Child Shot Inside Gun Store
Victim Reportedly Hit In Leg
UPDATED: 6:05 PM EST March 8, 2004
COSHOCTON, Ohio -- A 2 1/2-year-old child was airlifted to The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus after reportedly being shot in the leg Monday afternoon.
NewsChannel 4 reported that the shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. at Woodbury Outfitters, a gun store.
Coshocton County sheriff's deputies said an employee was showing a man how to load a gun. The employee thought the chamber was clear, but it wasn't, deputies said. The gun fired, and a bullet ricocheted off the floor and struck the man's son in the leg, deputies said.
The child's condition is not known.

First of all who loads weapons in a gunshop?
The guy needs to be fired and possibly brought up on charges.
I've been going to gunshops for at least 20 years and the only loaded guns were on the employee's hip or concealed carry by a customer.
Many shops have signs that any weapons carried into the store must be unloaded and have the action held open.

This is unbelievable!
What did Tamara say in another thread recently?
"God save me from my allies"
SNAP CAPS FOR CHRIST SAKES!!!!
Hope the child is ok. Hope the employee rethinks his career choice.
edit: scratch that; he doesn't get the choice. He damn well better get fired.

Fortunate it was a richochet and not a direct hit .. bad enough tho and ... utterly inexcusable. In a gun shop too .... incredible.
''Thought it was clear'' ... oh how often do we hear that. ? .. geez.
''A gun is ALWAYS loaded'' ... always! The guy needs to be fired and possibly brought up on charges. jsalcedo - could we just substitute the ''fired'' for ''SHOT'' instead!!! Make sure he knows what it feels like! :p

Oops.. I meant firing squad..
Outfitter type stores often do not have knowedgeable people behind the counter.

I agree, TERMINATE the employee for
unsafe gun practices. But, I think it was an
accident; so therefore criminal charges of
any nature wouldn't be warranted.
Apparently, the employee was a complete
idiot; and should have known better! In
my favorite shop, you are allowed hands
on inspection of any weapon for sale; but
they will not under any circumstances place
ammunition for that weapon in your grasp;
unless of course, you are purchasing both.
FWIW, I certainly hope the best for the little
fellow that was injured; as well as those
involved.
Best Wishes,

Oh, you sure can be charged with criminal charges. People get charged everyday for crimes involving either negligence or recklessness. Recklessness is worse than negligence.

God save us from the idiots of this world.
Saturday I was at my local gun shop BS'ing. One guy was holding this little tip-up barrel automatic (don't recall the make). I saw him empty it, but that's not the point. He was holding it in his hand and he's one of these people who can't carry on a conversation without gesturing wildly with both hands. I had to ask him twice not to point that thing at me. The guy behind the counter looked pretty disgusted but he didn't want to lose a sale so he didn't say anything. Made me nervous as !@#$ until I turned around and left.
Anyway, I hope the kid's okay and this idiot gets slapped in jail for a while.

Wel he didn't break EVERY rule
Rule 1:
All Guns are always loaded.
-oops
Rule2:
Never let the Muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy.
Well at least he didn't aim it at anyone
Rule 3:
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
-oops (unless that wall was the target)
Rule 4:
Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
or what it might bounce off of

Its total morons like that who end up giving us all bad name. What he was thinking loading a weapon in a situation like that is beyond me. one criminal charge that could be brought up is the discharge of a firearm within citi limits, there is also the chance of a variation of reckless endangerment. Either way, I think he should be fired and if possible slapped silly repeatedly.

The sad part part about it is that moron probably just made two gun haters.Probably a whole lot more considering how many read the article (or heard of it).
We fight for every possible "atta boy"... and it takes but on"aw (crap)" to erase the effort.
Well, the product of numbers (population) almost guarantees that there'll be someone doing something dumb - with anything (gun, car, hammer, chain saw, chewing gum, etc.).
Hope the boy is well soon, and the family can look past this one stupid ND to see the thousands of safe gun handlings that didn't hurt anyone.

Everybody knows the Four Rules are worthless. They are only for ninnies like El Tejon who pratter on and on about them.

This is the reason why I check the chamber even after the employee checks it.

I wonder? It seems a semi-auto was used. IF the father only had revolver knowledge, the cluck might have been instructing the father on proper loading of a mag and insertion and letting the slide strip a round and go forward into battery. Dummy rounds could have been used. Dummy rounds should have been used. The biggest rule of life was ignored; NEVER ASSUME!

I've never seen a gunshop where they will show you how to load a gun, this is just ridiculous. Did this gunshop clown really want to make the sale that badly???

What the employee said to the previous customer...
"Look, while the barrel says 9mm Luger, you could also fit these .380 Autos into it in a fix, in case of emergency! That's why you should buy this gun! BANG, dang, gotta fix that window again"

There is a gunshop near me that will go unnamed. They have very good gunsmiths there and I have never seen anyone there violate the Four Rules or anything like that. BUT, if you look up at the ceiling. . .:what: :what: :what: Granted, they have been there for decades, but still . . .

I had a gun pointed at me in a gunshop the other day.
I had looked at a pistol and the owner indicated to me that I should hand it to the other guy behind the counter to return to the display case, which he did, pointing it at my belly in the process. It gave me the squirms even though I'd looked at the empty action not two seconds before...
question for the forum - is there any respectful way for a (reasonably) young old man to bring that to the attention of two people who should very well know better who are both his father's age? I couldn't think of anything, so I just left.

A pistol in a display case pretty much has to be pointing at someone. Either at the clerk or at the customer, and putting it away means it's barrel is going to sweep somebody.

This story reminds me of my last range visit. As I'm leaving, I notice a guy showing one of his friends the in's and out's of using a pistol. He's showing him how to opperate it (unloaded) but at the same time he's not apparently telling him anything about the four rules as he's sweeping me and the only other person at the range with the barrel the whole time. As I'm walking past him he the barrel directly pointed at me when I stop and shoot him a somewhat dirty look (the other range customer was now shooting so I didn't dare take off my muffs to tell him otherwise). He got the idea and quickly pointed the barrel in a safe direction.

You're right that there are situations where it's unavoidable. This wasn't one of them.

Child shot at gun shop
COSHOCTON, Ohio — A .38-caliber handgun being shown to a customer at a sporting-goods store discharged yesterday, wounding a 2-year-old bystander, police said.
Officials with the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office said the bullet struck the floor at Woodbury Outfitters on Rt. 541, then ricocheted into the leg of the boy, who was in the store with his father.
"The second it happened, we dialed 911," said Joe Miller, the store’s owner. "They responded very quickly, thank God."
Ryan Gildow was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Columbus. He was listed in fair condition last night.
Authorities said the incident remained under investigation, but they said it appeared to be an accident.
Miller said he did not know why the gun was loaded because store policy prohibits loaded weapons on the premises.
"It shouldn’t ever have happened," Sheriff Tim Rogers said.
