THIS is what happens when guns are removed from society....

In the time before guns, mobs and gangs ruled. If you wanted to travel, you traveled in caravans rather than alone. In a world where there are no guns, the biggest and strongest take over. THIS is the future Mayor Bloomberg would prefer for all of us:

Police are unable to stop it, citizens are unable to protect themselves.

No. This is just what happens.

When this same exact "flash mob" thing happened in my home town not long ago 3 teens were shot right by our mayor and the armed guard detail standing with him. Guns were not "removed from my city ("society")" when this happened here. In fact, guns wre present in the hands of good guys while this happened.

Incidentally, it hasn't happened since. Was there a gun ban in the wake of it? No. Are there more guns in the wake of it? Kind of, in that the LEO stepped up patrols in the areas.

There was also a city-wide curfew enacted for teens.

Keep guns. Remove guns. This stuff happens.

Gee...will they start clamouring to ban flash mobs now?

They can use the same name for the Anti Flash Mob Advocacy group too: The Brady Bunch.

Gossamer-
You are right in saying that this stuff "just happens" and will happen in any society. There is a big difference in these instances though and I think its what the OP is trying to say. The instance you provided there was a gun involved and a number of members shot, hence the act of the mob was stopped and the mobbers realized that there could be some REAL HARD consequences for these actions. Look at the continuing instance in NY, those mobs have not been confronted with force and they will continue to benefit from their actions because the innocents involved have not produced any force for them to think their actions may result in anything less than what they desire. Do you really think criminals stop because some authority figure tells them to stop? Criminals stop when they realize they are outmanned, outpowered, and cannot overcome the force being used against them.

In the case of these "flash mobs" doing harm in my city, the evidence says yes, they do.

Criminals stop when they realize they are outmanned, outpowered, and cannot overcome the force being used against them.

And that force isn't always a gun. Sometimes it's surveillance, threat of prosecution, parents, loss of privileges.

Force, like crime, is a spectrum.

I approve of a force spectrum for an approaching mob. Voice, boot, sauerkraut masher and then old painless.

It worked because 3 people got shot. The force used opened their eyes and made them see that their actions had dire consequences. Without that eye opening experience I dare say that they would have continued to do what they were doing. It was completely AFTER this eye opening experience that the curfews were passed and enforced. Force was used so the voice of the authority was heard and followed. Dont get me wrong, I am in no way saying guns should always be used or even enter most encounters, but in this instance the gun was the motivating factor for the swift end of the nonsense. I assume you are talking about the instances on the Plaza. It was only after this instance happened that police, parents, and the city were brought in to keep it from happening again.

On the Plaza, the gun-as-force those mobs saw was in the hands of the bad guys. I dont' think guns in the hands of irresponsible criminals is what the OP had in mind though.

Suffice it to say these mobs are going exist regardless of the presence or absence of guns in the hands of law abiding citizens. And guns are not the only force that can be utilized to curtail them.

Ah very true, I guess I was cornfused :p. I was under the impression the shots came from the mayor's guard not from BGs. I stand corrected. You are right, mobs will form with or without guns. Curbing guns does not curb violence or stupidity, enforcement of laws already in existance will. Look at England they are starting to think about banning sharp knives since their gun ban hasn't stopped any of their violent tendancies. In a society without guns though brute force and mob mentality do rule against the common citizen.

No, they will only ban Hi Cap flashmobs.

Another good reason we need the option of an AR-15.

They are not "looking at banning sharp knives"... they already have. And clubs. And fake wooden swords. When I say "banned", I don't mean someone in the kitchen with a butcher knife. I mean that they can't carry virtually any knife (there are knives small enough to be legal) in public. And yes, they have had huge problems with flash mobs... no one can legally defend themselves with anything but fists.

Flash mobs are very dangerous and unpredictable. I do not spend much time in Philadelphia anymore because of them.

Big cans of bear pepper spray, and several people who know how to use them. Problem is, innocent customers will be hit.

Glad I live away from metro areas now. Will never go back. Never.

The deterioration of AMerica !! Let these thugs try their stunt in Texas, and someone is likely to get shot in the head with brains all over the place.

As I've argued in a couple other threads, infringement of the 1st Amendment seems like a more effective remedy to a variety of social ills than infringing the 2nd Amendment.

As the economy declines, expect more riots of this nature.

Why the media solf sells these riots as flash mobs is really a disservice to the public. A true flash mob engages in harmless fun activity. Riots of this nature are organized events which benefit those engaged in criminal activity. Back in the sixties, the folks from ingleside would swoop down on the Stonestown Shopping Center, overwhelm the staff and security and loot it. They'd then return home with their loot.
