A sheriff who released a radio ad urging Milwaukee-area residents to learn to handle firearms so they can defend themselves while waiting for police said Friday that law enforcement cutbacks have changed the way police can respond to crime.

In the 30-second commercial, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. says personal safety is no longer a spectator sport.

"I need you in the game," he says.

These are the cold, hard facts that we face all across the nation. Cutbacks will only delay response time from the police. I'm glad someone in authority had the nads to put this on a radio ad.

Good on the sheriff for telling it like it is. Sadly, the head of the local deputy sheriffs association does not get it.

The ad has generated sharp criticism from other area officials and anti-violence advocates. The president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs' Association, Roy Felber, said it sounds like a call to vigilantism.

Good for him. Its amazing the number of people who will not take even a small amount of responsibility in their own protection and safety.

I don't know if the heads of these departments are elected or appointed but it seems to be a political job. I'm willing to bet that most local authorities support this message across the country because it is true. Cutbacks will delay response times and as we already know, they get there after the fact to investigate and try to solve the crime. They can't protect everybody, everywhere, all the time. Criminals know this so that's why it's called a crime of opportunity. The bad guys know when the opportunity is there, not us. The victims have to defend themselves or hold them off until the police do arrive.

The Zimmerman comparison makes no sense. Clarke is advocating people defend themselves when the threat comes to them. I didn't see anything about him asking the members of the public to go out on armed patrol. Besides, Zimmerman did call 911.

It just proves that the anti-gun crowd has no idea what self defense means.

They get it. They just don't recognize it as a legitimate use for a firearm. Look at the UK for instance, you can get a gun if you have a legitimate reason to own one (pest control) but they don't think there is ever a good enough reason to shoot a bad guy with it.

These people don't get that if the bad guy wants to rape or murder them, simply complying with the bad guy's requests is not going to be a good option.

The Cheshire, CT home invasion murders should be the poster headlines shown to anyone anti-gun. People are apathetic because they think it can never happen to them.
It is an amazing, tragic story of what can happen when you least expect it.

Great message!

This link has a link to listen to the actual radio message. I am not sure about the furlows and layoffs that he is speaking about. So I looked it up and apparently the County is trying to force the Sheriff into 27 layoffs of deputies.

Jeri Bonavia, executive director of Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, said Clarke took a dangerous position with his ad.
She also said.

"I feel like this is such an irresponsible thing for our chief public safety officer of a county to do," Bonavia said. "I think he owes this community an apology. And if he really believes that he's not capable of providing for our public safety he should get a different job."

The nerve of that women really "he should get a different job," he is right you can't wait for the police. How about some funding for the people who put their lives on the line and some respect. Police departments everywhere are seeing cut backs and even before they can't make it there in the millisecond it takes for someone to take the life of a family member.

Can anyone find contact info for sheriff david clark? I'd like to send him an e-mail thanking him and letting him know he has support.

Ryanxia, try here:

http://county.milwaukee.gov/OfficeoftheSheriff7719.htm

There is no email link that I can find, but the office does have a Facebook page, and I suppose you could also use the "complaints" form, which is normally used to report a problem with a deputy or the sheriff's office in general.

There's also some interesting news links on that site, including one where Sheriff Clarke partially attributes increased burglary rates in Milwaukee County to the state's lack of an aggressive stance on crime and prosecution.

quite a change for a Milw. Sheriff! Somehow I the overwhelming feeling his message is more one of surrender though.

TN Billy ... Clark has always been like this. The guy has a sign posted on his house with a picture of his dog and a pistol with the message reading: "We don't call 9-11 here."

He's always been a straight shooter in my book ... my kinda' people!

The City of Milwaukee is another matter. Never heard of a Chief that wasn't the exact opposite of Clark.

Please understand and accept that it really doesn't matter to the caretaker elites how many disarmed & defenseless people are made to suffer for their morally bankrupt and untenable policies.

yokel (& All):

You are exactly correct. You are also correct to surmize that many (most?) people do not yet believe that our "ruling class (http://spectator.org/archives/2010/07/16/americas-ruling-class-and-the)" is as cruel as it is. But when you consider that most leftist environmentalists would really, truly prefer that humans not exist (excepting maybe themselves and a few carefully chosen sex partners), this puts it in perspective. But the cruelty toward their fellow men, whom they consider inferior, pervades all leftists. It goes back at least as far as Rousseau (http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/phil/philo/phils/rousseau.html) and his "Natural Man" theory. (Rousseau: 1712-1778, a French philosopher (http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/phil/philo/phils/rousseau.html) who died just before his theories were conclusively disproven by the French Revolution, in some analyses) Leftists ever since have resented the rest of us for messing up their pipe dream of said Natural Man because of our life-enhancing use of tools, such as firearms.

Sheriff Clarke said (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8TCx-sM1vw&feature=player_embedded) that we all have a duty to defend ourselves. A duty goes significantly deeper than a "right", if I am thinking correctly.

Guns and good training/practice with them are required for self defense, given the magnitude of the threat.

Wow. That's a fantastic message from a CLEO. Every Sheriff in the nation needs to take that attitude to heart.
