WASHINGTON — Is your workplace getting shot up by a crazed gunman?

No problem — just grab a pair of scissors and fight back!

That’s some of the helpful advice in a new instructional video from the Department of Homeland Security that was posted on the agency’s Web site just a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut."

If they are advocating the use of weapons for the purpose of defense, I don't know why they won't recommend the most effective weapon readily available today. Maybe it's because scissors are impotent in repelling tyranny.

Government employees -- dumb enough to bring a pair of scissors to a gunfight.

OK, but you're going to have to register those scissors and get a CCW. Oh, and no extended blades.

Best buy your assault scissors with the grip thing that goes up before they're banned...

Running is the best option. Hunkering down in rooms makes it easier for the cops to organize the scene, but doesn't help survival chances much. My advice to people is to find--or MAKE--an exit and get as far away as possible. Break windows, smash doors, destroy whatever property you have to in order to get out. It's justified if your life is under threat. Still targets are dead targets.

Running is fine -- if you can run. Most killings occur in crowded rooms where there is no room to run.

Next up, a ban on assisted-opening scissors and scissors with thumbhole grips.

Workplace shootings have a trend of focusing on management who have or are perceived as having victimized or bullied the shooter, with collateral loss of life often being those who are in the line of travel to get at that person or those persons.

It's not a universal, but I bet even in a crowded room if your cubicle is in a corner off the line of travel from entrance/exits to the boss, you're probably less likely to catch a round . . .

Why not just shoot back?

Cosmoline

If that's an option, sure. Usually it isn't. These guys always seem to target the gun free areas or places where firearms are very unlikely. Not too many go to busy gun ranges to try their hand at mass shooting.

Wouldn't just be easier to least let people just take a Conceal Carry class, get a permit, and some kind of carry piece? I'm just a early 30's guy in college not the Honor Harrington of unarmed combat.

Depending on where you work, firearms may not be authorized. Federal property, for example, is a blanket GFZ. However, I like to think my pocket knife would be a much better weapon than a pair of scissors.

To the folks who say running is a good idea. I grew up near Detroit. The 3 people I personally knew who'd were murdered. 2 shot to death and one beaten with a tire iron all had one thing in common. They were all running from the bad people(s). If your close your better off jumping on them. How do you run from a man with a gun? The only thing to do is return fire. That home land security video is dangerous advice. Out run a bullet ha!

Remember your kindergarten years? What kind of scissors were in the Sandy Hook classroom? Yep, safety scissors. "You could put an eye out with those!", but only if you really worked at it.

+1

In Britain, the police advise women to use hair spray, a handful of coins, and keys between the fingers to ward off attackers, but self defense sprays amd brass knuckles are illegal, as is carrying anything with the intent to use it as a weapon!

DHS is acknowledging that you need a weapon to stop an attack, yet shies away from the ideal weapon; a handgun. Small enough to have on you, effective enough to actually make a difference.
Hell, they don't even advise carrying a knife, just improvise with scissors!

Unfortunately, many government facilities band firearms, cannot even bring any firearms onto the grounds and leave in your car. So....the choice of weapons is very limited.

federal government facilities do ban the law abiding from carrying or possessing firearms and they listen. It's the criminals who blazingly ignore that law. The royal oak michigan post office shooting for example. As I recall all the victims were following the law and were un armed and are still dead. The assailant walked passed the sign. Oh and fort hood.

Duct tape.
Duck tape would be more effective. You tape it the doorway and when the criminal ducks to enter the room, you stab him in the neck with the scissors.

Personally, i think Heinz 57 ketchup is a better option. Smear some on your torso and lie there playing dead. Be sure to hide the ketchup bottle or you may give away your charade.

Well, remember the 21 foot rule. Sometimes the man who brings a gun to a knife fight loses. Although a frightened office worker with a pair of scissors might not be an ideal knife fighter.

It doesn't apply if the pistol (or rifle) is already out.

"...brought to you by the 21st century version of the organization who brought you Bert the Turtle and the "Duck and Cover" nuclear defense drills..."

Because a flimsy wooden desk is good cover against a thermonuclear warhead. And scissors are heap good medicine against a gunman.
Why do we pay these folks again?
I think a troop of Girl Scouts could brainstorm something better.

That is just middle of the road, too. Some of the shears we sharpen are $1,000-$1,400 per pair. You can get the same performance for less money, but certain name brands fetch high prices, like many things in life.

I hope they don't ban scissors and shears, that would really hurt the family business. Oh wait.............if the guberment recommends scissors, then maybe it will help sales. Watch out for those shears with the "finger thing that swivels", they are far more deadly than fixed handle scissors. Also look out for those "salon style" convex edge scissors, they cut far too easily to be suitable for the average citizen or undocumented immigrant.

I think it's because they tried paper by outlawing mass shootings and went with scissors because we aren't cavemen and use rocks.

No need for any civilians to own guns. Just hunker down, call the government, and wait for them to catalogue the crime scene.

You may use scissors as a legal weapon, but only if you don't run with them.

Anyone caught running with scissors will get a visit from the ATF.

Duct tape? I may just see how it will look over the mouth of my attacker, as well as him being secured to a chair with it.

I'm hoping it takes at least 30 minutes for the authorities to arrive at the attacker crime scene, after my 911 call...wonder what his favorite color duct tape might be?

Better get an assortment of colors; red, white, and blue for starters.

I'm thinkin' Anthony Hopkins for the lead role, in the movie. "Oh, Clarice..."

Okay, yes, it looks stupid, we've all had a really good laugh about that video. Now, for some seriousness, and fairness.

The video doesn't say 'use scissors to overpower a gunman.'

They say 'Consider overpowering the gunman WITH WHATEVER MEANS ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU.' and they show a pair of scissors in an office desk as just an example.

Overpowering a murderous gunman with whatever means are available, if you are unable or unwilling to evacuate, isn't bad advice, especially if you have a firearm available to you.

I heard on the radio that the president's security detail had suffered multiple scissor injuries with the new pointy scissors and was going to be issued the safer rounded type. The injuries occurred when agents were running with their scissors (mom said that was a no no) to arrest a man who was eating an illegal chicken wing along the parade route.

I'm just glad the Corps didn't send me to Vietnam with scissors.
