Thumper: Actually, you committed the old "dangling modifier" error. There's no noun in your observation that "Interesting only for its rarity" can logically modify. This slip might also fall under the category of "implied antecedent" error as well, since "its" has no logical antecedent.

How about "Interesting only for the rarity, Tamara's misspelling of a word was truly startling"?

And BTW, you used "it's" as a possessive pronoun. Another no-no. "It's" = "It is."

I pointed out to my friend Dave, whom I was walking to class with, that HE DRIVES to class, whereas we WALK, not burning any fossil fuels at all. Thus, WE are the ones who are, in fact, in tune with the earth, whereas that plump chump was just a poser.

"It's" wasn't a contraction of "it is" in that case. "It" referred to the circumstance of Tamara misspelling a word. The "it" was meant to be possesive. (Try replacing "it's with "it is" in the sentence and you'll see what I mean.)

Therefore, "it's (the circumstance's)" rarity would be correct.

"Tamara misspelled a word" was declarative and the "it" was meant to refer to the circumstance. Ambiguous in that case so you're right about the dangling modifier.

Sorry Thumper. I've been teaching English for seven years. As jmbg29 points out, "it's" can only be a contraction.

BTW, I'm just funning with you here--mainly because you called Tamara on a point of spelling while committing a punctuation/grammar error. At least you caught it yourself though.

I make plenty of grammatical mistakes on here when I'm thinking and typing quickly (or drinking heavily :D ). Some I catch and change in an edit. Some I just shrug off. After all, THR is a bulletin board--not a refereed journal.
