Can any of my fellow Michiganders help direct me to the laws concerning open carry in our great State? The SOM website won't let me open any of the pages concerning this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michigan is a traditional open carry state. There is no law that prevents it (unless you are in Grand Rapids, which has a city ordinance against it (which could/should be challenged as we have pre-emption laws)). You can open carry legally anywhere that is not a gun free zone. You cannot open carry in a vehicle without a CPL. If you have a CPL, you may open carry in gun free zones.

Pistol free zones include school property, day care centers, child placing agencies, sports arenas, stadiums, bars, places of worship, entertainment facilities seating more than 2500 people, hospitals, dorms, and college classrooms.

Taken right off the back of my CPL.

Beware, there are two sets of Pistol Free Zones, one for Concealed Pistol Licensees and one for Open Carriers (with no CPL.) There is some overlap between the two but they are different in that a person with a CPL can open carry in a CPL-listed PFZ but an OCer without a CPL cannot OC or CC in any PFZ.

Additionally, carrying in a car (OC or CC) is considered concealed and unless you have a CPL, you must unload and put away your gun before getting in you vehicle.

Istill keep forgetting this one. OP, if you're eligible for a CPL get one. Even if you only plan on carrying openly. Our open carry laws are a little hazy, and a CPL just makes life easier.

As stated in this Michigan State Police Legal Update (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/msp/MSP_Legal_Update_No._86_2_336854_7.pdf), there are no laws allowing open carry. It is legal because there are no laws prohibiting it.

The above link is good reading, but obviously isn't the last word on the legal front for open carry laws. For example, they don't touch on the open carry without a CPL on a premesis licensed by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

I always get conflicting info on this. Some say OC is only prohibited without a CPL in liquor control board establishments where liquor is sold for on-site consumption, aka a bar, pub, tavern, etc. but a place that sells liquor such as a liquor store, gas station, Wal-Mart, etc. where you would not consume on site is okay to OC.

Neither the MSP web page nor the codified law are really clear.

But yeah, if you can, get your CPL.

750.234d Possession of firearm on certain premises prohibited; applicability; violation as misdemeanor; penalty.

Sec. 234d. (1) Except as provided in subsection (2), a person shall not possess a firearm on the premises of any of the following:
(a) A depository financial institution or a subsidiary or affiliate of a depository financial institution.
(b) A church or other house of religious worship.
(c) A court.
(d) A theatre.
(e) A sports arena.
(f) A day care center.
(g) A hospital.
(h) An establishment licensed under the Michigan liquor control act, Act No. 8 of the Public Acts of the
Extra Session of 1933, being sections 436.1 to 436.58 of the Michigan Compiled Laws.
(2) This section does not apply to any of the following:
(a) A person who owns, or is employed by or contracted by, an entity described in subsection (1) if the
possession of that firearm is to provide security services for that entity.
(b) A peace officer.
(c) A person licensed by this state or another state to carry a concealed weapon.
(d) A person who possesses a firearm on the premises of an entity described in subsection (1) if that
possession is with the permission of the owner or an agent of the owner of that entity.
(3) A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more
than 90 days or a fine of not more than $100.00, or both.

Gotta love lawmakers and their lack of logic or common sense. Needing a Concealed Pistol License to Open Carry in places you can't carry concealed. Only in government does that make sense.
