I need a little help here.. I'm trying to restore my dad's first shotgun and give it back to him.. I'm sure he will hand it on down to my son, but I just wanted to tell him I loved him in a special way.. Anyhow, I'm not looking to make this piece show room condition, I just want it to be in safe and operable.. Here are the three main issues...

1) safety isn't working correctly...

2) trigger guard is broken

3) barrel and has some surface rust

Can anyone help me with where to find a trigger guard and tell me what process I need to use to remove the rust from the outside of the barrel. I am gonna look into the safety issue and see what I can do...

Remove rust with 0000 grade Super-Fine steel wool & oil.

Numeric gun parts might have a trigger guard & butt plate.

You could try typing the brand, model number, and parts into a Google search. I have found Marlin parts I never thought I would that way. Numerich and several others have some limited stuff available, check Marlin as well because they just might have what you need. That is actually a fairly common shotty and I bet you will find the stuff needed. I use 0000 steel wool and PB Blaster to remove rust off my firearms. Then I coat it with several layers of good gun wax (I like Flitz brand wax) with enough time between coats to dry for good protection.

Marlin also made that same bolt action 410 for Sears under the J. C. Higgins name back in the early 1960's. Searching gunbroker or auction arms for part guns under other names may help you find a donor firearm.


Edit to add: Also the safety is moved to "safe" automatically when the bolt is opened. If that is what it's doing now that's correct.
Oh and by the way. It was my first shotgun too!!! :)
