... i need an AR-15. Forty years ago I would not have made that statement. Since then, I can no longer tolerate the recoil of any larger centerfire rifle that has as much power. Those of us on the otherside of 60 have very different physical limitations than younger people. The current discussions don't seem to address the needs of an ageing population. Just wait long enough and you too will need an AR.:)

This is a tough time to come to that realization if you don't already have one. However, I have certainly noticed that the platform is good for newer shooters and the recoil sensitive.

Do you already own one, or are you just coming into the market?

I currently own a Bushmaster carbine in .556 and an Arsenel SLR 106 FR in the same caliber, so Im OK. My point was to address those that are saying you don't "need" something when that item fills a need for older people with the limitations age can bring.

It is not only age either.

I had a shooting buddy who severely injured his hand. The doctors were able to save his fingers, although they only had about 45% of their original strength. His hand couldn't take the recoil any more and he had to switch to 223 from 308.

You can get similar performance and recoil negating from a Ruger 77 with a padded butt-stock. I have one with a Boyds thumbhole and a timney trigger, and its a powder puff in .223.
If your goin after p-dogs I recommend the Rem 700, it weighs more but its bull barrel works better on repeated shots.

At 53 & disabled, I have have found that Simi-autos are much more easygoing on my shoulder. I own a couple of ARs & have to use Scopes nowadays. Fighting off the criminals is getting expensive especially if you are on a fixed income!
