My question is, why did the NRA have to say anything?
I mean now, yes, they have to now that the anti's are going after guns and trying to make new laws.
I've been thinking about this a lot, and finally got a few thoughts formed on my concern.
The NRA is doing everything they can to diffuse the current situation, and obviously has to at this point in the game.
But why did the NRA have to say anything at all about the shooting?
It wasn't an NRA member that was responsible, in fact, I've never heard of any of these mass murders being caused by an NRA member.
Every time an auto accident happens, you don't hear ford, GM, or for that matter triple A making a statement.
It is what it is, and it was sad, and horrific.
I'm more afraid when it's all said and done, and we look back at whatever comes of it, that the NRA stepping up to make ANY statement proves to be more detrimental than just keeping quiet.
Again, we didn't do it, and (I believe) we/they had no business stepping up to take any position on any of it.
Instead of it being people against bad guys shooting people, it looks more to me like people against the NRA now.
I may be way off here, but often times in life, we create exactly that which we defend against.

People expected the National Rifle Association to make a statement. I feel sure they considered not making any statement. They knew that they would be criticized regardless of what they said.

As I recall, the NRA was silent for a few days after the Sandy Hook shooting.
They did not rush into the public eye and start the discussion on more gun control, that was the anti's who refused to let a crisis go to waste. It took the NRA a few days after that even to make any official statement. By the time the NRA made any statement, Slimestein et al had ready started beating the AWB drum.

I disagree with some of the position of the NRA, and although I filled out a membership for one year, I probably won't renew. However, we cannot deny that the NRA-ILA is the biggest lobby on our behalf, and I will continue donating to them.
We need to talk about the shooting because that's what on the table: Sandy Hook. That's the big hooplah that's got the grabbers in a frenzy. It was a tragedy, yes, but we need to look at the root cause instead of just "doing something."

I was miffed initially that the NRA laid low for a week after Sandy Hook. In fact, I called them "cowards" on my FaceBook page for doing so.
In hindsight, they did the right thing IMO. That's why they are the NRA and I'm a John Q. Public....

Somebody had to say something in opposition to the cry for gun-control --it dang sure hasn't been the Republicans. Honestly, they're the only ones with any kind of coherent, focused message on the topic in defense of gun rights. The NRA is a more relevant "political party" than any other offering on the conservative side, for the time being; at least for people like me keenly focused on this issue for now.

The NRA doesn't say half of what it should say and they need someone else saying whatever they do say.

My thoughts exactly. A great way to put it.
I really want to see LaPierre replaced.

Must be those stinking video games. :D Actually, they did have some good ideas that others are now chiming onto. Even Biden has said the "assault weapon" ban would have had no effect on both Aurora and Newtown CT.
They need to take a very hard look at mental health issues. If you think the anti gun folks fighting the NRA, wait until the mental health people get involved as well other more traditional liberal groups representing that issue.

They were going to have to address it at some point. I thought the "cooling down" period they used was genius. Anything they would've said right after the shooting would've been ridiculed (think about - ANYTHING). They even took flak for that (almost as though many blamed the organization for the shooting). I can't imagine how much hatred would be coming their way if they hadn't said anything at all.
