Options to keep a SBS when moving temporarily to SBS-unfriendly area?

Hello,

I have been considering making a short-barreled shotgun on Form 1. Can anyone advise me as to what my options are should I move temporarily (for 4 years for school) to an SBS-unfriendly area? Could I separate the barrel from the registered receiver (ATF website says I can sell or give away a registered receiver without tax stamps and registration and such if the short barrel is no longer with the firearm- it is "no longer in the purview of the NFA"), and give the receiver to, say, my dad for safekeeping, and take the short barrel with me for re-assembly when I return?

Since it "left the purview of the NFA" would I technically have to re-register it with the ATF before I could re-assemble the SBS?

Thanks!

You have a couple options.

1. If you have a friend or parent in the state, you can put it in a locked container in their home and keep the key yourself (not let them have a key or access to it.)

2. Do it on a trust. That way you can name a friend or family member (who is eligible) can take possession of it while your away.

3. Put a long barrel on it. Take it with you to the state that doesn't allow it. You are allowed to make temporary changes to your SBS and treat it like a title 1 firearm even if it is registered as a SBS. You can keep a short barrel at a friend or family member's home as long as they don't own the same model receiver it fits. You do not have to re-register it to swap it back to a SBS if you never had it removed from the registry.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! That makes perfect sense- much easier than I was making it out to be. I'll just keep it locked up in a personal safe back in my current state of residence. Thanks again.
