These are from a while ago, just got around to uploading them on Photobucket.

Taken with an iPhone 4, midday, overcast sky.

Any and all feedback on the photos or rifle appreciated!

1942 M91/30, set it up with a reproduction PU scope from Accumounts. I refinished the stock myself- it was stripped with denatured alcohol and 0000 steel wool, then 10 or 12 thin layers of shellac were applied, rubbed with steel wool between coats.

So this was a non-sniper 91/30, to wjich you added a reproduction scope mount and scope? I have been thinking of adding such a mount to my own 91/30, though I chose a less traditional finish for mine. I do love the Ruskie red on yours.

I reload 7.62x54r, but I haven't tried reloads in it yet. So far they've all gone to my M39. This particular rifle slugs at .314", so I'm currently waiting on an order of 250 .315" cast bullets from Penn Bullets.

I'm not entirely sure why the bore diameter is that large; the rifling is strong, lands are pretty sharp, and the grooves are moderately shiny. There isn't any undue wear at the muzzle and the "bullet test" shows it's quite good.

Yup! It was totally worth it, IMO.

Also you would have to change the bolt.


Had a local 'smith lengthen and bend the original handle. The angle is a little wide compared to the real thing; I've been thinking about bending it just a little more with a torch and piece of pipe.

I had a local gunsmith pin the mount onto the receiver.

Rifle was $89.95 from AIM, scope and mounting hardware were $300.

So did you use any stain on the wood? I am in the middle of doing the same thing and LOVE the color on the wood. That is exactly what I want mine to look like. You have done a great job. Let use know more on the re doing the stock

Nope, no stain directly on the wood. The first five or six coats of shellac were plain garnet, steel wool between coats after allowing them to thoroughly dry. The next few were garnet tinted with a very small amount of mahogany stain, same drying and steel wool rub process. After steel wooling the last coat, I covered the whole thing in a coat of paste wax, let it dry, then buffed it off with a microfiber cloth.
