Is it necessary to use gas checks? Is there any real benefit in using them in the M1 Carbine?

I shoot lots and lots of cast bullets, but not in my M1 Carbines. I know some people do, but I won't, since the gas port would probably become fouled after a period of time and have to be cleaned out. That would require breaking the stakes on the gas piston, and I see no need to incur that problem.

Berry's Bullets makes a plated bullet for the carbine that is good for up to about 1950 fps. That may be an alternative for you to look at.

Hope this helps.

Have shot my hard cast, unchecked, lead bullets in my M1 Carbine for years without problems. Use the right alloy and you should be fine. The benefit is you can reload this cartridge for about the price of rimfire ammo.
