I'm cheating a little since this was only issued to me.

Colt M4A1, serial number W352845. 3 years, Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms, Texas, Nevada, and two trips to Afghanistan. Shot this thing so much that they had to re-barrel it. Ah, the memories..... I miss this little guy. :(

That's not cheating at all! The Army/USMC should have a 'you break it, you bought it' policy. 'So, you wore out your carbine? Good job, give us $20 for it and take it home with you'...
Thanks for your service!

rugerdude
January 29, 2013, 09:10 AM
Thanks for your appreciation. The list price for a Colt M4A1 is somewhere around $550. I don't believe their military contract guns come even close to the quality of the civilian guns but I never once had a malfunction with mine on either semi or full auto, suppressed or unsuppressed. Only problems I ever had were due to a bad lot of ammo.

I wish they let me keep my M110 SASS though too. That thing lists for $30,000 :what: I'm convinced that somebody, somewhere is getting kickbacks for that gun.

Some nice set-ups in this thread. I do love the "old school" offerings I see also.

My latest is a Daniel Defense DDM4 V5 AR15 rifle. 12" rail. Trijicon ACOG TA31H-G 4x32 BAC scope. Troy BUIS (front sight is HK style, rear sight is a DOA Di-opter style). The stock is a MagPul UBR. The grip is a Hogue. The side and bottom rail panels are MagPul XM style. The top (and part of the sides) rail covers are MagPul's ladder style. The magazine is a MagPul.

Daniel Defense Lower with PSA 6.8SPC upper along with my OD coated Colt Rail gun. Note the Barrett 6.8 mag (I got two for a song). I can't add a picture of the DD M4 V3 5.56 upper and Aimpoint PRO because I have no pics of my sinking boat. Unfortunately the boat caught fire first and burned to the water line before sinking rapidly with my ~2000 rnds of 6.8 and ~5000 rnds 5.56.

This thread makes me sad. I'm at the point in my life where paying down the pile of student loans I have racked up takes priority number one now that I'm making good money. I told myself that if I made a big dent in them this year that I would use my tax return to get another gun. As it turns out, I held up my end of the bargain, but the market has made it pretty tough to get in the game now. I'll bide my time until the credit card bills start arriving at people's doorsteps. This thread is not helping me keep my wallet in my pocket though.

Here's mine. I'm mostly a pistol shooter but a buddy and I decided to build some AR's a few years ago. We each bought a stripped lower and started from there. This was right after getting everything assembled. I have since added an EOTech and a vertical foregrip. We are both very glad we built these up with the current hysteria going on.

OK, sorry the one in the center is not an AR 15 type but an AR 10.

The foreground is a Colt Sporter Target, the AR 10 is an Armalite set up for match, and in the background is a Double Star and till I ended up with it I had no clue what a Double Star was. Hey, it was priced right and I am not even an AR 15 type so I bought it. :)

The AR 10 is by far my favorite in the lot. Also in the picture the Colt and Armalite are supported by $3.00 bi pods.

And mine:

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w160/sdrct/DSCN0557-1.jpg

My AR is more special to me than any other gun I own. While my son was in the Gulf for 14 months, every Christmas, Fathers Day, Birthday, etc. while he was deployed, he ordered another part of this rifle shipped to me as a gift. We consulted on every choice, he advised and I got to pick. When he came home he sat at the kitchen table and put it all together on a lower that he already had.

DPMS Sweet 16 upper, ACE Skeleton stock, Troy BUIS, DPMS lower, PA Red Dot

I've since added some more little goodies.

Someone wants to take this away from me?

I have a National match AR too, but this is the latest addition. It is my true franken-AR, so I will list the parts below. This is my "recce" build. I finished it up this fall with the addition of the improved stock. I started building it this spring and bought components as I could afford them. I thought there might be a shortage and a price increase come fall. I decided to go with different colors on some components to mix up the black appearance and keep with the recce rifle theme. Many, it seems, were modified in the field. I have already sent 1200 rounds down range with this. It points more naturally than any rifle I own.
Lower Parts
Stag lower purchased stripped.
White Oak Armament parts kit minus trigger
Geissle Automatics SSA trigger
Hogue rubberized grip
Vltor milspec stock kit
Extended aluminum trigger guard

Upper
Daniel Defense 16 inch cold hammer forged chrome-lined barrel, mid length gas system
White oak receiver M4 feed ramps done BEFORE anodizing
Daniel Defense Omega 9.0
Colt "C" marked bolt and bolt carrier
Tango Down forward grip
Surefire G2 with kit, Vltor scout mount for light
Eotech EXPS2
Eotech Magnifier with switch to side
GGG Flip up irons
Vicker's two point sling

Stuff you don't see- Lots of PMags, lots of ammo, components and a reloading bench.

Yep, even with index clips it bugged me. besides its intent was 3 gun, don't need attachment points period.
However the quad rail is being used for my 6.8 upper that is on hold since I picked the wrong time to build it. ( still waiting on my barrel that I ordered pre Newton and a BCG)

If you're going to shoot three gun I'd imagine you want something that free floats... a Troy industries alpha tube? PRI?

I get it now, but still, delta ring retained handguards on a competition/precision build are a bad idea.

and your rear sight is still on backwards.

Indeed, however, in the current configuration you are needlessly reducing your sight radius by about an inch...

do whatever you want, I'm not trying to argue with you... it just bugs me, but I am somewhat OCD about guns...

avs11054, kimberkid is correct. The AR in the pic is a pistol build.

I built it up on a lower that I had purchased as a stripped lower.

Something to be aware of that some folks may not realize, placing a short barreled upper on a rifle lower is a no no in the eyes of the ATF. Felony type no no. Unless the background check, paperwork, tax stamp, engraving, etc are done.

I've noticed quite a few short uppers being sold lately, it would definately be prudent to research the laws concerning AR pistols and short barreled rifles.

No. It's a pistol, just like any other. If you put that upper on a rifle lower, then yes, you'd need a SBR stamp. Otherwise, it's just a pistol.

Here's my newest one, I still haven't had the chance to fire her.

-The lower receiver a Colt 6920, got rid of the Rogers Super-Stoc and replaced it with a Colt CAR stock and swapped out the mil-spec trigger with a Geissele SSA.
-The upper is a Noveske 14.5 Lo-Pro
-Aimpoint CompM2
-SureFire M962 with Veleno Designs XP-G LED drop-in module, about 250 lumens, with a SureFire SR-05 tape switch.
-Bobro shorty VFG and generic ladder rail covers

I absolutely love the way this rifle handles, despite the big 9-volt SureFire and the full-size Aimpoint it is extremely light. I may replace the CompM2 with a 2 MOA Micro T-1 or H-1 down the road for greater weight savings. And maybe a MagPul CTR stock and new pistol grip.

S&W M&P15 lower, FN A2 upper, 14.5" barrel with an unknown AK-style brake (will get shortened to 10.5" and have KX-3), MagPul MOE handguard/AFG2, Pearce 1911 grip frame, MagPul trigger guard, MPI-tested Detroit Gun Works BCG, CMMG LPK and a DPMS charging handle. Finish is Rust-oleum Dark Taupe with Rust-oleum satin clearcoat, so far it's held up to some abuse and is easy to touch up.

Oh yeah, the BSA red dot will be on a 'Z' mount before the end of the month that should co-witness with my sights. ;)

Thanks CmdrSlander, my Colt/Noveske hybrid is my new pride and joy, and like I said it is very light. I can't wait to shoot it. I do agree that the stock could be more ergonomic but I really do like the CAR stock. I will probably still replace it with a MagPul CTR though, and get a TangoDown BattleGrip to replace the A2 grip, both for ergonomics.

I kind of like the old school approach. Though, the rifles are old school, VZ was made somewhere 60-70 and the EBR is a Colt M-16A1 (at least that's what it says on the side). Interestingly, both the VZ and the M16 felt similar in handling - weight, recoil, follow up shots etc.

AR chambered in 30-06. And yes it's an 8 pound rifle.

Why?
1) Because 30-06 drops anything in North America
2) Long range (1000 to 1500 yards if I do my job behind it)

This is their old marketing pic that was taken down.

Ok, details on the 30-06 AR. The company is Noreen firearms. http://www.onlylongrange.com

While shopping for my 50 BMG last fall I ran across them and Nemo Arms. http://www.nemoarms.com

Both companies are producing either a 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua semi automatic AR platform. At $5999 (Noreen) and $5300 (Nemo) I about had a heart attack. Then I asked Noreen if they were ever planning a 30-06 chambered AR system (because the ammo is cheaper). They said they had a prototype and were working on it.

Of course I said TAKE MY MONEY. And ordered it in very early November (pre-election) for $1XXX. 2013 prices have gone up (thanks Obama) but they are still very VERY reasonable at $1799.

Initial production was slated for January of this year but production delays and reworking the magazine have pushed it to early April 2013. Apparently I am damn near the top of the list on private citizen orders (serial number SHOULD be below 100 for those who like that kind of stuff)

I've spoken for about a total of 90 minutes on the phone with their engineers and reps getting some information so I'll put everything I know here. (A review will be coming after the rifle arrives.)

So here are the specs right off their web page. Here's the link but I'll type them out here.

BN 36 Rifle (http://www.onlylongrange.com/bn36.asp)

Caliber: 30-06, 270, 25-06
Operation: Direct Gas Impingement, Side Charging Semiauto
Barrel : 22"
Muzzle Brake attached, uses 5/8 X 24 threads
Weight: 8 pounds
Rifling: RH 1 in 10
Stock: A2
Magazine: 5/10/20 rounds
Trigger: Milspec or optional

Notes from my discussions with them.

If you go on their website you will also see the Bad News 338 Lap / 300 WinMag rifle as well. That rifle is 13.5 pounds while the BN36 is only 8 pounds. I was told that the receivers for the BN36 are slightly lighter and thinner because the brute force strength is not required for 30-06 versus the other cartridges.
Comes with a Hard Case.
270 Winchester & 25-06 Remington will be forthcoming after intial orders are filled and shipped [pending]
That muzzle brake WILL be coming off when I work up accelerator rounds for this beast.
The entire system is based off the AR-15 platform. The custom parts on this are the upper receiver, bolt carrier, lower receiver, mag and obviously the barrel [who else makes a 30-06 chambered AR barrel ... I need to know]
The bolt is a standard AR-10 bolt system but Noreen is using a proprietary heat treat system on them to make them stronger in order to accomodate the 270 Winchester and 25-06's higher chamber pressures (65K psi / 63k psi per SAAMI specs).
What this means is that 65K psi 30-06 cartridges are possible in a semi-auto chamber and I intend to slowly and SAFELY work up loads [while checking for pressure signs obviously] for long range and specialized 30-06 loads specific to this rifle.
Triggers and internal parts are completely AR-15 compatible
Noreen does offer a Timney trigger option for $260 or so [not an exact price quote so just ask em]
For Class 3 guys I was informed that an RDIAS will fit and operate in this platform. Obviously, let's play by the rules and be legal (of course) ... (They have a video of a full auto Bad News 338) ....
Full Auto Bad News 338 Lapua (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfFg5FRDubU)
The stock uses a rifle length buffer tube for the AR-15
Magazines: This is the part that is not so fun. The rifle comes with 2 magazines and they are using a proprietary design. Extra mags are at $80 a pop (at last quote) but if you order more than 10 they will drop the price at bit ($60 seems reasonable). On the bright side they use a pinning option to modify the 20 round to handle only 5 or 10 depending on what's legal for hunting around you.
The second bright spot on the magazines is that the magazine well will be larger than 85mm (OAL for 30-06). This should allow very heavy bullet loads to be worked up.
I'm sure that everyone is watching ammo prices like a hawk but here's an interesting twist. 30-06 is now regularly cheaper than 5.56/.223 ammo that I have been finding in stock in places.
At last check if you order direct from Noreen you can expect roughly an August to September delivery date. They did however state that they have a few thousand in the pipeline going out to various dealer orders. So if you just HAVE to have it now, you can probably get it in May with a bit of a premium.

Now for myself I have some seriously interesting plans for this puppy.

I do intend to get a second upper receiver so that I can alternate calibers. Noreen has already stated that they will only sell complete rifles at this point until they catch up with initial demand.
I also intend on working up that 1500 yard 30-06 load (more on that in a second post)
Accelerator rounds: Been doing a LOT of homework and talking to some serious gun nuts that do have 1 MOA working versions of their pet sabot loads. Every shooter that has a decent load says the key is tuning barrel harmonics for it.

Alternate calibers: Noreen admits to having working models for 270 Win and 25-06.
For my second upper receiver I can picture that a custom barrel will allow for some much more interesting chamberings

6mm-06 / 6.5mm-06
338-06 A-square
35 Whelen
375 Whelen
Any of the Ackley Improved models of chambering
8 X 57 mm Mauser
7 x 57 mm Mauser
God only knows what else that has an OAL around 3 - 3.34 inches
I'm going to do a lot of measuring but with their report of extra space in the magazine their MIGHT be enough room for some longer beltless magnum cartridges with the right gunsmith. OAL for 338 RUM and 300 RUM are 91mm. Dakotas and others might be a possibility as well. [and a mag mod will have to be done of course]
For those magnum cartridges you will obviously have to modify the bolt face from .473 in (12.0 mm) to .534 in (13.6 mm) [and probably more stuff too, not a gunsmith so don't crucify me] . I freely admit this might not be the best idea considering prior comments from Noreen but a man can certainly tinker a bit ....

Wolf extra power springs (like what guys are using for 50 Beowulf and 450 Bushmaster) should help with additional recoil. Experiments to follow obviously. :D
My Geissele SD3G trigger is sitting on the shelf waiting for this rifle to arrive. Considering how fast guys can dump mags with those things this is some serious firepower. Can you say 3 gun with a 30-06? Should be interesting to say the least ...

In conclusion I think Noreen's got one seriously winning product here. If it's as strong and reliable as I think it is (and they are marketing it as), Noreen Firearms might have just created the 21st century true battle rifle. Or maybe just a 21st century version of the Browning Automatic Rifle.

Either way, we (the customers) WIN. :D
I also know I'm already abandoning the 5.56 permanently.

Hope this helps,
Brandon

Ok, for those that were interested in a potential 1500 yard 30-06 round.
Was working on some future loads for the BN36 (referenced above) in my QuickLoad and discovered that yes there are 30-06 loads that stay supersonic past 1500 yards.

The trick is to use the extra heavy bullets like the Berger hybrids
Berger makes a 230 grain hybrid bullets with insane G1 BC of .743
(For some more reference material on it : http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/berger230tgt.html )

Not sure about the rules on the recipe (it's 62K psi) so PM me for that if you want it (or load the numbers in QL and run it yourself)

But here's the ballistic chart and drop table. I freely admit that is a steep drop but the math and the round appear to be able to do it.

Probably the coolest AR in the world. I like it and i dont like EBR's so thats saying something.

you guys dont believe .30-06 is effective to 1500 yards? theres a guy on snipers hide shooting a .308 to 1800+ barring his target is a sheet of plywood its still putting on target. Theres another guy with about 10 grand in his ASICS/reminton 700 '06 straight 26" contour hitting 20x20 steel at 1680 reliably. Check out the tube gun for 1000 yards on 6mmbr.com built off a .30-06 8" at 1000 prone is a pretty good hint ;)

Nope. I just like the side charger. I am a big AK fan, and i own a few right sided charging rifles, so i figured why change? plus i don't particularly care for the FA on AR's and the shell deflectors.... although the only drawback is that you need a hex wrench to take out the BCG, so I keep one in my stock. I would eventually like to change it to piston driven, but it shoots nice as it is, so really no need to change it. I have a video of me zeroing it @ http://www.youtube.com/theliberator88 it's not an amazing vid, but it just ran smoothly..... but stupid me forgot to grab the brass!:banghead:

I'm pretty sure switching to piston drive requires a new bolt carrier group and last I looked there were no side charging compatible gas piston driven BCGs. Given your affinity for the Kalashnikov and the desire for a piston driven AR, why not invest in this:

http://www.faxonfirearms.com/content/images/thumbs/0000259_arak_21_upper_receiver.jpeg?

Its the Faxon ARAK upper. Operates exactly like an AKM but built like an AR15 and has a free floating barrel. The upper fits any standard lower. Its about $1200 all told though, which is pretty pricey.

I was going to use one that only required changing the gas key, so it would've worked.

Here's mine.

Oh yeah, the BSA red dot will be on a 'Z' mount before the end of the month that should co-witness with my sights. ;)
Erik do you have that registered as a SBR?

As far as I know S&W never made any ar15 pistols (but perhaps I am wrong), and just taking the stock off the buffer tube doesn't count.

I'm sorry if you already know this, but I thought i should point it out.

Sounds to me like he bought a stripped lower...which he can make into a pistol if he pleases

Very true, as long as it is a virgin lower never having been built into a rifle before.

I was unaware that S&W sold stripped lowers from the factory, but it is very possible they do.

CmdrSlandr ..... So Far so good on the NCStar! I really like it

I think the illumination is a little too bright sometimes, and actually picked one up recently at a gun show like mine and looked through it and it was not as bright.

I mentioned it to the seller that mine was brighter and He said send it back to NCstar if not happy for any reason, they warranty there products and make it right.

Im not sure it is a true problem tho? I figured being on display the one I picked up had batteries that were getting weak?

From There Website:

Binoculars, monoculars, and red dot sights) are covered by our Limited Lifetime Warranty.

If it was purchased as a new receiver (new, complete receivers are not rifles, but rather "firearm" as described by law) and registered at purchase as "receiver/other" (which is why you are required to be at least 21 to purchase), it can be built into a pistol. Building with a stock that makes it useable from the shoulder with a pistol upper makes it an SBR. I'd ditch the stock it may have had on it, but it is perfectly legal, as the upper it is built with in concert with the lower designates a rifle (16" bbl minimum, with an overall minimum length of 26", and be designed to fire from the shoulder), or a pistol accordingly with its definition in mind. As stated, best to not have a lonely stock just laying around.

Since the buffer tube is not a stock, and the ATF has indeed made it clear that it is necessary for the function of an AR15-style firearm, there is nothing unlawful nor defined as such regarding WHAT buffer tube is employed. Having the correct number of "stocks" on rifles in your ownership as defined by the ATF does not constitute the mythical "constructive intent" we hear of. AR15.com has tons of info and ATF correspondence on the matter.

If those guidelines are followed, then yes, it does indeed "count"

Yep, I was sure to get good pics of it stripped as delivered from Bud's. $136 felt high for a lower, was over their lay-away level at the time. Now, aside from 'blemished' Aero Precisions, that's a great price. Funny how that works. ;)

Current pic with new optics:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8683718224_4b1893a9d8.jpg

I have a better forward mount coming, the one that was under the BSA el cheapo red dot has the EOTech sitting too high and is also too wide to allow the EOTech to mount.

I have an ATF letter in the range bag (Wilson racket bag) that clarifies all of the ATF decisions behind everything on the build, from the lower never having had a Rifle upper on it to why the cane tip on the end of the carbine buffer tube is good to go. In fact, with the 18.25" barrel (14.5" with an extra-long AK-style brake welded to it) I could legally put a vertical grip on it. I won't, but I could. ;)

yeah josie, some folks think the the SF stocks are a waste of money. Grannie Hawkins would say they don't know doodly squat. They can be expensive to own if you get carried away. Mostly shoot in semi mode since our range doesn't allow auto fire. Anyway, it works great either way so no regrets. I do wish I'd gotten the single dot EOtec though.

I removed my standard "F" marked sight from my DD upper today and installed a PRI gas block and Diamondhead flip up sight. Installation was quite easy, it all lined up nicely. Removal of the original sight OTOH was hugely difficult. The pins would not budge, especially the front one. I had to grind on it, heat cycle it and just BFH it. Finally success.

Why a railed gas block with folding sight as opposed to a gas block w/o rails but an integral folding sight?

I thought about that route and frankly was leaning that way, but when I started looking at the BUIS the selection for rail mount is so large and I really like the Diamond Head, I went that route. With a folding sight (they are very nice) the selection is limited.

An ATI-HDA-16, i consider it the Buick Stage 3 of the AR-15 world. Fairly unknown, but still a serious contender. It was assembled by Head Down in GA, now that ATI owns them.
