In January, 1986 Dr. Frank Sommer of Tulsa, OK killed a burglar in his home. A local lawyer contacted the family of the burglar and they launched a civil suit against Dr. Sommer.
This lawsuit prompted OK senator Charles Ford to sponsor legislation that became the so called "make my day law". The wounded perp or family of the deceased perp may not file a civil lawsuit in righteous burglary/home invasion cases.
Burglary rates in OK declined drastically after the law was passed. Furthermore, those rates have stayed down.

i've been trying to track these home defense cases. It appears that 5-8 burglars/home invaders lose their their lives in OK each year.

It has been an unqualified success. Since the Make My Day Law came into force, burglary has declined by almost half in Oklahoma. In 1987, there were 58,333 cases; in 2000, just 31,661.
