I was thinking of getting a Rem 700 VLS or VS in .308. My favorite gun store is out of them in .308 but has one of the VLS in 7MM-08. They are asking $550 for it. How dose the 7-08 compare to the .308 in this format?

If you don't handload, hold out for the .308 -- many more factory ammo options in .308. If you're a handloader, the 7-08 would be great -- can't imagine you would notice any practical difference, except less recoil with the 7-08 -- doubt you would notice that either in the rifle you mentioned. I happen to like both and would have trouble choosing between the two.

Pick up the 7mm-08.
If you're shooting for real accuracy (why else would you get a VLS?), you probably won't be buying surplus or El Cheapo ammo anyway.
It will also force you into the wonderful world of reloading, to try to squeeze some extra accuracy out of your rig.
The 7mm-08 is available in a wide variety of premium factory loadings if you need them, as its popularity has increased pretty dramatically over the past 15 years.
