How timely, I just over filled my truck reservoir yesterday and pulled an El Pato can's worth back out to mix some up at the shop.

Stinky but it works great!

The recipe for the "homade penetrating oil" is 1 part transmission fluid, 1 part Acetone.
I use it all the time. works great! A friend who works on 4 wheelers all the time taught this to me and it is also what was mentioned in the thread cited.

How dang much penetrating oil do you guys use on guns anyway.

I do quite a bit of gun work myself.

And I am still working on the same 4 oz can of Marvil Mystery Oil I bought years ago.

I use it all the time because I am a millwright, not on firearms. Never had the occasion to need penetrating oil on a firearm.

I think about all I've used it on in firearms is valuable and finicky sight components and maybe a couple-three side covers/screws, then there's the surplus stuff and... - nope, the more I think about it, I use penetrants a lot on antique, abused and ignored firearms, especially from estate sales.

Go bulk home-brew!

Now I'm thinking about bulk penetrant in my smaller ultrasonic - and heated at that... what could go wrong?:D

Years ago working on a farm, we had occasion to use penetrating oil on rusted bolts on implements that sat out in the weather all year, and Marvel Mystery Oil was our marvelous mystery oil of choice (also used as a top cylinder lube for tractors & farm trucks). Having moved on, sadly, I have almost never needed a penetrating oil on a gun. I like to keep it around for boat/car/surprise use, so I keep Kroil around. Kano had a sale a bunch of years ago, & I bought three 8 oz. cans of Kroil for less than $10 delivered. Couple of years ago I realized I would die before using it all, so I gave 2 unopened cans to a couple of friends. I will die before any of us use it all...

You don't need penetrating oil on guns often, but when you do nothing else will do. Ever had a stuck choke tube? How about removing a screw plug from a scope mount hole that's had the plug in it for 40 years?

The first time I used Kroil was to remove a scope plug from an old Marlin 336. I tried everything to get it to budge, but the slot was so small you couldn't apply much torque. So I put a drop of Kroil on it and let it sit overnight. The next morning I tried to unscrew it and it spun out of the hole.

Yep PB Blaster has replaced all that I used to use/mix myself. I really like it with 000 steel wool to clean up surface rust on an old beater without doing major damage to whatever bluing that is left. A huge thumbs up for it.:cool:

I use a mix close to the Reds formula. It is a fantastic gun cleaner and probably the best penetrating oil I have ever used.

1 part Valvoline universal ATF (Lowest odor)
1 part odorless mineral spirits
last part is light weight oil (10 wt compressor oil)
and D-limoline or orange oil.
I would probably never have believed how good this stuff works but it is the best at cleaning fouling and carbon and un-burned powder from a gun. It also penetrates and dissolves rust and leaves a light oily film that will prevent future rust.
The d-limoline is a great cleaner and adds a nice sweet odor to the mix.
I literally bathe my guns in the stuff. It does not get along well with the black foam rubber. regular rubber like what is in recoil pads it does not bother.

Rislone and Marvel Mystery oil, for 50+ years, just think, all those years without getting all ‘gitty’ about the next miracle ‘OH!, LOOK WHAT I JUST DISCOVERED’. For the price it is not easy to beat automatic transmission fluid.
