Koucky, after being informed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade that the gun would have a high-capacity magazine initially wanted the gun to be a double-feed magazine.

That improves capacity since the magazine can be a double-column all the way to the top instead of channelling down to a single column at the top. It also makes the magazines easier to load.

The first prototype was built that way, and the second prototype started out as a double-feed design but was eventually converted to a single-feed design.

Some subguns use this feature, but, to my knowledge, the Russian 446 is the only successful design in a conventional pistol that uses double-feed magazines.
