and the tendency of this administration to bypass Congress -- and the legislative protocols.

At least four Texas congressmen, John Culberson (7th District, MY congressman), Ted Poe (another true American and Texan), Kevin Brady, and Steve Stockman. There may be others, but I recognize those four right off the bat. I sent a message to John Culberson thanking him for his support of the 2nd Amendment and adding "shame on the 200+ republicans who did not sign".

42 Republicans? Sounds like Tea Party caucus hijinks. Did they TELL the rest about the letter, or did they just fire it off and then start shilling to put pressure on the rest of the GOP to gain leverage/ score points? Stupid gamesmanship like this between people we NEED to be allies right now is only going to hurt us long-term.

Do you know that to be the case, or are you making assumptions?

I asked a QUESTION, actually. Did they tell them? Did they give the others a good-faith opportunity to sign? I am skeptical, but if even one mainstream GOPer comes forward and says, "Yes, they asked me to sign, but I refused" I'll accept that as a negative answer to my suspicions.

If, on the other hand, a spokesperson for the mainstream GOP comes forward and says "Yes, they asked but because they included X language, we felt we could not back them", then the OP will have HIS answer as well, and we can discuss the validity of those points of view.

So far though, it sounds like at least one asked why they didn't sign had never heard of it.

ETA: my first clue was that the letter originated with Todd Rokita, the firebrand freshman Tea Party Rep from Indiana ...

Todd Rokita was the Mayor of Lafayette IN during the past few years while I was going to college. Glad to see he's taking the right steps!

Sent two letters to my congess/state legislators:

I am a concerned constituent of yours and would like to call your attention to a letter that Representative Todd Rokita of the 4th District of Indiana sent to President Obama on January 24, 2013:

http://rokita.house.gov/press-release/release-rokita-letter-POTUS-2ndAmdt

Representative Rokita and 42 of his House colleagues signed this letter which points out the unconstitutionality of the President's and other Senator's & Representative's proposed gun control laws and they have vowed to fight any legislation which infringes on the Second Amendment. In the light of Indiana Representative's Rokita, Stutzman, and Messer signing this letter, I ask why you did not sign this letter as well?

Please know that I am very passionate about the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as a hunter, sportsman, law abiding citizen, and member of the National Wild Turkey Federation & National Rifle Association. I urge you to sign this letter and support Representative Rokita and his House colleagues in their efforts to block legislation that infringes on the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.

I don't think it was Tea Party "antics." The Tea Party is on our side with this one and are also not the enemy. Two of my states Reps signed it, one is junior, the other not. My personal rep did not sign it and I am putting his feet to the fire - I expect an answer Monday, else I'll call again.

Got a response from one of my Indiana State Senators in support of Todd Rokita:

Ole Humpback, I agree with the letter. I will not support legislation that restricts the 2nd Amendment rights of Hoosiers. State Senator Sue Landske

and

Ole Humpback, Since I serve in Indianapolis, I will forward your concerns to our representatives in Washington, D. C. I will not support any legislation that comes before the General Assembly that restricts the 2nd Amendment rights of Hoosiers. State Senator Landske

Glad to know that the 10th Amendment is alive & well should we need to call on it!

Mr. Steve Chabot, 3rd on the list. :) There's a reason my Dad (teacher, and democrat voter until we became gun owners around '08) has voted for him every time for the last umpteen years, and he'll have my vote for the next time he's up. :D

Those with Reps on the list, presume that they are now receiving letters of dissent that need to be countered with support.

Not to hijack the thread, b7tac, what's your position on armed teachers in school?

It may just be a rumor but I heard they were taking advantage of the firearms distraction to get some more liberalized legislation through like immigration "reform" amongst others.

OK. Just got off the phone with Rep. Rokita's office (I'm not from his district, so they really didn't want to speak with me). The letter was not read from the floor. His office would not tell me how he contacted other representatives to obtain the 42 signatures. It may very well be that the rest of our representatives didn't know about the letter before, but it's public knowledge now and they now have the opportunity to put their support on the record!
