Bought once fired brass and when sizing found about 8 of these things . Never run across this before and find no mention in any loading book about this case. It is sime rimmed and very much like a 38 super except for the sime rim . any one know what it is or was used for?

38 spl sr = ".38 Special semi-rimmed" but I'm not sure which gun it's made for.

I think it's for the Colt 38 AMU Government Model 1911.

Perhaps .38 AMU from back in the 1960's?
(AMU = Army Marksmanship Unit)
It was a .38 Special case without a rim to work in modified 1911 Match guns.
Never heard of any being head-stamped .38 SR though.
The ones I shot in 1968 were head-stamped .38 AMU.

The .38 Super has a semi-rim though too.
The case body is .384", and the semi-rim is .406".

Post some pics of the head stamp, rim, and a good side view.
Some measurements of the rim and body length & dia would help a lot too.

We are all just guessing right now.

I've got .38 AMU brass that both the box and the brass is marked SR for Semi-rimmed. Federal marked their boxes that way, and some of the boxes were for .38 WC ammunition, overstamped with the .38 SR.

I gave one of my boxes of .38 SR marked Federal brass to Federal for their archives, since they didn't have any.

Hope this helps.
