A new-ish Chevy Suburban with a faded Nader bumpersticker.

Don't these people know that their vehicle was designed to crush poor folks driving cheaper Japanese econoboxes? (The fact that it would serve equally well to crush me in my more expensive German roadster seems to have slipped right past Ralphie & crew... ;) )

Bizarre?

Hardly.

People want stuff to apply to everybody but them. Why?

They're special.

We have the terms "Limousine Liberal", and "Mastercard Marxist" for the left-wing folks who don't practice what they preach. What would be an appropriate term for a Greenie who drives an SUV?

Interesting only for it's rarity, Tam misspelled a word.

:uhoh:

(Ironic enough not to edit.)

No...thank gawd that you didn't point out the missplaced modifier in my observation.

Thumper: Actually, you committed the old "dangling modifier" error. There's no noun in your observation that "Interesting only for its rarity" can logically modify. This slip might also fall under the category of "implied antecedent" error as well, since "its" has no logical antecedent.

How about "Interesting only for the rarity, Tamara's misspelling of a word was truly startling"?

And BTW, you used "it's" as a possessive pronoun. Another no-no. "It's" = "It is."

As for Tamara's post, I may have to put a Carter-Mondale sticker on my big, old, ugly pickup truck just for kicks.

My favorite was a red Camry with these two bumper stickers:

"Visualize World Peace"
"Clinton/Gore"

This was during a certain 'Peacekeeping operation' where we had the shameful duty of taking sides in an ethnic war in southern Europe.

I saw some little four-banger on campus here, driven by a well-fed looking fellow. Bumper stickers said something about "I walk in tune with Mother Earth".

I pointed out to my friend Dave, whom I was walking to class with, that HE DRIVES to class, whereas we WALK, not burning any fossil fuels at all. Thus, WE are the ones who are, in fact, in tune with the earth, whereas that plump chump was just a poser.

Heh.

A buddy of mine drives a 2 Ton 4WD Mitsubishi Fuso flatbed truck.

Another friend of mine has a vinyl sign cutter. We're going to make a sign for the first friend's "headache" rack that says,

One Less S.U.V.

Guyon,

"It's" wasn't a contraction of "it is" in that case. "It" referred to the circumstance of Tamara misspelling a word. The "it" was meant to be possesive. (Try replacing "it's with "it is" in the sentence and you'll see what I mean.)

Therefore, "it's (the circumstance's)" rarity would be correct.

"Tamara misspelled a word" was declarative and the "it" was meant to refer to the circumstance. Ambiguous in that case so you're right about the dangling modifier.

My bad. <----[(Not gramatically correct.)<----Not a complete sentence.]

Its (no apostrophe) is possesive.

Sorry Thumper. I've been teaching English for seven years. As jmbg29 points out, "it's" can only be a contraction.

BTW, I'm just funning with you here--mainly because you called Tamara on a point of spelling while committing a punctuation/grammar error. At least you caught it yourself though.

I make plenty of grammatical mistakes on here when I'm thinking and typing quickly (or drinking heavily :D ). Some I catch and change in an edit. Some I just shrug off. After all, THR is a bulletin board--not a refereed journal.
